Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Virginia Cavaliers were often referred to as what other nickname?

Answer: Wahoos

The origin of "Wah-hoo-wah" is uncertain, but the cheer was used to root on UVA teams as early as 1890. The media usually refers to UVA as the Cavs, but most Virginia fans will call them the Wahoos or just the Hoos.
2. What year was the first year Virginia was ranked #1 in the AP poll?

Answer: 1990

UVA was ranked #1 for 3 weeks from October 16, 1990, until October 30, 1990. Georgia Tech were the team to knock them from the top spot, and Virginia finished the season ranked #23.
3. What team defeated UVA in the 1991 USF&G Sugar Bowl after trailing 16-0 at halftime?

Answer: Tennessee

Tennessee scored 20 points in the forth quarter to beat UVA 23-22 in one of the better Sugar Bowl games in the history of the bowl. UVA started the season 7-0 and ranked #1 but finished the season at 8-4 after losing the Sugar Bowl.
4. Virginia was the first team in the ACC to defeat Florida State since the Seminoles joined the league in 1992?

Answer: True

On October 30, 1995, 24th ranked UVA defeated the 2nd ranked Seminoles 33-28 stopping the last Seminole drive of the game at the 1 yard line. During that season UVA and FSU were tied at the top of the ACC with Virginia's only loss in the conference coming against the North Carolina Tar Heels by a score of 22-17. So far that is still the Cavaliers sole win against the Seminoles. UVA finished the season ranked #16 after defeating Georgia in the Peach Bowl.
5. When did the Cavaliers win their first Bowl game?

Answer: 1984

UVA had been to 14 bowl games starting in 1984 with the Peach Bowl, through the end of the 2003 season. They have a total bowl record of 6-8.
6. This offensive tackle was UVA's first ever unanimous All-American who helped lead them to 3 straight winning seasons and a Peach Bowl victory over Purdue in 1984.

Answer: Jim Dombrowski

Jim Dombrowski went on to spend his whole NFL career of 11 years with the New Orleans Saints who drafted him in the first round of the 1986 draft.
7. What Big East team did UVA push for to be added to the ACC expansion plans?

Answer: Virginia Tech

The original plans for ACC expansion included Miami, Syracuse, and Boston College. Because of government intervention and UVA refusing expansion if Va Tech was not added, the plans changed to just Va Tech and Miami with both schools accepting the invitation. Later Boston College was added to the plans again due to the fact that the NCAA would not allow the ACC to hold a championship game with only 11 teams.
8. Virginia's oldest rivalry against a current ACC opponent began with what school?

Answer: Wake Forest

UVA first played Wake Forest in the year of 1889. UVA won that game 46-4. UVA first played Duke in 1890 and UNC in 1892. But UVA has played UNC more than they have played any other school in football including Virginia Tech. The UVA and Maryland series didn't start until 1919 and now UMD along with Va. Tech is UVA's biggest rival in the ACC.
9. What was the name of UVA's home field in 2004?

Answer: Scott Stadium

The official name of the stadium is The Carl Smith Center, Home of David A. Harrison III Field at Scott Stadium, which has a capacity of over 62,000. It is considered one of the finer stadiums of the ACC and the NCAA.
10. Which of the following receivers set a record for career touchdowns at UVA?

Answer: Tyrone Davis

Tyrone Davis had a record total of 28 receiving touchdowns between 1991 and 1994.
