'Annie' is based on the comic strip about the little red-haired orphan of the same name. 'It's a Hard Knock Life' is sung by Annie and the other girls at the orphanage, about the hardships they face there. It is prompted by Miss Hannigan, the evil director of the orphanage, ordering the girls to clean it up after Annie tries to escape. Annie later escapes by hiding in a laundry basket. Jay-Z sampled the song for 'Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem)', a parody of which appears in 'Austin Powers: Goldmember'.

'West Side Story' is a retelling of 'Romeo & Juliet', relocated to New York, about a rivalry between two gangs: the white American Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks (the Capulets). Maria (played by Natalie Wood in the excellent film version), Juliet's counterpart, sings 'I Feel Pretty' while daydreaming about a date with Tony, Romeo's counterpart, unaware that he has killed her brother Bernardo.

Her friends Francisca, Consuelo, Rosalia and Estella tease her, saying she has gone crazy.

It has been adopted by various protest groups in real life, such as a group of Turkish protestors during the Gezi Park protests in 2013, who added their own verse in Turkish.

'Péron's Latest Flame' is sung by Ché, with input from both upper-class Argentinian citizens (see the lines above) and soldiers.

The upper classes look down on Eva for her working-class background, while the soldiers believe Eva is using Péron and slept her way to the top.
