Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which 1959 MVP began his season with a bang, by getting five hits on opening day, including a game-winning home run?

Answer: Nellie Fox

The other greats never won the MVP. The White Sox second baseman did this on April 10th. Fox would hit only one more home run in the season. Fox won the MVP over teammates Luis Aparicio and Early Wynn, who finished second and third in the voting.
2. Which of the following hit 40+ home runs in a season?

Answer: They all did

They all reached the 40 plateau only once in their career. Ted of the Red Sox hit 43 in 1949, Matt of the Giants equalled that in 1994, while Billy the Cub, smacked his 42 in 1970.
3. Which team never saw the 2003 playoffs?

Answer: Seattle Mariners

The others were all knocked out in the Divisional Series. Seattle, finishing the season 93-59, missed out by one spot to the Boston Red Sox.
4. Which of the following Red Sox pitchers who led the league in strikeouts, threw 300+ strikeouts in that season?

Answer: Pedro Martinez

Clemens led the league twice in 1991 and 1996, with the latter season showing his best of 257. Lonborg's stellar MVP year in 1967 saw him strikeout 246, and Nomo peaked at 220 in 2001. It was Pedro Martinez, who for the second time in his career reached the 300 plateau in 1999. Martinez struck out 313 American Leaguers.
5. Who was the first 300 game winner that won all his 300 games with the same team?

Answer: Walter Johnson

Young won 241 games with his Cleveland Spiders before being passed around the league four more times. Young retired with 511 victories. Koufax retired with 265 career wins. Although Carlton won 329 games, they were mostly split with the Cardinals and Phillies. From 1907-1927, Johnson won all his 417 games with the Senators of Washington. He was a Hall of Fame inductee in 1936.
6. Which of the following reached first base by any means, the most times in their career?

Answer: Pete Rose

Rose set a record for reaching base the most times with 5,929. Rose had 4,256 hits, 1,566 walks, and was hit by a pitch 107 times in his career. He played from 1963-1986, mostly with Cincinnati.
7. Which team in 1988 began their season by losing their first 21 games?

Answer: Baltimore Orioles

The other teams listed all won their divisions in 1988, and the Dodgers won the World Series. The Orioles finished out the season with the worst record in 1988, finishing just 54-107. Despite the bats of brothers Ripken and Eddie Murray, the Orioles leading pitcher, Jeff Ballard, won only eight games.
8. Which player stole the most bases in the 2003 season?

Answer: Juan Pierre

Pierre of the World Champion Marlins, stole 65 bases in the season, defeating American League leader Carl Crawford's 55 with the Devil Rays. 2003 would be the 16th consecutive season that did not see a century mark in base stealing. The Cardinals' Vince Coleman stole 107 in 1987.
9. Which of the following baseball brothers, did not total 500+ home runs between them?

Answer: Jose and Ozzie Canseco

Of the Aaron brothers, Hank hit 755 by himself. The three DiMaggio boys totaled 573, with Joe leading them by hitting 361, and Eddie Murray hit over 500 by himself. The Canseco brothers, saw Jose hit all their 462, and Ozzie not hit any.
10. Who was the first pitcher in history to win 30 games in a season, and later lose 20 games in a season?

Answer: Denny McLain

Only Dean had won 30 games in a season, but the others listed never lost 20 games. McLain had a stellar season in 1968, going 31-6. Only three seasons later he finished a dismal 10-22 with the Washington Senators. The following season in 1972 would be McLain's last.
