Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first Wildcats player inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and what year did this happen?

Answer: George Blanda, 1981

Blanda played for 26 years with the Bears, Colts, Oilers, and Raiders. He retired as the all-time leading scorer in NFL history. Dawson was a standout center for the Steelers during the '90s and Van Note spent the '70s and '80s with the Falcons.
2. Andre Woodson threw 325 consecutive passes (over two seasons) without an interception to set a NCAA record. Whose record did he break?

Answer: Trent Dilfer

Ware, Plunkett, and Flutie all won the Heisman, but Dilfer set a record of 271 passes attempted without an interception until Woodson shattered the mark in 2007.
3. Kentucky came close to a National title in 1950. The team finished 10-1 and beat #1 ranked Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl. Who gave UK the only loss on their record that year?

Answer: Tennessee

Tennessee beat UK 7-0 in the last game of the season. UK finished the year 10-1 and ranked #7. The controvery over the National Championship stemmed from the final ranking being issued before the bowls, as was the practice at the time. Since OU was number 1, UK fans argue that they should be considered National Champions.

The USA Today, which used the Sagarin Ranking system, supported that claim.
4. Who was the coach of the Wildcats from 1946 to 1953?

Answer: Paul Bryant

Although he would gain much more fame as the head coach at Texas A&M and Alabama, Paul "Bear" Bryant led UK to 8 straight winning seasons and four bowls during his tenure. Miller was the first coach at UK, Shively was the coach before Braynt, and Collier had the unenviable task of replacing him.
5. The 1898 Wildcats were the first to be undefeated, untied, and unscored upon in UK football history. What was their nickname?

Answer: The Immortals

UK finished with a record of 7-0-0. Considering UK played Florida, LSU, and Tennessee every year, it is entirely likely that this is a record that will stand forever.
6. Kentucky has produced some decent running backs over the years. Which one finished his college career with 3333 rushing yards?

Answer: Moe Williams

All four went on to NFL careers. Higgs played with the Cowboys, Eagles, olphins and Cardinals. Adams was with the Giants and Patriots, while Logan played for the Bengals, Dolphins, 49ers, and Redskins. Adams won a Super Bowl with the Giants in 1986, while Logan lost a Super Bowl with the Bengals in 1988, and won one while with the 49ers in 1994. Williams played for the Vikings and Ravens, but like Higgs, never reached the Super Bowl.
7. The New York Jets won Super Bowl III and the New York Giants won Super Bowl XLII with UK alumni as their backup quarterbacks. Who were these championship winning bench-warmers?

Answer: Vito Parilli and Jared Lorenzen

Parilli backed up Broadway Joe Namath and Lorenzen backed up Eli Manning. Couch never played in a Super Bowl. Rick Norton played for both the Miami Dolphins and Green Bay Packers, but never played in a Super Bowl. Blanda won 2 AFL titles with the Houston Oilers, but lost against the Packers in SB II, his only Super Bowl appearance.
8. Who rushed for 280 yards against Maryville in 1930?

Answer: Shipwreck Kelly

Williams sey a single game rushing mark with 299 yards against South Carolina in 1995. Park scored 5 touchdowns in a game against Earlham in 1914.
9. UK beat in-state rival and #9 ranked Louisville 40-34 on September 15, 2007. It was the first time they had beaten a Top 10 team since 1977, when they defeated Penn State 24-20 in Beaver Stadium. Where was Penn State ranked before losing to UK?

Answer: #4

UK finished the 1977 season 10-1 and ranked #6, but was ineligible for a bowl game because of recruiting violations. Ironically, the team ranked #5 in the final poll was Penn State, who had defeated #15 Arizona State in the Fiesta Bowl to jump from #10.

In 1978, Penn State would avenge the loss from the previous year by beating the Wildcats 30-0 in Commonwealth Statium on their way to the playing for the National Championship.
10. Kentucky has beaten the number one ranked team a few times in the history of the program. In 1951 Sugar Bowl, they defeated Oklahoma. A triple overtime thriller against LSU in 2007 was the third time. Which team and which year was their second win against a number one team?

Answer: Ole Miss, 1964

Kentucky's overall record against the top team in the country was 3-10. The win against LSU was the first victory over #1 to come at home, the win against Oklahoma was in the Sugar Bowl (New Orleans), and Ole Miss was in Jackson.
