Answer: Starbuck

Scully called her father "Ahab", and he called her "Starbuck"; both names are from "Moby Dick". After her parents left, Scully fell asleep on the couch. When she woke up, she saw her dad sitting in a chair mumbling, but she couldn't hear what he was saying.

She told him that she thought they had already left. Then the phone rang and it was her mother, telling her that her dad had died from a heart attack. When she looked back at the chair, it was empty. Later in the episode, Luther Lee Boggs would also call Scully "Starbuck".

Answer: Mulder had written a profile on him and understood him.

Luther Lee Boggs (Brad Dourif) was a serial killer on death row in North Carolina, and Mulder's profile had helped capture him. He had read Mulder's profile and felt that Mulder understood him. The students had been kidnapped on the anniversary of a similar kidnapping a year ago. In the previous case, the students were found dead a week later so Mulder was willing to do what was necessary to help with the case, but he didn't believe that Boggs was telling the truth. Mulder thought that Boggs orchestrated the kidnapping from in prison in an attempt to save his life: "Boggs kills because he likes it".

Side note: Did you notice Max Fenig's NICAP hat from the "Fallen Angel" episode on the coat rack in Mulder's office?

Answer: From when he was nearly executed

Boggs claimed that he had gained the ability from when he was strapped into the chair in the gas chamber. He told Scully that he received a stay of execution at the last minute but that he had already seen the other side. His family who he had killed during Thanksgiving dinner watched him eat his last meal, and the souls of his victims watched him walk to the chamber. Boggs had used his ability to describe the bracelet that the girl who was kidnapped was wearing.

Answer: Mulder's New York Knicks t-shirt

Boggs sniffed the fabric and then appeared to be possessed as he shared his visions. He said the students were being held in a cold, dark place, perhaps a cellar or condemned warehouse and there was a stone angel nearby and a waterfall but not water. Mulder then told him that he had torn the fabric off his New York Knicks t-shirt and he left.

Answer: At her father's funeral

Scully's mother told her that the song was playing when her father's ship returned from the Cuban blockade. Her father proposed to her mother as soon as he got off the ship, and the song was also played at their wedding. The funeral for Scully's father was a small affair for family only and was held at the shore, where the attendees could watch his ashes being poured into the sea as the song played. Boggs began singing the song, which startled Scully, and when she turned to look at him, she saw her father sitting there.

She closed her eyes, and when she opened them again, Boggs was sitting there and asked her, "Did you get my message, Starbuck?"

Answer: On a neon sign

When Scully stopped for a traffic light, she saw the neon sign for the Hotel Niagara. It showed a waterfall ("a waterfall, not a waterfall, not water"). Across the street from the hotel was a statue of a stone angel holding a soldier. She pulled into the alley around the corner and found a condemned building, as Boggs had mentioned.

In it she found the bracelet belonging to the female student but the students weren't there.

Answer: A fake newspaper that stated the students had been found

Mulder had the newspaper print a fake edition that stated that the students had been found, and he had it delivered to Boggs. He then waited for Boggs to have his weekly phone privileges, hoping that Boggs would call his accomplice. But instead, Boggs called Mulder and asked him why he didn't believe him and told Mulder that Scully believed him. Scully convinced Mulder to meet again with Boggs because they were running out of time.

Answer: A white cross

When Boggs was having his vision, he described the kidnapper as a small, thin man in his late twenties and that he was located in a boathouse on Lake Jordan. As Mulder and Scully were leaving, Boggs told Mulder, "Don't go near the white cross. We see you down, and your blood spills on the white cross".

When the agents raided the boathouse, they found the kidnapped girl but not the kidnapper or the kidnapped boy. Mulder spotted movement in a boat, but when he identified himself as a federal agent, he was shot. Scully ran to him and called for an ambulance; then she noticed that the crossbeam on the dock looked like a white cross and that it had blood on it.

Answer: His sentence had been commuted.

Boggs wanted his death sentence commuted to life in prison in exchange for helping free the students, but he had provided some assistance already to convince Mulder and Scully that his psychic abilities were legitimate. After Mulder was shot, and the kidnapper was identified as a suspected accomplice in Boggs' earlier murders, Scully lashed out at Boggs and accused him of setting Mulder up. Boggs said that Scully believed him and offered to prove it to her by letting her talk to her father, but then he changed his mind, "Nobody talks to anybody until I get a deal. Don't underestimate my fear of dying and don't downplay my terror of going back to that chair". Scully talked to the warden and Mulder, but no one would give Boggs a deal, so Scully pretended that he got one to get him to talk.

Answer: The devil

After Scully told Boggs that he got his deal, he thanked her and then shared his vision. He told her that he saw vats at a condemned factory and then mentioned the name, the Blue Devil Brewery. Scully started to tell him that if he really was psychic..., but then he cut her off and said, "I would have known that you lied, that there never was a deal".

He said that he knew that she'd tried, and as she was leaving, he told her, "Avoid the devil. Don't follow him into the devil. Leave that to me". When the agents raided the brewery, they rescued the kidnapped student and then went after the kidnapper. Scully saw him run across walkway in front of devil sign.

She stopped and watched as he fell through a broken rung on the walkway and fell several floors below to his death.
