He was laid off due to cut backs. He was also having a psychological reaction to what seemed to be a pesticide/subliminal message combo. At least, that was according to Mulder's theory about the murders in town.

They are classified as spree killings due to the sudden violent outbursts in public places and the suspects' lack of concern for survival or anonymity. Serial killers tend to cover up their actions, and stranger killings is an outdated term for serial killings.

This is a real county in Pennsylvania, and Franklin really is the county seat. The others are also Pennsylvania counties.
