Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Thundering typhoons! This little wire-haired fox terrier, created by Herge, has accompanied his human on loads of adventures, and also has an annoying habit of getting drunk and picking up random bones. In French, his name is Milou, but by what name does the English-speaking world know him?

Answer: Snowy

Snowy is Tintin's loyal pet dog and partner who accompanies him around the world. He often helps protect Tintin from enemies and is an excellent tracker, but sometimes ends up being kidnapped or hurt. Although he can't actually talk, he understands humans and often talks to himself in the comics. Milou, his French name, comes from a pet name for Herge's ex-girlfriend Marie-Louise, and Snowy was picked as an English name because it also has five letters, as well as being a reference to the little dog's white fur.

In the radio play, he is voiced by Andrew Sachs, aka Manuel from 'Fawlty Towers'.
2. The cartoons of Hanna-Barbera have several well-known dog characters. Which of these dogs was the beloved pet of Dick Dastardly, and had a very distinctive laugh?

Answer: Muttley

Muttley - who, incidentally, is one of my favourite Hanna-Barbera characters - was voiced by Don Messick and appeared in 'Wacky Races' and 'Dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines'. He and Dick Dastardly were the drivers of the Mean Machine and constantly tried to sabotage the race for other drivers.

As Muttley's name suggests, he is a mixed breed (Airedale, bloodhound, pointer and some kind of hunting dog). He usually wears a flying helmet and goggles, and like Scooby Doo, occasionally talks ('rassin frassin Rick Rastardly!') As Dick Dastardly is not the kindest of owners, Muttley often laughs at him when his evil plans go wrong.
3. Fans of 'Frasier' will remember Eddie, the beloved pet of Dr Frasier Crane's cantankerous dad Martin. What breed of terrier was he?

Answer: Jack Russell terrier

Eddie Crane was played by a Jack Russell terrier called Moose, and then by Moose's son Enzo. His habit of glaring at Kelsey Grammer became a running gag on the show, and the actors also had sardine oil smeared on their faces to make him lick them. Eddie and Frasier dislike each other, and Eddie has an annoying habit of eating meals Frasier has prepared for dates.

He is terrified of Lilith, Frasier's ex-wife.
4. Ein is an intelligent Pembroke Welsh corgi, often seen in the company of a human girl called Edward. In which anime would you find him?

Answer: Cowboy Bebop

Ein is a genetically engineered corgi, or 'data dog', who gained human-level intelligence. Spike Spiegel is not a fan of dogs, and only wants to use Ein as bait to capture a target, but the little dog ends up becoming a Bebop crew member anyway, and is arguably the most intelligent crew member. Edward - or, to give her her full name, Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivruvsky IV, which she chose herself - is a 13-year-old genius hacker who joins the crew of the Bebop after helping them take down a rogue satellite.

She is the member of the crew who is the closest to Ein.
5. Oh no, little Timmy Martin's fallen down the well again! Which of these TV dogs, played by a male rough collie called Pal, would be on hand to rescue him?

Answer: Lassie

Lassie might have been a female dog in the original book 'Lassie Come-Home', and the many films, radio plays and TV series, but in real life, the first dog to play her was actually male. Timmy Martin (played by Jon Provost) is one of Lassie's owners and probably one of her most famous companions, who appeared in the TV series from 1957 to 1964. Provost returned to the series as an adult for 'The New Lassie' in 1989. Pal died in 1958, but several of his descendants continued to play Lassie over the years.
6. Which bull terrier with black and pink eyes started out as a mascot for a clothing range, before featuring in his own cartoon with the 'Dweebs'?

Answer: Rude Dog

"Yo dudes! Get rude!" Rude Dog - his name is a reference to rudeboy culture - started life as the mascot for a range of surf and skate clothing, and was created by Brad McMahon. 'Rude Dog and the Dweebs' was a spin-off cartoon to promote the clothing, and featured a gang of dogs, the Dweebs, in various bright colours.

As well as Rude Dog, the cartoon also featured Caboose, a dachshund with a speech impediment; Winston, a snooty British bulldog; Kibble, a Chinese crested dog and the token female of the group; Reggie, a smooth fox terrier; Barney, a Great Dane from the country; Satch, a beagle; and Tweek, a chihuahua. (If you looked at the characters, you probably would have found it hard to guess what breed they were.)
7. 'The Muppet Show' had a resident dog character, Rowlf, who was also a talented musician. What instrument did he play?

Answer: Piano

Rowlf was played by creator Jim Henson - apparently his personality is closest to Henson's out of the Muppets - and then Bill Barretta. He also appeared as a puppy in the cartoon 'Muppet Babies'. He is a laid-back dog of indeterminate breed who plays the piano and was discovered by Kermit in a piano bar.

He used to be the mascot for Purina Dog Chow and was also country singer Jimmy Dean's sidekick on 'The Jimmy Dean Show'. Like many of the other Muppets, he appeared in the video for Weezer's 'Keep Fishin''.
8. The antics of Dennis the Menace have entertained generations of 'Beano' readers in the UK. The comic's cover star was often accompanied by his dog and partner in crime Gnasher, but can you recall the name of Gnasher's one-fanged son?

Answer: Gnipper

Gnipper, like his dad, was a black 'Abyssinian tripe hound' and enjoyed menacing postmen. Although Gnasher had sired several puppies, Gnipper was the only one to feature in the comic full-time and was introduced in 1986. He had five sisters, Gnatasha, Gnorah, Gnancy, Gnanette and Gnaomi, all of whom had white fur (which they got from their mother, a poodle).

The two dogs had their own strip, 'Gnasher and Gnipper'. While Gnasher had a full set of teeth, Gnipper only had one pointed fang. He later moved in with Dennis' grandma.
9. Rothko is a talking Dobermann who appears in a short film, 'My Wrongs #8245-8249 & 117', with actor Paddy Considine. Which comedian and writer, also responsible for 'Brass Eye', 'Four Lions' and 'The Day Today', voices him?

Answer: Chris Morris

'My Wrongs #8245-8249 & 117' features Paddy Considine as a nameless man who has been asked to look after Rothko, his friend's dog, and take him for walks. When he takes Rothko for a walk, he ties the leash round his neck and Rothko attacks and kills a duck. Rothko is revealed to be intelligent and capable of human speech, and says he is the man's defence lawyer, and that he is to be tried for all the wrong things he did.

Unfortunately, only the man can understand him, and other people think he's insane when he tries to explain that the dog is telling him what to do. Rothko drags the man into a church, where a baby is being christened; the baby also speaks to him. Rothko breaks free and is killed by a car, and as he dies, he tells the man that the baby is his new counsel.

The film is based on a 'Blue Jam' sketch in which Rothko was an Irish wolfhound instead of a Dobermann, and the man also tried to order food for him in a cafe.
10. Alas, a cat has managed to sneak its way into this quiz. Elinor M Brent-Dyer, the writer of the 'Chalet School' series, was a lover of large dogs and featured them in several of her books. Three of these animals are Saint Bernard dogs, and one is a cat. Can you guess which one the kitty is?

Answer: Minette

Bruno is the beloved Saint Bernard of Joey Bettany (later Maynard), who she and school odd-job boy Eigen rescue from a river. It is revealed that Rufus' owner was too poor to keep him and his fellow puppies and was planning to shoot Zita, his mother. Zita is housed at the school and Joey and her sister Madge train Rufus, and he accompanies her on several adventures.

After he dies, Joey gets another Saint Bernard, Bruno, when living in Switzerland. Both dogs are expert trackers. Minette is the name of the Chalet School's resident cat in Switzerland, where she often causes trouble by getting stuck in high places, causing some of the more impulsive girls to try and rescue her.
