The Panathenaic Stadium was rebuilt in time for the opening ceremony of the 1896 games. Triple-jumper James Connolly (USA) won the first Olympic medal in more than 1,500 years here. Today you have to book a slot in order to use the facility of the running track. The time slot must be adhered to due to the local authorities worrying about wear and tear. This stadium is the only one in the world made entirely from marble bar the track and the field.

The National Stadium is the official name of what is commonly known as the Bird's Nest Stadium in Beijing. Home of the 2008 Olympic games, the Nest held 91,000 (later reduced to 80,000). The Chinese had not used it significantly after the Olympics but used it sparingly for events such as one-off football matches and concerts.
