Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Melbourne Football Club holds which of the following distinctions?

Answer: Oldest football club of any code in the World

Formed in 1858 and continuing without interruption ever since, it's pretty damned old. Essendon were the first premiers of the 'breakaway' Victorian Football League in 1897, but Fitzroy were the first winners of a grand final when the first was held the following year. Lamingtons are chocolate and coconut covered sponge cakes originating (in folklore) in Western Australia. Geelong kicked the highest score, against Brisbane.
2. From the Latin, what is it called when the king is ripped off the throne, as happened to Wayne Carey at the hands of newly-confirmed kings Anthony Stevens and Glenn Archer at a Warrandyte party in early 2002?

Answer: usurping

'Usurps' is Latin for throne, and Carey was on it when Stevens and Archer took exception to Wayne's social skills. Considering the entire North senior leadership group would have resigned if Carey hadn't, this ripping off the throne was a veritable usurping!
3. Arguably the greatest sporting school in Australia, Assumption College Kilmore is run by which religious order?

Answer: Christian Brothers

Roman Catholic schools are known for their football prowess in {particular;} Assumption produced Shane Crawford, Billy Brownless, Simon O'Donnell and may more great players from the Goulburn Valley, the Mallee, the Wimmera, Sunraysia and especially NSW's Riverina.

The old boys of Xavier, run by the Jesuits, are the equal most successful Amateurs team in Victoria along with brief VFL participants University Blacks. The Marist Brothers run Marcellin, where Stephen Silvagni went and the Domenican Friars are not a teaching order in Australia.
4. Where was the Bicentenary State of Origin carnival held in 1988?

Answer: Adelaide

Although State of Origin football was developed in the 1960s as a way of evening up inter-league competitions (the best non-Victorian players tended to gravitate towards the VFL), the concept has run out of steam as the game has become more truly national and each Victorian club gets a (not seized enough) chance three or four times a year to 'stick it up those South Australian bastards,' in the words of Ted Whitten. That the rugby league State of Origin series (inaugurated in 1980) is the most popular aspect of the sport is salutary of its grave problems.
5. Where did Hawthorn begin developing a second home in 2001?

Answer: Launceston

Tasmania, and northern Tasmania in particular, has been a breeding ground for some of the game's greatest players, but traditionally more for Richmond and St Kilda. The Hawks are doing quite well at converting Launcestonians.
6. How far must a kick travel to be eligible for marking?

Answer: 15m

A new rule in 2002, it's pretty subjectively judged at times.
7. In Round 19 1947 against St Kilda, with how many goals does Melbourne's Fred Fanning hold the single match goal kicking record?

Answer: 18

18.1 isn't bad. The Western Bulldogs should channel his spirit. Fanning kicked 97 in 1947, a rather modest club record for the Dees.
8. Which of the following Aboriginal legends is a Muggle?

Answer: Doug Nichols

Farmer is 'The Wizard,' Winmar 'Wizard' and Maclean 'Magic.' Nichols was 'The Pastor.' Commentators have an unfortunate obsession with 'black magic' motifs, reasoning that Aboriginal players couldn't possibly be better than others without sorcery!
9. What team did Kevin Sheedy barrack for as a kid?

Answer: Essendon

A Prahran resident (when Prahran was respectably working class, not the piece of gentrification it is now), Sheedy still barracked for Essendon on the other side of town. He played for local Richmond, but ended up coaching the Dons.
10. Which of the following greats was made a war orphan?

Answer: Ron Barassi

Ron Barassi Snr, a good VFL player, fell in the Second World War.
