Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Paco Cabanes won the "Campionat Nacional d'Escala i Corda" championships in the sport of Valencian pilota an incredible eight times in 15 years. By what name was he known when playing?

Answer: Genoves I

Genoves I made his debut at the 1974 championships and then won it in 1975, 1976, 1978, 1979, 1981, 1983, 1984 and 1989, being the dominant player in the sport for a 20 year period. This despite rule changes being brought in, forbidding him from playing "per alt" (on guard) and forcing him to play "per baix" (down) in order to give the opposition a chance. Between 1979 and 1983, organisers insisted he play with his brother Pepe, who was at best an average player, and he still won the crown. Genoves I retired in 1995 after winning the Trofeu Individual Bancaixa in which he beat Alvaro, a player 20 years his junior in the final.
2. Which Real football club dominated the domestic league in the late 1980s, winning the title in 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989 and also in 1990, when Welshman John Toshack was manager?

Answer: Real Madrid

Amazingly Real Madrid had so much talent at their disposal on the playing field, changing the manager had very little effect as they won their five back to back titles with three different managers.
3. With players such as Clifford Luyk, Wayne Brabender and Juan Antonio Corbalán, Real Madrid dominated the Liga Nacional de Baloncesto in the 1970s, in which sport?

Answer: Basketball

Dominated isn't too strong a word, when one looks at the record books, as Real Madrid won the league every year between 1968 and 1980, with the exception of 1978 when Joventut from the city of Badalona won. Not only was Clifford Luyk an exceptional player for Real Madrid, he was a great coach too, taking charge of the junior team between 1978 and 1981, during which time the juniors never lost a game and coaching the senior team between 1991 and 1994, when they won two national championships.
4. Jesus Puras won the Spanish Rally Championship four consecutive years between 1997 and 2000. Which make of car drove him on to victory?

Answer: Citroen

Puras first won the championship in 1990 and again in 1992, driving a Lancia Delta Integrale, but it was when he made the switch to Citroen that the magic really happened. He won in 1995, driving a Citroen ZX and it was this model that also brought him the first two of his four in a row, albeit in a modified kit car version.

The next two years, he drove a Citroen Xsara kit car and it was thia car, in the WRC version, that he won his last championship in 2002 before retirement.
5. Winners of the Division de Honor every year from 2006 to 2018, is an incredible feat, and one that was completed by Atlètic-Barceloneta in which water based sport?

Answer: Water Polo

Atlètic-Barceloneta are from a suburb of Barcelona and coach Chus Martin has been able to choose from a wealth of talent over the years, with players such as Felipe Perrone, Alberto Munarizz and Alejandro Bustos all playing for the team.
6. With Aitor Egurrola in goal and Gabriel Cairo scoring goals, Barca Lassa dominated the OK Liga between 2002 and 2010, in which sport?

Answer: Roller Hockey

To say that Aitor Egurrola is a good roller hockey goalkeeper would be something of an understatement as he won almost 70 cups and championships with Barca Lassa between 1998 and 2019, as well as two European championships with Spain. Gabriel Cairo is considered by many to have been one of the best to ever play the sport and won over 20 honours with Barca, as well as an Olympic gold medal in 1992, representing Argentina at the Barcelona games, where roller hockey was an exhibition sport.
7. Arquitectura were formed in 1931 and have won an impressive four Division de Honor titles in the 1980s when they beat Hernani twice and Santboiana twice. Which sport are we talking here?

Answer: Rugby Union

Although the glory years may be behind this team from the Superior Technical School of Architecture of Madrid, fans believe that the trophies will come their way again soon, so well run is the organisation at grass roots level, boasting 16 teams, including children's and youth teams as well as a successful ladies team.

They also manage to attract well known names to the club, such as South African coach Arno Hood and New Zealander Laurie O'Reilly under whom they won the Division de Honor in 1990 and 1995.
8. In which Olympic sport, featured on a 2011 50 pence coin in UK, did BM Granollers win ten Spanish league titles between 1959 and 1974?

Answer: Handball

BM Granollers were founded in 1944 and seem to ooze success with their women's and youth teams also having won Spanish championships. The team won the European Handball Federation Cup Winners' Cup in 1976, becoming the first Spanish side to win a European title and have gone on to win the EHF Cup in 1995 and 1996.
9. CV Almería won the Spanish volleyball superliga for six consecutive years between 2000 and 2005, but in which year did they achieve the "treble", combining the league title with the "Copa del Rey" and the Spanish Supercup?

Answer: 2002

The achievement of Granollers historic treble in 2002 was all the more impressive when you consider the fact that the club was only formed in 1986. Two of the clubs better known players were Carlos Carreño and Juanjo Salvador, both of whom represented Spain at the 2000 Olympics.
10. Which team won an incredible 20 Spanish field hockey league titles between 1983 and 2012?

Answer: Atletic Terrassa

Atletic Terrassa from the Catalonia region of Spain were founded in 1952, but started setting records in 1983 when they began their run of nine consecutive league titles. The following year, they won their first Copa del Rey trophy, and dominated that competition too, winning it for ten out of the next 13 years.

The other possible answers are all hockey teams, but ice hockey rather than field hockey.
