Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the opening scenes of this episode, Pamela was on her way to the hospital to visit a family member of hers. Who was in the hospital?

Answer: Her dad, Digger Barnes

Near the end of the episode just previous to this one, we the viewing audience heard Pam receive a phone call (from her Aunt Maggie) telling her that her father, Digger, was in the hospital - "the drunk ward", as it was called by them. Of course, Pam hastened to go to the hospital to see for herself and to show her daddy she cared for him even if he had refused to see her at all.
2. Lucy and Gary apparently convinced Valene to visit Southfork with them. Just before they approached the drive, Val asked Gary to stop on the side of the road. The three took a look at a very "peaceful" setting while wondering what awaited them there. How long did Val and Gary say they had been gone?

Answer: Sixteen years

We the viewing audience were given some of the back story of Gary and Valene as they recalled their exit sixteen years ago, as Lucy listened to the two of them. Gary recalled he was scared and felt unwanted and misunderstood by everyone in the family.

He began to drink and left - alone. Valene recalled how she tried to take Lucy when J.R. arranged her exit but it was made clear to her that Lucy would be "better off" to be raised by Miss Ellie.
3. Given Gary's inclinations toward ranching rather than the oil business it was apparently very early in his visit that we saw him (alone) looking across the pastures, obviously deep in thought. Who was the first resident of Southfork to talk with Gary in an obvious attempt to quash any thoughts he may have had of a place for him on the ranch?

Answer: Ray

Ray saw Gary studying the pastures and wasted no time joining him there, only to tell him that the ranch was "run by" him (Ray) and Jock. The conversation was much about Ray being clear as to HIS place and that Gary would NOT have a place unless he (Gary) wanted to be another "hired hand".

It was amusing in this scene, though, to have Ray pontificate about how everything at Southfork was the "latest and the best" while standing in front of a pick-up truck that was (obviously) years old, with mismatched hubcaps, paint missing along the doors and the front license tag barely hanging on the bumper. Guess there had been no to opportunity to update farm vehicles - yet.
4. Good ol' J.R. joined Gary, Valene and Lucy as they shared a private family moment and told Gary of plans to have him (Gary) run a company that had recently been bought by Ewing Oil. J.R. really made the whole deal sound perfect. What was Valene's reaction to J.R.'s big plans?

Answer: She warned Gary to "pack his bags and go on out to California"

Valene was the epitome of skeptical. She warned Gary that J.R. "was up to something" and Gary should leave Southfork before J.R. had time to execute his plans to assure Gary would fail - again. Gary was convinced J.R. had changed and that his plans were most altruistic. Time would tell.
5. While most of the Ewing clan rallied to welcome Gary and Valene to Southfork, Pamela made her apologies and went to her Aunt Maggie's house to visit her own father. What was Digger's reaction to Pam's visit?

Answer: He became belligerent and made her leave

In this scene we learned that Digger's sister, Aunt Maggie, had provided a home not only for her own son, Jimmy, and her brother, Digger, but Pam and Cliff as well. Maggie warned Pam that Digger would not accept that she was married to a Ewing - ever - with the additional warning: "According to Digger everything bad is Ewing made". Digger was furious when he saw Pam had come to visit him.

He became so angry and agitated that Pam left without a kind word from him. To offer another quote from Aunt Maggie in this scene, it "was much too soon for a reunion".
6. J.R. quickly put Gary on the path to executive-in-training by insisting that he (Gary) spend hours and hours studying paperwork. Gary complied. Bobby interrupted Gary's work with a suggestion that the two of them take a break. What did Bobby want Gary to do with him?

Answer: Go for a horseback ride

Gary and Bobby shared a fun yet tender scene reminiscing about their early experiences on horseback. J.R. would have NO part of Gary taking a break, though. He laid the guilt of wife and daughter to now consider and Gary was back to the books. J.R. loved every second of it but from the expression on his face, Bobby was beginning to be more than just a bit suspicious of J.R.'s intentions for Gary.
7. Digger spoiled a tranquil moment at Southfork as he wove his car side-to-side up the driveway at a reckless rate of speed. When Jock approached Digger to ask "What ... do you think you are doing?", an (obviously) inebriated Digger punctuated his tirade with a demand that Jock pay him $10,000 for "the only thing I have that you can get". What did he want to sell?

Answer: His daughter, Pamela

This scene was drama-plus! Digger drove THROUGH two brick columns on the side of the driveway as he made his approach to the house. He threw the books, magazines and puzzles that Pam had brought him at her and the other (Ewing) family members as he launched into his outburst about the wrongs he had been done. And, yes, Digger really wanted Jock to give him $10,000 for Pam.

Instead, Jock pitched a $100 bill toward Digger, which he (Digger) collected with a single word: "Sold". Pam was understandably crushed as she and Bobby watched from behind Jock.
8. In a late night scene Pam visited Gary as he was still in the family study attempting to concentrate on the company info from J.R. Soon they were joined by Miss Ellie and Lucy. Gary admitted he was perplexed and maybe out of his element. What did he spill on the desk (and the paperwork) that created a disturbance?

Answer: Milk

Miss Ellie had brought Gary a plate of cookies and a glass of milk but as the three ladies gathered around him to voice their encouragement, the glass of milk was upset. Gary panicked - he viewed it as his inadequacy. It was the beginning of the end of his endeavor into the business world of Ewing Oil. We soon saw what was early the next morning and Gary was leaving the ranch, suitcase in hand.
9. J.R.'s plans seemed to go just as he had orchestrated. He pressured Gary into leaving the ranch once again; now there would be no reason for Valene to stay. How much money did J.R. offer Valene to leave with an escort out of the state?

Answer: $5,000

Even though it was early morning, Gary's departure was not missed by Valene - or J.R. Valene did not convince Gary to stay although she tried. Immediately after Gary left, J.R. gave Valene two choices: Leave with $5,000 and an escort out of the state, or leave with an escort out of the state. Valene's response was an attempt to slap J.R. in the face and a lecture on how Gary only tried to be the best he could be. J.R. told the rest of the Ewings that Gary had run and that Valene had accepted the money he had offered her. J.R. showed them a bogus check made payable to Valene. J.R. wanted every one to believe they were better off without Gary and Valene around them.
10. A lot of the storyline in season 2, episode 2 was about Gary's return to Southfork and his relationships with the Ewing family members. Who played the part of Gary Ewing in this episode?

Answer: David Ackroyd

David Ackroyd had appeared in leading roles for several daytime soap operas when the offer came for him to play Gary Ewing. It was among his earliest work in prime time television. The executives of "Dallas" (1978) were very pleased with his work. The two episodes in season two were his only appearances as Gary Ewing. Later in the series when Gary was written into the storyline (again) Ackroyd had a scheduling conflict that prevented him to continue the role. That certainly worked in Ted Shackelford's favor, though, as he then played Gary on "Dallas" (1978) and "Knot's Landing" (1979) for (at least parts of) more than fourteen years.
