It started in 1998. The NSWRL started in 1908, then in 1995 it became the ARL. In 1997 there was 2 competitions, the ARL and Super League. In 1998 there was one competition again when the ARL and Super League merged to from the NRL.

Round 1 of the 1999 season, 6th March, had a double header Manly-Warringah v Newcastle and St George-Illawarra v Parramatta at the Olympic Stadium. The exact crowd was 104,583. The winners on the day were the Newcastle Knights and Parramatta Eels.
