Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the beginning of the episode, Scully met with Assistant Director Skinner, and later in the episode, both Mulder and Scully met with him. Who was silently present at both meetings?

Answer: The Cigarette Smoking Man

With the Cigarette Smoking Man watching, Assistant Director Skinner told Scully that he had been disappointed in her work and that he wanted to see more traditional investigation techniques used on the X-Files. As she later told Mulder, Skinner "wanted to reel me in". Later in the episode, both Mulder and Scully met with Skinner, with the Cigarette Smoking Man watching from across the room, merely listening to their conversations.

He finally spoke at the end of the episode when Skinner asked him if he believed Mulder and Scully's report. "Of course I do", he replied.
2. After Eugene Tooms was released from the sanitarium, he resumed his duties with the animal control department while he searched for his final victim. Who interrupted him as he approached his first target near a coffee stand?

Answer: Mulder

We first met Eugene Tooms in the third "X-Files" episode, "Squeeze". Mulder had tried to prevent Tooms' release from the sanitarium, but his allegations of murders committed over the past century didn't sway the review panel. Mulder pointed out to Scully that Tooms needed one more victim before he went into hibernation, and he was going to follow Tooms to prevent that from happening. Tooms meanwhile returned to his old job, and he had just removed a dead rat from the street when a customer at a coffee stand caught his attention.

As he started to approach her, Mulder blocked his way and asked him, "Excuse me. Could you help me find my dog?" Tooms hissed at Mulder, got in his van and drove off. Eugene Tooms was played by Doug Hutchison, who gained notoriety in 2011 for marrying a 16 year old girl when he was 50.
3. Scully met with Detective Briggs, who had investigated the murders thirty years ago, and he told her that one of the victims from the 1933 murders was never found. Where did he believe that victim was buried?

Answer: In the foundation of a chemical plant

Detective Briggs was convinced that Mulder was right about Tooms, and he told Scully that if Mulder and she didn't catch him, they'd be his age when Tooms killed again. He told Scully that all of the victims from 1963 were found at the crime scene with their livers extracted, but in 1933, back when he was a young sheriff, only four victims were found at the crime scene.

The fifth victim was never found, but a body part was found at a chemical plant that was under construction, and even though there was no evidence that the body part belonged to the victim, he had a hunch that it did. Briggs thought there was something about the body that made Tooms hide it because it could be linked to him, and he believed that Tooms hid the body in the cement of the plant's foundation. So Scully took Briggs to the plant, and a crew there used ground-penetrating radar to look for a body through the cement. Briggs was in a wheel chair and he rolled around the area while they worked, and he finally came to a spot where his intuition told him the body was buried.

When they started digging, they found a hand with a wedding ring.
4. Eugene Tooms selected his next would-be victim and followed the man home, with Mulder tailing his van. How did Tooms reach the house without Mulder seeing him leave the van?

Answer: He parked over a storm drain and went through the sewer.

Mulder waited in his car and watched the van but didn't see Tooms get out. After nodding off, Mulder decided to check the van, but Tooms wasn't in it. Tooms had parked over a storm drain and was trying to enter the house through the sewer. The man's wife noticed that the water in the toilet was dirty and was making a slurping sound, so she tried using a snake on it to clear what she thought was a clog.

She finally left it and closed the lid with a child lock. Tooms ended up entering the house through a window, and Mulder could see the sludgy marks he left behind on the sill. Mulder knocked on the front door and told the man that he believed there was an intruder in their house but when they went back into the man's office, his window was open and Tooms' van was gone.
5. When Mulder and Scully were on stakeout watching the house where Eugene Tooms was staying, Scully called Mulder "Fox" which made him chuckle. What was his response?

Answer: "I even made my parents call me Mulder."

Mulder and Scully used their last names on the job. He had called her Dana once after her father died, but other than that, it was Scully. Likewise, she had always referred to him as Mulder, but she was concerned about him and called him Fox. She wanted him to go home since he'd been awake for three days watching Tooms; she was worried that he'd make a mistake due to exhaustion and end up getting hurt.

He told her he couldn't officially request backup, and if she took a turn on the stakeout, she'd get in trouble.

He said he wasn't worried about his record but he was about hers: "I'd hate to see you carry an official reprimand in your career file because of me". She responded, "I wouldn't put myself on the line for anybody but you". Awwww.
6. Mulder left Scully at the stakeout at Eugene Tooms' house while he drove home to get some sleep. How did Tooms follow Mulder home?

Answer: He hid in Mulder's trunk.

Mulder had told Scully that he hadn't seen Tooms leave the house, but then they got into a conversation and weren't exactly watching the house. When Scully left Mulder's car to get into her own, and Mulder started to drive off, we saw Mulder's trunk quietly close and knew that Tooms had hitched a ride.

At home, Mulder fell asleep on the couch while watching television, and Tooms entered Mulder's apartment through the air duct.
7. Eugene Tooms went into Mulder's apartment but didn't kill him. Why was Tooms there?

Answer: To frame Mulder for assaulting him

Tooms needed one more victim before he could start his hibernation, and Mulder had twice prevented him from achieving his goal, so Tooms decided to get Mulder out of the way. Tooms entered the apartment through the vents and then punctured his cheek so that his blood dripped onto Mulder's floor.

In the next scene, Tooms was at a hospital where a police man was telling a doctor that Tooms had been found beaten up in the street. He also had a footprint on his jaw. When the doctor asked Tooms if he knew who had attacked him, he whispered to her that it was Mulder.

The police went to Mulder's apartment where they found shoes that matched the print on Tooms' face so they took him in for questioning. Mulder told Skinner that he was being framed and explained that they only had to look at Tooms' face to realize that Mulder's foot wasn't in his shoe when the mark was made. Still, Skinner told Mulder that he was forbidden to go near Tooms, which was what Tooms wanted.
8. How was Eugene Tooms finally linked to the skeleton from 1933?

Answer: Bite marks

Scully had a forensic anthropologist look at the skeleton from the chemical plant, and while he couldn't find a cause of death, he did find gnawing marks on the ribs, which he thought were from rodents. He believed the body was from the 1930s because pennies found next to it had dates in the early 1930s. Detective Briggs had given him a photo of the missing victim, and using a skull analysis, he believed the skeleton to be the missing man. Mulder said that the evidence wasn't conclusive, so Scully decided to look at the bite marks on the ribs.

She showed Mulder a three-dimensional model of Tooms' teeth that had been constructed from his dental records at the sanitarium, and they were an exact match to the bite marks on the skeleton's ribs near the location of the liver.
9. Who was Eugene Tooms' final victim?

Answer: Dr. Monte

Tooms' psychologist, Dr. Monte, went to the house where Tooms was staying to check in on him. Tooms was shredding newspapers for his nest when Dr. Monte arrived, and when the doctor asked him if he was making papier-mâché, he said that he was. Tooms said that he liked art and then he got up and closed the door. We then heard Dr. Monte's screams, and Mulder and Scully found his body when they later arrived at the scene. Mulder saw the strips of paper and said, "He's building his nest.

A thirty-year hibernation".
10. How did Eugene Tooms apparently die at the end of the episode?

Answer: He was crushed in an escalator.

Mulder and Scully returned to the location where Tooms had his previous nest, but the old apartment building had been demolished and replaced with a new building, City Center. Mulder and Scully started to head up the escalator but Mulder decided to look under the escalator since it was at the approximate place where Tooms had his old nest. Scully pointed out that there was only room for one of them to go down the crawl space under the escalator and she started to remove her coat, but Mulder stopped her: "You can get the next mutant". Mulder crawled through the space until he reached a wall made out of the paper and fluid. Suddenly, Tooms reached through the wall and grabbed him, but Mulder escaped with Tooms scurrying after him. Scully managed to pull Mulder out of the crawl space and then Mulder turned on the escalator, apparently crushing Tooms. We never saw a body but we heard him scream and saw the blood on the escalator.
