Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Atlanta Hawks began playing NBA basketball in Georgia in 1968 after moving from St Louis. To which arena did they move in 1999?

Answer: Philips Arena

The Hawks were relatively successful in St Louis, winning the NBA title in 1958, but struggled to repeat that success in Atlanta. They failed to reach the 3rd round of the play-offs during the remainder of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st. They moved into the brand new Philips Arena in 1999, having previously played in The Omni.
2. If you took a trip to the small town of Hampton in Henry County, Georgia, which sport would you most likely be going to watch?

Answer: Auto Racing

Hampton is home to the Atlanta Motor Speedway. Opened in 1960, the track has a spectator capacity of 125,000. NASCAR holds the AdvoCare 500 race there each year on the Labor Day weekend.
3. What nickname is given to the annual gridiron match-up between Georgia Tech and the University of Georgia?

Answer: Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and Georgia Bulldogs first met on the football field in 1893, and have played each other every single year since 1925. The game is traditionally the last of the regular season for both teams.
4. Which longtime manager led the Atlanta Braves to victory in the 1995 baseball World Series?

Answer: Bobby Cox

Cox first managed the Braves between 1978 and 1981 before being fired. After returning as general manager in 1986, he began a second spell as team manager in 1990. In a 21 season spell in charge, Cox led the Braves to the playoffs 15 times, and made it to the World Series on five occasions. Their only championship came in 1995, when they defeated the Cleveland Indians 4-2.
5. Hollis Stacy, from Savannah, Georgia, was a leading name in which sport during the 1970s and 80s?

Answer: Golf

Stacy was born in Savannah in 1954. Turning pro in 1974, she won her first major in 1977, winning the US Women's Open at Hazeltine. The following year, she successfully defended her title at Indianapolis. Her third, and final, US Open triumph came in 1984 at Salem, Massachusetts.
6. Atlanta has had the misfortune to see two NHL teams relocate to other cities. To which Canadian cities did these teams move?

Answer: Calgary & Winnipeg

The Atlanta Flames were an NHL outfit between 1972 and 1980. Falling attendances led to the franchise relocating to Calgary. Hockey returned to Atlanta in 1999 when an expansion team named the Thrashers began play at the Philips Arena. Once again financial problems led to relocation, with the team moving to Winnipeg in 2011, and becoming the second incarnation of the Jets.

The first Winnipeg Jets (formed 1972) became the Phoenix Coyotes in 1996.
7. Which boxer from Augusta, Georgia, won world titles at both welterweight and light heavyweight?

Answer: Vernon Forrest

Forrest was born in Augusta in 1971. In 2001, he won the IBF welterweight tile with a victory over Guyana's Raul Frank. He added the WBC version the following year with a win over Shane Mosley. He moved up to light middleweight after this and won the WBC title with a victory over Carlos Baldomir of Argentina.
8. The Atlanta Falcons made it to their first NFL Super Bowl in January, 1999, where they lost to which team?

Answer: Denver Broncos

The Falcons finished the 1998 regular season with a 14-2 record, the second best in the NFC behind the Minnesota Vikings. In the play-offs, they defeated the San Francisco 49ers and the Vikings to set up a meeting with head coach Dan Reeves' former team, the Denver Broncos.

The men from Colorado were the defending champions, and were never in trouble in the big game, beating the Falcons 34-19.
9. Ashley Harkleroad, from Rossville, Georgia, was a competitor in which sport?

Answer: Tennis

Harkleroad was born in Rossville in 1985. She turned pro in 2000 and achieved a then career high ranking of 39 in 2007. She is best known, however, for appearing nude in "Playboy" magazine in 2008!
10. The Masters golf tournament has been held annually at Augusta National, Georgia, since 1934. Which famous golfer was involved both with designing the course and founding the tournament?

Answer: Bobby Jones
