Tanaka had looked ill, coughing and sweating, since Scully and Mulder had arrived. He continued to get worse, until he collapsed just after the tremor. As Ludwig and Mulder carried him out to be picked up the Search and Rescue team, he jumped off the stretcher and ran into the woods, falling down a hill.

As Ludwig and Mulder watched, an organism burst through his throat and killed him.

As Trepkos was explaining to Mulder that the organism was a parasite searching for a way to continue life, Scully was struggling with Jesse. Jesse handcuffed herself to Scully so that when the organism burst through her neck, the spores would land on her and the parasite's life would continue.

When Scully couldn't get the handcuffs broken, she carried Jesse to a door where she could put her behind glass and protect herself from the spores. Mulder ran in just after Jesse died.
