Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the original Arizona State mascot?

Answer: Bulldog

The Bulldog was adopted as the mascot in the early years, but in 1946 the student body voted to change the mascot to the Sun Devils.
2. Why was J.R. Redmond suspended for a game during the 1999 season?

Answer: Getting married

He was suspended for a game for getting married. The story goes a bit deeper than that though. He was only married to avoid breaking NCAA rules. During the 1999 season, he borrowed a cell phone to make a call from one of the athletic department employees at ASU, he was then informed that unless they were married he was in violation of NCAA rules. Since he had already placed the call they decided to get married.

They flew to Las Vegas and were wed, after an NCAA investigation the woman was fired and Redmond was suspended because the two were not a couple at the time of the incident.
3. What conference did ASU join after leaving the Border Conference following the 1961 season?

Answer: WAC

ASU first joined a conference in 1931 when they entered the Border Conference. In 1962, the team joined the WAC where they stayed until 1977. In 1977, the team joined the Pac-10 where they remained for the rest of the century.

Answer: Fred Irish

Irish posted a 12-8 record in 8 seasons spanning ten years. He was the coach from 1897-1906, but in both the 1898 and the 1901 seasons, ASU did not field a team. When Irish retired following two straight 0-3 seasons, the team folded, and was not resurected until the 1914 season. The 1917-18 seasons and the 1920-21 seasons were also lost for various reasons.

9. Frank Kush coached ASU from 1958 into part of the 1979 season. While at ASU, did he ever coach a losing team?

Answer: Yes

From 1958-1975 his worst record was a 5-5 1966 campaign. Then in 1976, his team went 4-7. ASU rebounded with a pair of 9-3 seasons before a 3-2 start in the 1979 season ended Kush's coaching career.

Arkansas beat ASU 18-17 in the 1985 Holiday Bowl, ASU beat Michigan 22-15 in the 1986 Rose Bowl, and ASU beat Air Force in the 1987 Freedom Bowl.
