Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 2005, Alex Rodriguez became the first solely right-handed Yankee hitter to hit 40 home runs in a season since 1937. Who accomplished the feat in 1937?

Answer: Joe DiMaggio

Both Dickey and Gehrig were left handed batters. Lazzeri, not known as a power hitter, tallied only 14 HRs that season while batting only .244.
2. Former Catcher Thurman Munson died how?

Answer: Plane Crash

Munson died in a plane crash on August 2, 1979 when the plane he was piloting crashed near the Akron-Canton Regional Airport and burst into flames. Two other passengers were also aboard but survived the crash. Reports indicated that Munson was trapped inside the plane and most likely died of smoke inhilation and/or asphyxia rather than injuries sustained from the impact.

He was 32 years old.
3. Who hit the game tying HR off of Mark Wohlers in game 4 of the 1996 World Series against the Atlanta Braves that is regarded as the hit that began the Yankees late 90s string of success?

Answer: Jim Leyritz

The Yankees went on to win Game 4 8-6 in 10 innings. Wohlers will be forever questioned for throwing his 2nd best pitch, a slider, to Leyritz. Wohlers, who typically relied on his fastball to get hitters out, was never quite the same pitcher after that, despite playing in the big leagues for several more years.
4. What Yankee was MVP of the 1996 World Series?

Answer: John Wetteland

Wetteland earned a save in all 4 games the Yankees won in their 4-2 series victory.
5. Catcher Yogi Berra appeared in 14 World Series for the Yankees. How many times did Berra walk away a winner?

Answer: 10

He set records with both appearances and wins. Because Berra's playing career coincided with the Yankees' most consistent period, it enabled him to establish the Major League records for World Series games (75), at-bats (259), hits (71), doubles (10), singles (49), games caught (63), and catcher putouts (457).
6. What was the score of the Dodgers game 6 World Series clinching victory over the Yankees in the 1981 fall classic?

Answer: 9-2

56,513 were in attendance at Yankee Stadium to watch the Dodgers rout the Yankees for their first title since 1965.
7. Before becoming manager of the Yankees on November 2, 1995, had Joe Torre ever managed in the AL before?

Answer: No

Though he had managed in the NL with the Mets, Braves, and Cardinals the Yankees were Torre's first AL assignment. He went on to lead the Yankees to the postseason in each of his first 11 seasons as their manager.
8. In what 2 years was Loug Gehrig named AL MVP?

Answer: 1927 & 1936

He won the award in '27 and '36, and was also a Triple Crown winner in 1934, leading the American League in batting average, home runs, and RBIs.
9. What is the real first name of former Yankees 1B Tino Martinez?

Answer: Constantino

Tino's most notable achievements in his career came when he helped lead the New York Yankees to World Series championships in 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2000. The four titles formed one of the greatest dynasties the game has ever seen. He also won the Home Run Derby in 1997.
10. Why did Babe Ruth wear #3?

Answer: He batted 3rd in the lineup

With Ruth on the team, the Yankees won seven American League pennants and four World Series titles. He played his final Major League season with the Boston Braves in 1935. In 1936, Ruth became one of the first five players elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

In 1969, he was named baseball's Greatest Player Ever in a ballot commemorating the 100th anniversary of professional baseball. In 1998, The Sporting News ranked Ruth No. 1 on the list of "Baseball's 100 Greatest Players." The next year, baseball fans named Ruth to the Major League Baseball All-Century Team.
