John Coleman kicked 537 goals in only 98 games at an average of 5.6 a game (still a league record). He injured his knee in 1955 and never played again. He coached Essendon from 1961-67 winning the '62 and '65 flags. He died in 1973 at the age of 44. The Coleman Medal was first awarded in 1981 (to Richmond's Michael Roach) and goes to the leading goal-kicker for the season.
