Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which AL team made their World Series debut in 1920?

Answer: Cleveland Indians

The Indians defeated the Brooklyn Robins 5-2 in a best-of-nine series which saw the first-ever grand slam in series history, courtesy of Elmer Smith in game 5. Two other historic events occurred in that same game. Jim Bagby became the first pitcher to hit a WS home run, whilst Bill Wambsganss pulled off an unassisted triple play.
2. An AL team made their World Series debut in 1921. Which team was this?

Answer: New York Yankees

The Yankees first World Series appearance was a losing one, the crosstown Giants emerging victorious 5 games to 3, despite trailing 0-2 at one stage. Two other firsts occurred in this series. It was the first to be broadcast on radio, and the first to be played entirely in one ballpark (the Polo Grounds).
3. The 1922 World Series between the Giants and the Yankees is best remembered for what controversial incident in game 2?

Answer: The game ended in a tie due to darkness despite the fact that the sun was still shining

Game 2 was tied at 3-3 after 10 innings when the umpire called the game off, despite there being plenty of daylight left. There was much speculation at the time that at least one team was in favour of the cancellation so as to obtain extra gate receipts from an additional game. MLB commissioner Kennesaw Mountain Landis ordered that the receipts from the game be given to charity.

The Giants eventually prevailed over the Yankees four games to none with one tie.
4. The 1923 World Series resulted in a first-ever triumph for which team?

Answer: New York Yankees

The Yankees ended their first season at the new Yankee Stadium in style, defeating the Giants 4-2 in what was the 3rd successive Subway series between the teams.
5. The 1924 World Series ended with a first time champion for the second successive year. Which team finally broke their duck in this series?

Answer: Washington Senators

The New York Giants were making their 4th successive series appearance in 1924, but it was the AL champion Senators who came out on top by 4 games to 3. The series went all the way to the 12th innings of game 7, when Earl McNeely's ground ball took a bad hop over Fred Lindstrom, allowing Muddy Ruel to score the winning run.
6. In 1925, the Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Washington Senators by 4 games to 3, with which pitcher defeating Walter Johnson in the final game?

Answer: Ray Kremer

Johnson had clinched the 1924 Series for the Senators in game 7, but failed to repeat his heroics in 1925, with Kremer pitching the Pirates to a 9-7 comeback win after replacing Johnny Morrison in the 5th inning.
7. 1926 saw which team winning their first ever World Series?

Answer: St . Louis Cardinals

The World Series crown ventured west of the Mississippi for the first time as the Cardinals outlasted the New York Yankees 4-3, with game 7 ending when Babe Ruth was caught stealing in the bottom of the 9th inning.
8. In 1927, the New York Yankees became the first AL team to sweep an NL team by four games to none. Who were their unfortunate victims?

Answer: Pittsburgh Pirates

The "Murderers Row" Yankees who had won an AL record 110 regular season games, clinched their second World Series title in five years with Babe Ruth scoring 2 home runs and 7 RBIs.
9. The Yankees repeated as World Series champions in 1928 with a 4-0 sweep over which team?

Answer: St. Louis Cardinals

The Yankees avenged their 1926 defeat by the Cardinals in emphatic fashion, with Lou Gehrig scoring 4 home runs, and Babe Ruth 3.
10. In 1929, the Philadelphia Athletics won their first World Series title since 1913, defeating which team by four games to one?

Answer: Chicago Cubs

The 1929 series turned on an amazing comeback by the Athletics in game 4. Trailing 8-0, the Athletics scored 10 runs in the 7th inning to take a 3-1 lead in the Series. Rube Walberg pitched the Athletics to a 3-2 victory in game 5 to sew up the title for Philadelphia.
