Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bill Young made the Brumbies number 1 jersey his own since his debut in 1998. Which Brumby actually hailed from the town of Young, not far from Canberra?

Answer: Jim Williams

Jim Williams was noted for his heroics in the Brumbies successful 2001 campaign, where he persisted to play week after week with a broken rib. Perhaps his time in the army was responsible for this tough man approach to the game.
2. Jeremy Paul caused a stir with his Maori father when he represented the Wallabies against the NZ Maori in 2001. In which New Zealand town was this unusually prolific try scorer born?

Answer: Hamilton

Jeremy Paul was one of two Brumbies on the 2004 squad to hail from New Zealand. The other is Tamaiti Horua who was born in Nelson.
3. The Brumbies have been known to search far and wide for talent, in no position is this more noticeable than at tight-head prop. Which of these Brumbies big men was actually born in Australia?

Answer: Nick Henderson

Although they all qualify to play for the Wallabies, Ben Darwin was born in Bath, England. Patricio Noriega who played for the Brumbies in their early years was Argentinian. Guy Shepherdson, surprisingly enough was born in Jakarta. Perhaps Indonesia should start to put a team together?
4. It was a subject of some controversy when at the beginning of the 2004 season , the Brumbies lock duo of Daniel Vickerman and Justin Harrison defected to the NSW Waratahs. Their replacements proved to be even better. Which of these Brumbies locks was the tallest?

Answer: Daniel Vickerman

When he first came to the Brumbies, Daniel Vickerman was the tallest man in the Super 12 at a towering 2.04m. Justin Harrison is a centremetre shorter than him at 2.03, while the try-scoring duo of Samo and Chisolm, were a 'mere' 1.97m.
5. Radike Samo, the winger turned lock, stunned the Super 12s in 2004 with his Fijian ball-running skills. Which other 2004 Brumbies player spurned a life amongst the coconut palms and sunny beaches of Fiji to play in the cold air of Canberra?

Answer: Jone Tawaki

Jone came to Australia via a methodist rugby scholarship to Kinross Wolaroi School in Orange. He played 10 games over 2 years for the NSW Waratahs, scoring within 5 minutes of his debut, and then came to the Brumbies in 2004.
6. Whenever he represented the Wallabies in Ireland, Owen Finegan was known for purchasing anywhere up to 300 tickets so that his extended Irish family could watch him. In his time in the Super 12, this bullocking back-rower has left many defenders in his wake, provoking celebration and bad puns amongst fans. Which great Irish author wrote Finnegan's Wake?

Answer: James Joyce

The book is not much of a read, in fact it makes about as much sense as Finegan does in post-match interviews.
7. In which season did George Smith debut for the Brumbies?

Answer: 2000

Brumbies coach Eddie Jones 'discovered' George Smith while he was trialing for an NRL team, the Manly Warringah Sea-Eagles. He quickly signed him and turned him into a rugby union superstar, described as the finest flanker in the world, and the "Don Bradman" of rugby union. One can only imagine what he may have done in rugby league.
8. Which Super 12 team did Scott Fava play for before coming to the Brumbies?

Answer: Queensland Reds

He played five games for the Reds before being picked up by the Brumbies, to cover the loss of Jim Williams.
9. George Gregan was once jokingly nominated for "Referee of the Year" at the Fox Super 12 Awards. Which referee was he most noted for having on field confrontations with?

Answer: Andre Watson

The Brumbies have an appalling record when playing with Andre Watson as opposed to with other referees. Despite this, Gregan has had some joy with Andre, winning the World Cup in 1999, and the 2004 Super 12 final. In fairness this bad record is partially caused by Andre being South African, which means he only referees Brumbies' games when they are playing New Zealand teams.
10. Stephen Larkham has done many phenomenal things on the field for the Brumbies. Which of these hasn't he done?

Answer: Scored the match winning try in the 2001 Super 12s Final.

Larkham has done many great things, but it was Joe Roff who made the blistering break to set up the Brumbies win in 2001 over the Sharks.
11. ACT rugby legends: how many times did famous number 11 David Campese play for the Wallabies?

Answer: 101

'Campo' was actually from Queanbeyan, but is claimed as an ACT player. He debuted for the Wallabies as a 19 year old in 1982, and kept on going to rack up 101 caps for his country.
12. Which of the following is not true about the prodigious talen, Matt Giteau?

Answer: He made his Super 12 debut while only 19.

Matt had to wait until he was 20 to play for the Brumbies, but had already played against England in Twickenham. His father was a rugby league player for the Canberra Raiders. Matt Henjak's father was also a rugby league great, and young Giteau and Henjak basically grew up together, and both went to St. Edmunds in Canberra.
13. Stirling Mortlock is noted for his big strides, hard hits, and funny name. Which unusual name did he give his son, born in 2004?

Answer: Hunter

Like father, like son.
14. Which winger scored more tries in the Brumbies' successful 2004 campaign?

Answer: Mark Gerrard

Rathbone scored 9 while Gerrard ran over for 10, only just overcoming Rathbone with a hat trick in the final. Both were immediately rewarded for their efforts by being selected in the Wallabies for the first time. An interesting note is that neither player began their career with the Brumbies, Rathbone played three times for the Durban Sharks, and Gerrard gained a solitary cap for the NSW Waratahs.
15. Which French club did Joe Roff play for during his 2002 French sabbatical?

Answer: Biarritz

Joe Roff capped off his Brumbies career by scoring two tries in the final, to break Christian Cullen's record of 56. His last season was dominated off the field with jibes about his new "European habits", such as drinking excessive amounts of cappucino and turning up to training on his black Vespa.
