Australian Football League Trivia Quiz

This is a quiz about general AFL knowledge. It doesn't have much ancient stuff like who won the grand final in 1903, but it does have a few tricky questions though.

quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which team won their third premiership in a row in 2003?

Answer: Brisbane Lions

Brisbane became the first team in nearly 50 years to win 3 premierships in a row.
2. Which of these players did not win the Brownlow medal in 2003?

Answer: Micheal Voss

This was only the second three way tie for the Brownlow medal in history. Micheal Voss won the Brownlow in 1996 and was highly fancied to win in 2003 but ended up 7th overall.
3. Who was named the Centre Half Back in the Team of the Century in 1996?

Answer: Ted Whitten

Considered by many as the greatest player of all-time. He died of cancer.
4. What did Sandy Roberts famously yell when a pig ran onto the ground with the words '4 and Plugger' written on its sides?

Answer: " There's a pig at Full Forward! "

Yes, and when the security couldn't catch it, it was left up to a Sydney player to jump and catch it.
5. What positon was Gary Ablett selected to play in the Team of the Century?

Answer: Interchange Bench

Poor old Gazza couldn't even make it into the regular side.
6. Who was voted Player of the Century?

Answer: Leigh Matthews

Lethal Liegh was voted the Player of the century but the others listed (except for Glen Jakovich, who is a West Coast Champion, but I wouldn't say AFL all time great) are all considered Legends of the game.
7. Which of the following are not AFL legends in the Hall of Fame?

Answer: Jason Dunstall

Jason Dunstall was a great Hawthorn full forward but is not a legend.
Barrie Robran is considered the greatest player never to play AFL. Robran was a star in South Australia.
8. Micheal Voss was the captain of the All-Australian team in 2002 and 2003, but who captained the Australian International Rules team in those years?

Answer: Shane Crawford

Shane Crawford was the Captain of the Hawthorn football Club and captained the International Rules Team against Ireland, because Micheal Voss was injured both years.
9. Nathan Buckley is in the Collingwood Magpies Team of the Century?

Answer: True

He was selected on the Half Back Flank.
10. Who was Fremantle's first player to be selected in an All-Australian team?

Answer: Matthew Pavlich

He was selected at Full Back in 2002, despite playing most of his football at Centre Half Back and the midfield.
11. Which of the following players was selected in the most All- Australian teams (the AFL Team of The Year through to 1990)?

Answer: Paul Roos

Paul Roos (Fitzroy/Sydney) made the All Australian team 9 times in 1985-86-87-88-89, 1991-92, 1996-97. Wayne Carey (Kangaroos) made it 7 times, in 1993-94-95-96, 1998-99-2000. Stephen Kernahan (Carlton) made it 7 times in 1985-86-87-88-89-90, and 1992. Robert Harvey (St Kilda) made it 8 times in 1992-94-95-96-97-98-99, and 2003.
12. The Brownlow Medal is named after Charles Brownlow. What position did he play?

Answer: None of the these

Charles Brownlow actually never played a game of professional football in his life. He was an Administrator for the Geelong Football Club, and they named the games highest award after him. Strange.
13. The first official AFL game played at Manuka Oval in Canberra, was played between Port Adeilede and North Melbourne. What was memorable about this game?

Answer: Winston Abraham took Mark of the Year

That was a memorable mark in the square.
14. Who was the first team to win 4 premierships in a row?

Answer: Collingwood

That was 1927-28-29-30.
15. In what year was Gary Ablett inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame?

Answer: 2005

If judged on footballing skill alone, he would certainly be there, but shortly after retiring he was involved in giving drugs to a young girl who died because of it. He was finally inducted in 2005.
16. Is Ben Cousins in West Coast Eagles team of the decade?

Answer: No

This is a bit of a trick question. The Eagles announced their team of the decade in Cousins first season so, despite him becoming a Champion, he was only a possible star back then.
17. What position is Shane Crawford in the Hawthorn team of the century?

Answer: Wasn't selected

This Brownlow medalist, the Hawthorn Captain, I think could of been squeezed on to the bench, but it wasn't to be.
18. Back in 1900, Dick Condon was suspended for 20 matches for abusive language; and 93 years later, Glen Archer was found guilty of the same crime. What was his punishment?

Answer: Monetary fine

19. How many interstate teams (i.e. non-Victorian) won a Grand Final during the 1980s and 1990s?

Answer: 2

West Coast Eagles in 1992 and 1994; Adelaide Crows in 1997 and 1998.
20. When the Brisbane Lions won the premiership 2001-02-03, how many times did they finish top of the ladder after the home and away season?

Answer: 0

Brisbane the 3 time premiership team, did not finish top of the ladder. In 2001 they finished 2nd to Essendon, in 2002 they were 2nd to Port Adelaide, and in 2003 3rd to Port and Collingwod. Luckily for the Lions, Port and the Magpies crumbled in the semis.
