Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why do the McDonald twins and their sister Shiena have to move in with the Maynards?

Answer: The Admiralty have taken over their home island.

The McDonald family live on the fictional island of Erisay, in the Highlands of Scotland, and have been educated at home. Fiona and Flora are very shy and speak with a very thick accent, and insist on wearing traditional Highland outfits on the train.

Their older brothers are in the Forces and Shiena is likely to be called up, while Flora and Fiona have to go to school. As it happens, a distant relative of theirs, Jean Mackenzie, knows Joey and asks her to take them on, which Joey reluctantly accepts.

The McDonalds have a difficult journey from Newcastle to Armiford, as the train is delayed due to an air raid. A group of friendly WAAF members look after them on the journey and share their food, but the McDonalds are shaken and exhausted by the time they get to Armiford.
2. Joey takes Flora and Fiona to Plas Howell, where the Chalet School is currently based, to meet some of the girls who will be their future classmates. Which of these girls is NOT in their class in this book?

Answer: Tom Gay

Joey decides that it would be best for the twins to meet some pupils their own age before they start school, and takes them and Shiena to Plas Howell, where they meet Julie, Nancy, Vanna and her twin sister Nella. Tom Gay has yet to appear in the series at this point, and joins the school a few books later.

The girls show the twins around the school and Joey talks to some older girls, who have all had their exam results back. She accidentally calls Flora and Fiona 'Flora and Fauna', and, much to Fiona's annoyance, the nickname sticks. Joey also introduces the twins to the Russells, and is not too pleased at Sybil's rudeness towards them. Flora and Fiona are so taken with the school and their new friends that they ask to start school as soon as possible, instead of waiting until half term.
3. Joey discovers that Flora and Fiona haven't heard about the Chalet School Peace League, and insists Daisy Venables and Robin tell them about it. The following day, which two Tyrolean girls - whose brother helped two of Joey's friends escape from a concentration camp - return to the school?

Answer: Emmie and Joanna Linders

Joey receives a call from Miss Annersley asking her and Simone Lecoutier to come to the school, as she has received a message from London signed 'two of the Peace League'. Fiona asks what the Peace League is and Joey is angry with Daisy and Robin for not telling them, so both of them explain about the Peace League (introduced in 'The Chalet School in Exile'), and how the Linders' brother Karl helped Friedel von Gluck and Bruno von Ahlen, husbands of Frieda Mensch and Wanda von Eschenau, escape from a concentration camp. Karl is now in prison, and Joey wonders if the Linders sisters are the ones who sent the message.

She turns out to be right - Emmie and Joanna arrive at the school and are reunited with their old friends, and Emmie tells the harrowing story of how she, Joanna and their aunt and uncle crossed Europe to escape the Gestapo.
4. What word does Betty Wynne-Davies make fun of Julie Lucy for overusing?

Answer: Horrid

Fiona has had a previous run-in with Betty Wynne-Davies after accidentally trapping her finger in a deckhair. Julie is telling her friends about Emmie and Joanna before they go to Guides, and uses the word 'horrid' three times. Betty overhears and makes fun of her, and Flora tells her off for being rude, despite Betty being older. Betty retorts by mocking Flora's accent and background and Fiona makes a sarcastic comment about Betty 'not knowing any better'. Betty loses her temper and slaps Fiona's face.

The other girls take Fiona to the cloakroom and wash her face, because school protocol dictates that they can't tell on Betty, but they don't want Fiona to lie about her face either if anyone asks.
5. Which other character from the Tyrolean books comes to visit Joey, along with her three children?

Answer: Princess Elisaveta

Miss Linton and a group of her pupils come to visit Joey, but Joey warns them to be quiet as her visitors are sleeping. She doesn't want to give away who the visitors are, only saying that she had a call from someone who barely spoke English, but Princess Elisaveta spoils the surprise by appearing in the doorway.

She tells Miss Linton, an old friend of hers, not to call her 'Princess' as she is now registered as Mrs Helston (her husband's mother's surname). The Nazis are occupying Belsornia and the neighbouring country of Mirania, and Elisaveta, her maid Arletta and her children all escape via the Mediterranean, France and Portugal. Elisaveta has three children, Joséphine - who later becomes a Chalet School pupil and is named for Joey - Frédéric and Charles.

She has been working as a cleaner or 'charwoman' in a Welsh village in order to provide for her family. (Arletta turns out to have been the caller.) Joey asks the girls not to tell the school that the Princess is back until she gives them permission.
6. What is the Chart of Erisay?

Answer: A map of Erisay which also shows a secret passageway into the McDonalds' house

Flora lets slip about the Chart of Erisay during Emmie's speech, and her classmates beg her to tell them what it is. She is reluctant, as it's top secret and she knows Fiona will be angry with her for mentioning it. Nella is persistent and Flora eventually gives her friends a vivid description of the island.

Unfortunately, Betty overhears. She is in a bad mood as she and Elizabeth Arnett, the Head Girl and her former best friend, have fallen out. She tells her friends what she heard from Flora and also mentions the Chart of Erisay, and, because her voice carries, a Nazi spy overhears.

As it happens, he is looking for the Chart and has narrowed his search down to Shiena and the twins. He considers befriending Betty in case she has useful information.
7. A burglar breaks into the school in an attempt to steal the Chart of Erisay, but is foiled. Who scares him away?

Answer: Robin and Mary Shand in their nightgowns

The burglar in question is the Nazi spy who overheard Betty, and he searches through the girls' lockers. Flora and Fiona have been telling their friends stories about Scottish folklore and their ancestors, and a particular story about the Kelpie scares some of the girls into hiding under their blankets. Miss Wilson has a bad feeling that something isn't right and gets up. Mary Shand and Robin also wake up after Mary talks in her sleep, and Fiona and Flora both sleepwalk. Miss Wilson encounters the twins, while Robin and Mary hear a noise in the formrooms and suspect a prank is being played.

Instead of naughty Middles, they find the burglar. As Mary is blonde, Robin has a hair net on and both girls are wearing white dressing gowns, the burglar thinks they're ghosts and they chase him out of the school.

He falls into a fountain, which Robin turns on. Matron takes both girls and the twins to the San, while Miss Wilson sends onlookers back to bed.
8. Which member of staff faints after being followed in the woods?

Answer: Miss Dene

The staff wonder what the burglar was doing and why he was targeting the girls' lockers, while Flora and Fiona figure out that he must have been looking for the Chart. Miss Dene thinks he might have been looking for documents, but Miss Annersley brushes her off. Miss Dene goes to visit Joey and forgets to tell her about the burglary - as it happens, Joey does know that the twins have something important to look after, and that Shiena has told them to ask Joey for help if anything happens. Miss Dene gets a bus back and is supposed to be asking Mr Williams, who lives in the lodge, to accompany her up the drive, but his wife tells her he's out and gives her a torch.

Unfortunately, the battery has run out and Miss Dene notices that someone is following her. Because of the blackout, she can barely see a thing and runs towards the house, but panics and faints when she hears a strange voice. Evan Evans, the gardener, carries her to safety.
9. Joey receives a black-edged telegram saying that Jack is dead, and has a mental breakdown. However, it turns out to be wrong, and Jack is actually alive. How does Joey find this out?

Answer: Fiona has psychic powers and uses them to 'see' Jack.

The twins get into trouble when they receive a threatening letter telling them to hand over the Chart - written by Betty and translated by a family friend into Gaelic, after Betty claims it is for an essay - and are late for class, and cannot tell Miss Edwards or Matron. Luckily, they are able to get hold of Joey and explain about the Chart of Erisay, and Joey promises to keep it safe.

While at Joey's house, Fiona has a vision of her brother Hugh's boat sinking - which turns out to be true - and Shiena explains that Fiona is psychic and her visions have always been right.

A chapter later, Joey receives the telegram with the bad news and becomes catatonic with grief, and Daisy, Robin, Madge and Jem are all upset as well. Jem has to give Joey a sedative after she breaks down in tears. Fiona suspects that Jack is alive and begs Joey to let her use her psychic powers to 'see' him. Joey and Miss Annersley have reservations, but Joey gives Fiona his rosary, and Fiona has visions of Jack in a ship with bandages around his head. Fiona turns out to be right when Jack later returns to Britain, and is revealed to have received a head injury and been picked up by some African fishermen after his boat went down.
10. What happens to Betty Wynne-Davies when the Nazi spy is called into the school and identifies her in a line-up?

Answer: She is expelled.

Miss Annersley calls a special assembly and is accompanied by Colonel Black, a local army officer, two policeman and the Nazi spy. She informs the school that the man is a spy and that one girl is a traitor who nearly caused an important document to fall into enemy hands.

She asks Fiona and Flora where the Chart is, and they tell her that they do not know, but can confirm it is in a safe place. Miss Annersley then tells all the girls who have heard of the Chart of Erisay to stand and gives them a lecture on the dangers of saying too much in wartime, and many of the girls are angry with them for potentially putting others in danger. Lastly, the older girls are told to walk past the spy so he can pick out the traitor.

He identifies Betty and she faints. Miss Annersley expels Betty, not just because of the seriousness of her crime, but also because the other girls would make her life hell if she stayed. Betty stays with Janie Lucy and then goes to live with an old family friend.

The school performs a Christmas play, with Fiona playing a shepherd, and she is so moved by it that she writes to Betty, although Flora disapproves.
