Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The five inaugural Hall of Fame inductees in 1936, in alphabetical order were Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Babe Ruth, and Honus Wagner. Which one had their name on the most ballots to be inducted?

Answer: Ty Cobb

There were 226 members of the Baseball Writers Association of America who voted on a list of 33 possible inductees. Cobb led the group by being on 222 ballots. He played his entire career with the Tigers and Athletics.
2. This franchise had a player win the batting title in the 1950s, then didn't have another one for over 50 years. Which franchise was this?

Answer: Athletics

Philadelphia Athletics' Ferris Fain batted .344 and .327, winning consecutive batting titles in 1951 and 1952. The franchise's only hitters close to a title in those 50 seasons was Carney Lansford who was runner-up in 1989 to Kirby Puckett of the Twins, and Jason Giambi in 2001 who was runner-up to Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners.
3. In 1941, Yankee Joe DiMaggio set quite an impressive record for hitting in 56 consecutive games. Who was the first player in baseball to have 40-game hitting streak?

Answer: Bill Dahlen

Keeler had a 44-game hitting streak with the Baltimore Orioles of the National League in 1897, but it was Dahlen who beat him to the punch three seasons earlier. Dahlen was a Chicago Colt (later Cubs) in 1894 when he broke George Davis' record of 33 games, with 42 of his own. Bill played his 21-season career with Chicago, Brooklyn, and Boston, all of the National League.
4. The all-star game is when the best of the best appear on the field at the same time. Which all-star pitcher set a career record for striking out 19 batters in all-stars games in his career?

Answer: Don Drysdale

Drysdale was a 14-season career Dodger. He was selected for nine all-star games. He also won the National League MVP in 1962.
5. Who was the first manager banned from Major League Baseball that did not involve gambling or association with 'underworld figures'?

Answer: Jack O'Connor

O'Connor was the manager of the St. Louis Browns in 1910, and detested Ty Cobb. With both Nap Lajoie and Ty Cobb dueling for the season batting title in a close race, O'Connor didn't want Cobb to win the batting title. He had his third baseman play extremely deep, and allowed Lajoie to beat out eight bunts on the day. O'Connor and coach Harry Howell were both banned. Ty Cobb still won the batting title in 1910.

However, with heavy research done in 1981 by the "Sporting News", they discovered an error that credited Cobb twice for a 2-for-3 day. Major League Baseball overturned the 1910 title, and awarded it to Lajoie by .001 average. Neither player was alive to experience the adjustment.
6. Who was the first National League pitcher to win two MVP awards?

Answer: Carl Hubbell

Both Johnson and Newhouser were American League pitchers. Hubbell was a 16-season career New York Giant. He won his MVPs in 1933 and 1936. He finished third in 1937 to Joe Medwick of the Cardinals and Gabby Hartnett of the Cubs. Carl also had four World Series wins in the three that he attended. He was a 1947 hall inductee.
7. Which player who qualified for a batting title and hit over .400, didn't win the batting crown?

Answer: Joe Jackson

Jackson hit .408 with the Indians in 1911, but was second to Ty Cobb's .420 in the season. Ironically, this also happened to Ty Cobb when he batted .401 in 1922, only to take a backseat to George Sisler's .420 of the St. Louis Browns.
8. In 1985, Boston's Wade Boggs joined an elite group by batting 240 hits in a season. He became the first American Leaguer in over 50 years to do this since which player?

Answer: Heinie Manush

The others were all in the National League. Manush had a season high of 241 hits in 1928 with the St. Louis Browns. He would reach the 200-hit mark another three times. He retired with 2524 hits over 17 seasons in 1939. The Hall of Famer was inducted in 1964. Wade Boggs would go on to have seven 200-hit seasons.
9. The 1989 World Series pitting the Athletics against the Giants was unique in itself with experiencing an earthquake. What other strange thing happened?

Answer: The Giants never led or ever had a tying run at-bat

Oakland provided their own shakeup for the Giants, both before and after the game three earthquake. The Giants were swept four games to none. Oakland defeated them 5-0, 5-1, 13-7, and 9-6. Kevin Mitchell led the Giants with only five hits, and Rickey Henderson led the Athletics with nine. Oakland's Dave Stewart was the series MVP for his two wins and 14 strikeouts.
10. Which player hit the very first all-star game home run?

Answer: Babe Ruth

The first game was on July 6, 1933 at Comiskey Park in Chicago. Frisch also hit one in the game, being the first National Leaguer to do it.
