Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1910, which team defeated the Chicago Cubs to win their first ever series title?

Answer: Philadelphia Athletics

The Athletics, managed by Connie Mack, were making their second series appearance, having lost to the Giants in 1905. Jack Coombs won 3 games for Philadelphia as they prevailed over the Cubs 4-1.
2. In 1911, the Philadelphia Athletics defeated the New York Giants 4-2. The turning point in the series was a ninth inning home run in game 3 by which player?

Answer: Frank Baker

Baker's home run off Christy Matthewson at the Polo Grounds tied the game at 1-1, and the Athletics eventually won 3-2 in 11 innings, taking a 2-1 lead in the series.
3. The 1912 series went to an eighth game after game 2 was called for darkness with the game tied at 6-6 after 11 innings. In game eight, which New York Giants fielder dropped a fly ball in the 10th inning to set up a Boston Red Sox championship?

Answer: Fred Snodgrass

With the Giants leading 2-1 and just 3 outs from a first series title since 1905, Snodgrass dropped an easy fly ball from Clyde Engle, allowing Engle to reach second base. Boston went on to score 2 runs to win their first World Series title since 1903.
4. The New York Giants lost their third straight series in 1913. Which Philadelphia Athletics pitcher lost a game 2 duel to Christy Matthewson, before gaining his revenge in game 5 as the Athletics clinched a 4-1 series win?

Answer: Eddie Plank

Plank gave up just two hits in nine innings in game 5 as the Athletics prevailed 3-1 to tie up the series.
5. Which NL team shocked the Athletics in 1914 to win their first ever World Series?

Answer: Boston Braves

Playing their home games at Fenway Park, home of their crosstown rivals the Red Sox, the Braves swept the defending World Series champion Athletics 4-0 behind the pitching of Bill James and Dick Rudolph.
6. The Boston Red Sox played their home games in the 1915 World Series at the newly-opened Braves Field, due to its larger capacity than Fenway Park. Which team, making their series debut, did they defeat by 4 games to 1?

Answer: Philadelphia Phillies

The Phillies had finished the NL season 7 games ahead of the Braves, thus thwarting an all-Boston series. After dropping game 1 in Philadelphia, the Red Sox surged past the Phillies with four straight victories to win their third World Series title.
7. In 1916, the Red Sox faced another first-time series opponent. Which team went down 4-1 to the men from Boston?

Answer: Brooklyn Robins

The Robins (later the Dodgers)won the NL pennant by 2.5 games from the Phillies, but only managed a single win in the series, in game 3 at Ebbets Field. As in the previous year, the Red Sox elected to play their home games in the series at Braves Field rather than their own Fenway Park ground.
8. In 1917, which AL team won their first World series title in 11 years?

Answer: Chicago White Sox

The White Sox defeated the New York Giants by 4 games to 2, with Red Faber pitching them to 3 of those victories, including the decisive game 6 at the Polo Grounds.
9. The Boston Red Sox defeated the Chicago Cubs 4-2 in the 1918 series, helped by a victory by which pitcher in the crucial 4th game?

Answer: Babe Ruth

The Babe managed only one hit and two RBIs in the series, but was credited with pitching two wins, in games 1 and 4. Some 15 months later, he was traded to the New York Yankees, thus beginning the infamous "Curse of the Bambino" which saw the Red Sox fail to win another World Series until 2004.
10. The 1919 World Series has gone down in history as the "Black Sox Scandal". Which team were the beneficiaries as the Chicago White Sox allegedly "threw" the series as part of a gambling scam?

Answer: Cincinnati Reds

The 1919 series was the first since 1903 to be decided over a best-of-nine format. The Reds leadoff man, Morrie Rath, was hit by a pitch from Eddie Cicotte on the very first pitch of the bttom end of the first innings in game one, thus supposedly signalling to onlookers that the "fix" was on.

The Reds, making their World Series debut, won the series 5-3. Eight members of the White Sox team were later banned from baseball for life for their part in the scandal.
