New Zealand: Waikato, Wellington, Canterbury, Otago, and Auckland
Australia: Queensland and NSW
South Africa: Western Province (Stormers), Natal (Sharks), and Transvaal (Cats).

Pretoria/Northern Transvaal and the ACT Brumbies joined those 10 teams as founding members of ther Super 12s.

The provincial tournament has started in 1992 as the Supers Sixes (Canterbury, Auckland, Wellington, Queensland, NSW, and Fiji), and expanded to a Super 10 competiton after just one year, when Western Samoa replaced Fiji, and teams from South Africa were introduced. Prior to the launch of the Super Sixes in 1992, a provincial tournament between six teams had been held in 1986, 1987, 1989 and 1990.
