Answer: Her one night stand with Dimitri

Maria found out she was pregnant around November of 1996 and she feared that the baby was Dimitri's and not Edmund's since she had a one night stand with Dimitri in the Summer of 1996. Maria told Edmund about the one night stand and Edmund blasted her but he also wondered if Dimitri and not he was the father of Maria's unborn baby.

A paternity test was done and the original finding was that Edmund was the father but Skye changed the paternity test results to make it look like Dimitri was the father.

Erica and Dimitri planned on getting married for the third time in February of 1997. On the night of their wedding, Skye interrupted the proceedings and told Erica to not marry Dimitri. Erica collapsed and Dimitri rushed her to the hospital. At the hospital, Dr. Joe Martin broke the bad news to Erica that she had a miscarriage.

At first, Erica blamed Maria for the miscarriage but she and Maria made amends.

Erica confronted Maria at a cabin on Willow Lake about how she believed Maria and Dimitri had slept together. Maria told Erica that she and Dimitri had a one night stand. Erica blasted Maria and, when she did, Maria went into labor. Erica contemplated walking out of the cabin but Maria begged her to help. Erica obliged and she helped deliver Maria's baby. On the way to the hospital, Erica's car skittered off the road and into a lake. Erica was found to be alive but the baby was thought to be dead.

A woman named Esther Glynn found the baby and saved her. Erica found out that Esther had Edmund and Maria's baby and she convinced Esther that she was the baby's mother. Erica passed off Edmund and Maria's baby as a baby she adopted from Russia. A couple of months later, Erica returned the baby to Edmund and Maria.

Liza received a phone call from someone concerning a job offer for her in San Francisco. Adam told Liza that he did not want to divorce her. Liza got the job in San Francisco but Adam found out that the woman who hired Liza had a past career as a prostitute. Adam called up the woman and threatened to expose her past if she did not inform Liza that the job was off. Liza was furious with Adam and she stayed in Pine Valley for many more years.

Hayley thought that she had slept with Tanner and she told this to Mateo on their wedding day back in February of 1997. Mateo called off the wedding but Hayley did some digging of her own and she believed that Tanner drugged her and had sex with her while she was unconscious. Hayley confronted Tanner at the scene of the crime and, during a struggle, Tanner knocked out Hayley and thought she had died. Mateo closed in on where Tanner and Hayley were and he realized what Tanner had done. During a struggle with a gun, Mateo shot Tanner in self-defense and no charges were filed against him.

In the eyes of many people, Janet Green had been a reformed woman and Jack caught her eye. Jack and Janet dated for a little bit and this caused Trevor to be jealous. Jack and Janet, eventually, broke up and Janet started to date Trevor. Tim disliked Trevor and Janet's relationship from the start but he soon accepted it.

Dimitri missed the day when he was supposed to testify for the prosecution in Erica's trial for kidnapping Maddie Grey. On the day that Gloria Marsh was called to testify, Dimitri and Gloria entered the courtroom, at the same time, and Dimitri asked, "You mean Gloria Marick?" That was when he announced he and Gloria had just tied the knot. Erica was convicted of kidnapping Maddie Grey and sentenced to serve one year in prison.

When TransGlobal Flight 149 crashed, Maria was stuck in a part of the plane. Edmund was unconscious but Brooke and Jim found where Maria was. Maria told Brooke to rescue Maddie first. Brooke almost got Maria out of the plane but it started to go over the cliff and Jim pulled Brooke back.

Kelsey and Gillian heard about a woman that was hiring but they did not know that this woman was a madam (a woman who manages finances for prostitutes). On Kelsey and Gillian's first night at "work", police came and busted the madam and the women who she "hired" and two of those women were Kelsey and Gillian.

The charges were dropped against Kelsey but Gillian, an immigrant from Hungary, faced deportation. That was when Gillian came up with an idea to marry Scott Chandler so she could not be deported.

One day, in October of 1997, Bianca passed out and she was rushed to the hospital. A doctor diagnosed her as having Anorexia Nervosa. Erica found out about this while she was at prison and worked to get released on parole so she could help Bianca. Erica was released on parole just in time for Christmas.
