Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 2010, which team defeated the Texas Rangers to win their first World Series in 56 years?

Answer: San Francisco Giants

The Giants hadn't won a World Series crown since 1954 when they were known as the New York Giants (they moved to San Francisco in 1958). After winning the NL West title, they eliminated the Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies to set up a meeting with the Texas Rangers, who were making their series debut.

After winning the first two games at home, the Giants lost game three in Arlington before winning games four and five to clinch the title.
2. The Texas Rangers were back in the World Series in 2011, but came up short again, losing to the St Louis Cardinals. One strike away from losing the series in game 6, which Cardinal hit a triple to save the day and break the Rangers' hearts?

Answer: David Freese

The Rangers won three of the first five games heading into Busch Stadium for game six. Texas led the game 7-5 going into the bottom of the ninth inning. They were one out away from clinching the title when Freese came to the plate. With the count at 1-2, Freese hit a triple off the wall to tie the scores.

The Cardinals would go on to win the game in extra innings and clinched the series in game seven the following evening.
3. The 2012 World Series saw the San Francisco Giants sweep the Detroit Tigers 4-0. Which Giant hit three home runs in game one on the way to the MVP award?

Answer: Pablo Sandoval

In game one at AT&T Park, Sandoval became the fourth player in series history to hit three homers in the same game, following in the footsteps of Babe Ruth, Reggie Jackson and Albert Pujols. The Giants won the game 8-3 and took game two the following day. At Comerica Park, the Giants completed the sweep to win their seventh title in franchise history.
4. The 2013 World Series saw the Boston Red Sox defeat the St Louis Cardinals 4-2. Which Boston player won his third series title with the team and was also named series MVP?

Answer: David Ortiz

The Red Sox won in six games, clinching the series at Fenway Park - this was the first time they had clinched on home soil since 1918. Ortiz had previously been part of the Red Sox title winning teams of 2004 and 2007, and became the first non-New York Yankee to win three titles with the same team since Jim Palmer of the Baltimore Orioles won his third in 1983.
5. In 2014, the San Francisco Giants were back in the winner's circle, defeating the Kansas City Royals in seven games. Which San Francisco pitcher was named series MVP?

Answer: Madison Bumgarner

A see-saw series saw the Giants leading by three games to two coming into Kauffman Stadium for the last two games. The Royals won game six to set up a decider, and it was the Giants who edged it 3-2. Bumgarner won games one and five, the latter being a complete-game shutout. He then came out of the bullpen in game seven to pitch five scoreless innings and preserve the Giants lead.
6. The Kansas City Royals were back in the World Series in 2015, and clinched their first crown in thirty years with victory over which team?

Answer: New York Mets

The Royals last series crown had come in 1985, but they made up for the heartbreak of twelve months earlier with a 4-1 win over the Mets. After winning the first two games at home, the Royals dropped game three at Citi Field. They rebounded to win games four and five, clinching the title in the 12th inning. Royals catcher Salvador Perez won the MVP award.
7. The 2016 World Series finally saw which "curse" come to an end?

Answer: Curse of the Billy Goat

The two protagonists in the 2016 World Series were the Chicago Cubs, seeking their first title since 1908, and the Cleveland Indians, who had last triumphed in 1948. In a thrilling series, it was the Cubs who prevailed 4-3, clinching their first title in 108 years in extra innings in game seven.

This brought an end to the "Curse of the Billy Goat" which had existed since 1945 - a local tavern owner, William Sianis, was told to remove his pet goat from Wrigley Field during the 1945 World Series against the Detroit Tigers. Sianis declared the Cubs would never win again, which they didn't until 2016.
8. Which team won their first World Series crown in 2017?

Answer: Houston Astros

The Astros were an expansion team who began play in the National League in 1962 under their original nickname of Colt .45s. Their only previous series appearance saw them lose to the Chicago White Sox in 2005. Realignment of baseball's divisions in 2013 saw them transferred to the American League.

In 2017, they won the AL West and then eliminated the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees to advance to the World Series and a meeting with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The series was tied at 3-3 going into game seven at Dodger Stadium.

The Astros jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, and the Dodgers could only score one run in reply.
9. The Los Angeles Dodgers returned to the World Series in 2018 where they lost again, this time to the Boston Red Sox. What series record was established in game three at Dodger Stadium?

Answer: Most innings played

The Red Sox won the first two games at Fenway Park to put themselves in the box seat. Game three at Dodger Stadium lasted no fewer than 18 innings, the most since a 1916 game between the Red Sox and Dodgers lasted 14 innings. The score was tied at 1-1 after the regulation nine innings, then the teams scored a run apiece in the 13th. Max Muncy eventually decided matters with a home run in the bottom of the 18th.

This was as good as it got for the Dodgers, the Red Sox taking games four and five to wrap up the series 4-1.
10. The 2019 World Series saw the Washington Nationals defeat the Houston Astros 4-3 to clinch their first crown. Which "first" occurred in this series?

Answer: Visiting team won all seven games

The Washington Nationals began play in 1969 as the Montreal Expos, relocating to Washington in 2005. Their appearance in the 2019 series meant that only the Seattle Mariners of the 30 franchises who were MLB members in 2019 had yet to reach the Fall Classic.

The Nationals and Astros made history by failing to win a home game between them. The Nationals appeared to be in control after taking the first two games in Houston, before the Astros swept all three games at Nationals Park. Back at Minute Maid Park, the Nationals won game six to set up a decider.

It was the Nats who won it 6-2 to give the nation's capital its first World Series winner since the former Washington Senators in 1924.
