The 1993 World Series Trivia Quiz

One of my favorite World Series', it matched the defending champion Toronto Blue Jays, a polished, "business first" team, with the flamboyant, workman-like National League Champion Philadelphia Phillies.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which team did the Phillies beat in the National League Championship Series?

Answer: Atlanta Braves

The Phillies finished last in their division in '92, and were not expected to beat the powerful Atlanta Braves. The Blue Jays beat the Chicago White Sox to advance to the dance.
2. Who was the only pitcher from either team to throw a complete game?

Answer: Curt Schilling

Schilling almost single handedly won Game 5, throwing a masterful 5- hit shutout. The others all recorded wins, but Schilling's performance in Game 5 was by far the best pitching in the Series.
3. In Game 4, which Blue Jay hurler ended up with a gash on his chin when he unwisely tried to go first to third on a Roberto Alomar single?

Answer: Todd Stottlemyre

Stottlemyre hesitated rounding second, then tried to get under Dave Hollins' tag. He ended up by sliding unceremoniously on his jaw, and was out by a mile.
4. What did Curt Schilling wear on his head while watching Mitch Williams pitch?

Answer: A towel

Schilling personified most Phillies fans' feelings by hiding under a towel whenever "Wild Thing" took to the mound in a clutch situation.
5. We all know that Toronto's skydome has a retractable roof, but was the dome open for any of the games?

Answer: No

Major League Baseball insisted that the dome remain closed, for consistency's sake, throughout the Series.
6. Who sang the Star Spangled Banner before Game One?

Answer: Aretha Franklin

R-E-S-P-E-C-T is what fans had after Aretha sang to start the Series.
7. Lenny Dykstra showed his versatility, perserverance, and tremendous talent throughout the Series. What was his nickname?

Answer: Nails

Little Lenny may have been clutch the way he hammered the ball, but he's really just as tough as "Nails".
8. Who was on base when Joe Carter took Mitch Williams deep to win Game 6 and the World series?

Answer: Henderson and Molitor

Rickey Henderson walked, Devon White flied out, then Paul Molitor singled to set the table for Carter's historic blast.
9. Joe Carter's Series winning walk off home run was not the first of it's kind. What year did Bill Mazeroski's blast win the Series for the Pittsburgh Pirates?

Answer: 1960

In the 1960 World Series against New York, the Pirate second baseman led off in the bottom of the 9th, facing Yankee hurler Ralph Terry. He hit the second pitch out of park to win the series. He later said, "It was the greatest moment of my life".
10. Who was the World Series Most Valuable Player?

Answer: Paul Molitor

Designated Hitter Paul Molitor won the MVP after hitting .500, with 2 homers and 8 RBI. He also played first base in place of American League Batting Champ John Olerud, and third base while in the National League park. Dykstra (.348 avg, 4HR, 8RBI) would have won, I believe, had the Phillies triumphed, Borders won the MVP in 1992, and Alomar also had a great series, batting .480.
