At this point "Dallas" was a relatively young series - only in its second season. Many of the show's characters were still developing. It was intriguing to learn what Sue Ellen (and others!) were willing to do for love - or money.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This episode began with Miss Ellie and Sue Ellen enjoying breakfast on the patio of Southfork. The serene scene was interrupted by a phone call - answered by Lucy - for Sue Ellen. The caller did, indeed, have a certain influence on Sue Ellen's decisions going forward. Who called for Sue Ellen?

Answer: Her mother, Patricia Shepard

It was Sue Ellen's mother, Patricia Shepard who called. We learned that Mrs. Shepard had (apparently, recently) - to quote Sue Ellen - "moved back to Dallas". In an air that long preceded the ("real life") Kardashian family but parallels eerily, Mrs. Shepard wasted no time in reiterating her intentions for Sue Ellen's younger sister, Kristin.

It would be priority number one for Kristin to meet "the right man" - just as Sue Ellen had done. Later in this same episode we would hear J.R. say to Lucy (about Kristen), "her mother has that girl's life pretty well planned out".
2. The loss in his bid for State Senate was still fresh in his mind when Cliff Barnes considered accepting the backing of his once discarded allies - those being executives from a huge oil company now in the business of land development. Cliff was summoned to meet with the group to discuss an appointment to what state agency?

Answer: Bureau of Land Management

As it was explained to Cliff the Bureau of Land Management was responsible to oversee and approve "all land use projects in the state. Building, drilling, ranching. And all new large projects would be cleared through that office." The panel of puppeteers had called Cliff to meet with them assuring Cliff they could procure the appointment for him IF he would adhere to their "terms". I loved the banter that included one of the oil barons saying (to Cliff): "Expediency is not selling out, Mr. Barnes, it is one hand washing the other". To which Cliff replied, "I'm not quite sure my hands are that dirty". Classic "Dallas" dialogue!
3. J.R. and Sue Ellen had argued about J.R.'s "carrying-on" and the scene at the Ewing family breakfast table made it clear Sue Ellen had spent the night away from Southfork. Where did J.R. go - first - in his search for Sue Ellen?

Answer: To her mother's rented residence

J.R. (of course!) lied to his family when he told them Sue Ellen had left (Southfork) very early that morning to do "some sort of ladies' affairs" with her mother. He may have convinced his family but he, himself, wondered about Sue Ellen's whereabouts enough to check with her mother. There he saw Sue Ellen's sister, Kristen, too.
4. During a visit with Sue Ellen's mother, J.R. had the opportunity to spend time with Sue Ellen's (younger) sister, Kristin, who unashamedly flirted with him. Of course, J.R. was just as blatant in showing how much he enjoyed her attention. Who was the actress portraying Kristin in this episode? (Hint: NOT Bing's daughter, this time.)

Answer: Colleen Camp

By the time Colleen Camp was seen in this episode of "Dallas" she had been an actress more than twenty years - she began working professionally at age three. Although, we "Dallas" fans are probably more likely to remember another actress, who would later be seen in the role of Kristin Shepard, Ms. Camp should be familiar to many of us TV and movie fans.

She continued to work in multiple mediums and in a variety of genres well into the 21st century.
5. J.R. arrived home and noticed Sue Ellen's car was NOT there. Bobby told J.R. that Sue Ellen had left Southfork earlier that day - with her bags packed. When Bobby offered J.R. more information and advice than J.R. wanted to hear what did J.R. say to Bobby about his unsolicited commentary?

Answer: "You take care of your wife and I'll handle mine."

Surely the phrasing of that comment was NO accident. That was J.R.'s solution to EVERYTHING - he would handle it! Bobby truly was the member of the Ewing family who seemed to always "take care." When Sue Ellen decided to "leave J.R." it was Bobby who shared her tearful exit.

The ever dependable Bobby even carried Sue Ellen's bags to her car for her so she could be gone before J.R. arrived (as she had mentioned). The snippet - "... I'll handle mine" was delivered as only Larry Hagman could have said it.

The J.R. we loved to hate!
6. There were times when J.R.'s omnipotence was supplanted. When the pregnant Sue Ellen left Southfork - and J.R. - it apparently affected the entire family. Who stomped into the offices of Ewing Oil and demanded to see J.R. to tell him that something would be done to get Sue Ellen back to Southfork?

Answer: Jock

In this scene Jock made it clear to J.R. that he (Jock) was still the patriarch of the family and what he demanded would be done. When Jock questioned J.R. about his and Sue Ellen's relationship J.R. blamed her pregnancy. He told Jock that Sue Ellen was becoming "a very unreasonable young lady". Jock would accept no excuses.

He did also mentioned that it was Miss Ellie who was worried about Sue Ellen and the baby. Thus, Jock was determined to do whatever was necessary to alleviate Miss Ellie's distress. Guess we learned WHO actually wielded the power!
7. J.R. employed a detective agency to learn where Sue Ellen was going and with whom she was spending her time but one member of her family did not need the help of a detective/agency to discover where Sue Ellen had gone when she left Southfork. Who was it?

Answer: Pamela

It was by accident that Pamela discovered Sue Ellen had been at Cliff's apartment. Pam went to Cliff's to deliver a suit he had bought from the store where she worked. Cliff was just a bit defensive when Pam mentioned she noticed the lingering scent of "one hundred dollar an ounce perfume" but when she found what she was certain was Sue Ellen's scarf Cliff told Pam it was none of her business and to "get ... out". Understandably, Pam was more than a bit concerned by what she had learned.
8. J.R. visited Cliff at his office to tell him that Sue Ellen was a lady "too expensive for a cheap little man" such as Cliff. What word did J.R. repeatedly use in his conversation with Cliff that convinced Cliff it was best to end his affair with Sue Ellen?

Answer: Scandal

J.R. knew of Cliff's determination for money, power and status and J.R. knew Cliff had political aspirations that he (Cliff) hoped would bring him all of those things. J.R. reminded Cliff it was just the hint of a scandal that had cost him (Cliff) his most recent bid for office and a scandal as big as what J.R. would make of Cliff taking Sue Ellen - and, the baby - would be political suicide for Cliff.
9. After his meeting with Cliff, J.R. went to talk with Sue Ellen. J.R. convinced her to talk with Cliff about the status of their relationship. Sue Ellen did meet Cliff and was surprised (and, obviously, very hurt) to learn of his change of heart. To what children's game did Sue Ellen compare their relationship?

Answer: Marbles

J.R. made his intentions known to Sue Ellen. She would move back to Southfork and raise the baby there. If she refused, he would go so far as to have her baby (forcibly) aborted, drag Sue Ellen through a messy divorce and leave her penniless - with or without Cliff Barnes. Still, Sue Ellen was willing to risk it to be with Cliff. Alas, Cliff was not.

As if that was not enough, (to rub salt into her wounds) J.R. told Sue Ellen it would be she who explained her absence to the family at Southfork because he "had a business meeting in Dallas" and he would be there overnight. J.R. wanted to make it clear she had lost every battle of their fight.
10. This episode came to a close as Cliff reacted to his recent epiphany - the one that revealed what was, indeed, of greatest importance to him. Cliff was then determined he could and would learn "how to play the game". Whom did Cliff call to start this new found life-goal process?

Answer: The executive from the oil company who offered the appointment to Cliff in return for favors

Cliff called Mr. Maxwell from the (unnamed) oil company to say he (Cliff) was ready to accept the offer of their guarantee he would get the appointment. Cliff reiterated that procuring the appointment would mean he would need to do certain favors for those who made the appointment possible for him. Cliff was only interested in getting "enough power" - at whatever the cost.
