2.12 "Fallen Idol" Trivia Quiz

Intriguing title for this episode. Most of the Ewings have put themselves so high on a pedestal who could they possibly idolize? We have seen those who collaborate with this family would have far to fall, indeed, no matter from where they begin.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As this episode began Bobby grew tired of waiting to have lunch with J.R. and left the Ewing Oil building without him. Soon a football is hurling at Bobby from the crowded sidewalk. A guy named Guzzler had thrown it. How did Bobby know The Guzzler?

Answer: From college

After Bobby caught the football - and, apologized to the people he bumped while catching it - he saw Guzzler. Bobby told Guzzler rather than have a college reunion on the sidewalk they should go get something to eat. To which Guzzler responded, "And, drink!" Probably set the tone for this episode.

Here is my blooper comment for this episode: When a close-up showed the football Guzzler had thrown to Bobby (which according to Bobby he had "kept this ball ... for all these years") it showed: TEXAS 14, COLORADO 7.

Many other times during the course of the series it was mentioned that Bobby was the quarterback for SMU (Southern Methodist University) which is in Texas but is never referred to as: TEXAS.
2. J.R. was associated with two (seemingly) shady oilmen, Jeb and Willie Joe. They were in this episode to rattle J.R.'s cage - again. The actor who played Willie Joe Garr in this episode had been seen in a cowboy hat a few times before his role on "Dallas" but he became more recognizable without one but with an added mustache. Who was this guy with the great smile?

Answer: John Ashton

His appearance as Willie Joe was one that proved to be early in his multi-decade career. Ashton would go on to be seen on both television and the movies. Among the many, many credits on John Ashton's resume are those that range from bit parts to starring roles. One character for which Ashton is (most likely) well remembered is policeman John Taggart in the movie "Beverly Hills Cop" (1984).

A different look for him, too, from what we saw here when he played Willie Joe.
3. This episode was set in the late 1970s. Many of the oilmen of Texas were still enjoying a rich life from their oil fields. Willie Joe and Jeb did not want their status to change. What were they pressuring J.R. to do?

Answer: Drill for oil on Southfork

J.R. had dangled "carrots" in front of the two other oilmen, Willie Joe Garr and Jeb Ames for (apparently) years. It was obvious their relationship with J.R. was one of necessity rather than desirability; of course, J.R. had no use for them beyond doing his bidding. Both Willie Joe and Jeb were adamant that J.R. use the authority (supposedly?) given to him in a codicil of Jock's will that would allow oil to be drilled on a certain section of Southfork. J.R. was not ready to confront his family with the idea of drilling oil on Southfork - yet.
4. Bobby's friend, Guzzler, did accept Bobby's offer to stay at Southfork while he was (back) in Texas. Almost everyone seemed to be quite smitten by his tales of the famous people he knew and the places he had been. J.R. was obviously disgruntled by Guzzler's intrusion. Who else was uncharacteristically reserved at dinner, giving the impression of possible disapproval?

Answer: Pamela

Guzzler enjoyed being the center of attention around the Ewing family dinner table. J.R. was not impressed and excused himself immediately after dinner. Knowing J.R. did not enjoy Guzzler's company was enough to cause Sue Ellen to comment that she found "that man fascinating". Miss Ellie and Jock welcomed him as if he were a member of the family.

It was Pam who was noticeably tentative when interacting with Guzzler.
5. Bobby was insistent that he needed Guzzler's expertise as the fledgling Ewing Construction Company expanded. Guzzler finally agreed to the partnership. What did Guzzler do, though, that absolutely offended Pam?

Answer: He tried to kiss her while Bobby was passed out (drunk)

Guzzler and Bobby celebrated their new partnership until they were so drunk that walking was a challenge. After Guzzler and Pam were able to get Bobby into his (and Pam's) bedroom suite, Guzzler turned his attention to Pam. At first she rebuffed his romantic comments but when he actually became physical by attempting to hug and kiss her she made things clear that she was not interested.

It was difficult to read Pam's concern about the incident. Was she more upset about the approach or unsure of how it would affect Bobby?
6. J.R. managed to convince Willie Joe and Jeb that there was very good reason to maintain their status quo. Soon, though, it was Bobby and Guzzler who seemed to be the problem in J.R.'s long term plans. What did Bobby want to do that would have really devastated J.R.'s plans - for Southfork?

Answer: Guzzler convinced Bobby to build a shopping center on Southfork land

Guzzler encouraged Bobby that the two of them should be doing things in much more grandiose fashion. Rather than building a few houses in scattered neighborhoods, Guzzler wanted to build shopping centers - the bigger the better. He quickly found the "perfect" place - a remote part of Southfork that was not being used for anything else. Of course, this was the exact spot J.R. knew to be rich in underground oil.

It was important that J.R. not only keep other projects away from that area, he wanted to keep his knowledge and plans TOP SECRET - from everyone else.
7. The always amorous Lucy was smitten with the charismatic Guzzler. No doubt, he had perfected the art of being charming. Finish this quote that was taken from a scene where Lucy and Guzzler were seated alone on the Southfork patio as he described women: "Every one is different... Women are like _____. Everyone is different and everyone is beautiful".

Answer: snowflakes

After his romantic narrative worked its magic, Guzzler and Lucy talked of going horseback riding to "a great spot" - that Lucy knew, just the two of them. Their plans were thwarted by an icy stare from Pam as she joined them on the patio. Guzzler quickly made excuses to Lucy that they should go for a swim instead. Apparently, Guzzler decided his libido could be contained until he had sealed the deal with Bobby; and, that may have been contingent upon getting into good graces with Pam.
8. The plans Bobby and Guzzler had for their project would spoil the plans J.R. had for the same section of land. J.R.'s continued relationship with Willie Joe and Jeb depended on everything happening according to J.R.'s promises. What did Jock tell Bobby that made J.R.'s commitment to Willie Joe and Jeb seem deceitful?

Answer: Jock told Bobby that it was in his will "nobody could ever drill on Southfork"

J.R. had been willing to share information from his top secret "Red Files" with Willie Joe and Jeb to maintain their "trust". J.R. (and, the Red Files) affirmed that Jock would allow J.R. to drill the oil rich section of Southfork after his (Jock's) death. Quite the opposite must have been the truth. (Was anyone surprised that J.R. would be less than truthful?) Jock told Bobby that he had the same stipulation in his will that "old man Southworth" had put in his - no drilling on Southfork, by anybody, ever.
9. In spite of J.R.'s protests, Bobby did manage to convince Jock and (even) Miss Ellie to let him proceed with the plans for his construction company. J.R. was really scrambling to put a stop to those plans. Who did J.R. solicit to be the one to reveal information that he (J.R.) knew would come between Bobby and Guzzler?

Answer: Pamela

Of course, J.R. did enough research to learn that Guzzler was not all that he portrayed. Guzzler had been involved in several very questionable projects and possibly was in trouble with government authorities. J.R. hoped this would halt any plans Bobby had to partner with The Guzzler. J.R. also knew that to reveal damning information about someone as special as Guzzler was to Bobby could backfire. J.R. attempted to convince Pam to do it for him. Pam knew J.R. well enough to ask: "What are you getting out of this?" Pam had to decide which would do Bobby more harm - knowing about Guzzler or not knowing about Guzzler.
10. Ever the optimist and everyone's guardian, Bobby knew about Guzzler's problems. Bobby wanted to give Guzzler an opportunity to redeem himself and commence again. Guzzler decided rather than admit his troubles to the Ewings he would leave. What excuse did Guzzler use to leave so abruptly?

Answer: He said his project in South America had "big problems" and they needed him there

Guzzler knew Bobby was learn of his past - if he did not know the truth already - but he was not willing to admit to Bobby that he (Guzzler) was not all that Bobby had hoped he would be. Guzzler did what was the pattern for his life - when things became uncomfortable for him, he left. Without Guzzler to partner with him would Bobby want to proceed with their plans? With J.R. in the picture, it was unlikely.
