Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This goalkeeper gathered the most Fantasy Premier League points in 2013-14. He kept 15 clean sheets and missed just under two matches due to a suspension. Also, he suffers from Tourette syndrome. Who is this goalkeeper?

Answer: Tim Howard

American goalie Tim Howard used his vast experience to provide stability at the backbone of Everton's defensive line. Howard is known for his openness on dealing with life with Tourette syndrome, and is also active in helping others - especially children.
2. These two Merseyside defenders amassed not only clean sheets but an astounding 11 goals and 7 Fantasy assists between them. Do you know who they might be?

Answer: Seamus Coleman and Leighton Baines

Everton's defense was a goldmine of Fantasy points in 2013-14, and I was only able to exploit it for a short spell with Baines towards the end of the season. Baines acquires most of his goals through penalty kicks and free kicks, and his lethal crosses from the left flank often end up as assists. Coleman is a gifted first shot executor and his accurate missiles often pose a danger to the opposition keeper.
3. This veteran English defender was injured in week 25 of the premiership. He returned after a fortnight and scored a dramatic extra time winner over Everton at Stamford Bridge. Who is he?

Answer: John Terry

All options are Chelsea defenders. However, only Terry and Cole are English. As a matter of fact, Cole was dropped from the first team when Spaniard Azpilicueta was favoured as left back. The fourth regular defender was Englishman Gary Cahill.

Jose Mourinho's return to Stamford Bridge meant that defense returned to be a focal point, and his reliance on Terry was repaid as the veteran led the defensive line to 16 (out of 17) clean sheets.
4. This massive Ivorian midfielder ended up scoring 20 goals, leading his club to a second premiership title in three years. Who is he?

Answer: Yaya Toure

Yaya Toure was better this season, and ended runner up in Fantasy Premier League points. He gained extra points from becoming Manchester City's penalty taker replacing the often injured Sergio "Kun" Agüero, and from executing short range free kicks to perfection.

Brazilian Fernandinho was a newcomer to the Manchester City squad. Most of his duties were defensive. His disciplined and efficient style released Yaya Toure to engage more freely in offensive roles.

True that Wilfried Bony is an Ivorian, but he is a striker and played for Swansea in 2013-14. His 16 league goals helped the Swans to secure a Premiership spot after a turbulent season, and helped him gain the attention of the bigger clubs.

Gervinho, who is not a Brazilian as his name may suggest but rather an Ivorian, left Arsenal to AS Roma and was a dominant factor in their great season, which was only enough for second place and the accompanying Champions League spot for 2014-15.
5. From which country does the excellent attacking midfielder Adam Lallana hail?

Answer: England

With 9 goals and 9 Fantasy assists, Lallana became a key player in the 2013-14 Southampton squad. The club played fluent and fun to watch football and showcased a few other young English talents such as Jay Rodriguez, James Ward-Prowse, Nathaniel Clyne and Luke Shaw.

In the summer of 2014 Lallana was transferred from Southampton to Liverpool along with teammates Dejan Lovren and Rickie Lambert.
6. This young and promising Belgian attacking midfielder played a key role for his London club. Who is he?

Answer: Eden Hazard

Eden Hazard assumed a yet more attacking role in the 2013-14 Chelsea squad, much due to the inconsistency of the club's forwards Fernando Torres, Samuel E'too and Demba Ba. He is also the team's penalty taker, which helped him to an impressive tally of 14 goals and 10 Fantasy assists.

The other three belong to the rising wave of Belgian talents, but played for Manchester United (Fellaini) and Everton (Mirallas and Lukaku). Many, including myself, raised an eyebrow when Jose Mourinho decided to loan Lukaku from Chelsea to Everton (and eventually sell him in the summer).
7. By the end of the 2013-14 season, this legendary midfielder has still played for a single club throughout his entire career and had over 100 international caps for his national team. Who is he?

Answer: Steven Gerrard

Another regular in my past seasons FPL squads, Stevie G was a main contributor to Liverpool's superb run in 2013-14. At 33, his excellent passes, lethal free kicks and cool penalties propelled him to an impressive 13 goals and 15 Fantasy assists.

Nolan, Downing and Carroll are English players who were part of the West Ham United squad in 2013-14. They all have a Liverpudlian connection - Downing and Carroll both had a disappointing spell with Liverpool, and Nolan is a scouser.
8. Daniel Sturridge - two of his former clubs did not hold on to him and sold him. And these are not your ordinary clubs - I am talking here about Manchester City and Chelsea.

Answer: True

From age 14, Sturridge grew up in the Manchester City academy and went on to play for the senior team. Next he was sold to Chelsea where he spent 4 seasons (partly on loan to Bolton Wanderers). Chelsea sold him to Liverpool at the 2012-13 winter transfer window. It is hard to argue with his figures of the 2013-14 season - 22 goals and 8 Fantasy assists.
9. Wayne Rooney - One of the most versatile footballers of our time, and a regular in Fantasy Football League dream teams. Can you tell me which one of the following is Rooney's nickname?

Answer: Wazza

Gazza is the nickname of past footballer and sadly fallen footballer Paul Gascoigne.
10. Despite missing the opening five matches due to suspension, this superb Latin American striker became top Premiership goalscorer and top FPL point scorer. Can you tell who he is?

Answer: Suarez

After he bit the arm of Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic in one of the closing matches of 2012-13, Luis Suárez received a six match ban for the start of 2013-14 (one of which was a League Cup tie). Having had enough of being a controversial figure, Suárez came back rejuvenated and utterly focused on his football.

The fantastic Uruguayan striker led the Liverpool line to within a glimpse of the Premier League title scoring and assisting week in week out. He ended the season with an astounding 30 goals and 25 Fantasy assists resulting in an impressive tally of 295 FPL points. Oh, and I did buy Suarez on time, for a change.
