Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What news did Locke and Sayid deliver to Charlie and Hurley?

Answer: Eko was dead

Desmond told Charlie and Hurley to follow him into the jungle. Once there, they heard the news of Eko's death. Locke told Charlie that the island had killed Eko.
2. Who did Desmond save from the water?

Answer: Claire

He raced from the jungle, stated to be about a mile away, and into the ocean to rescue a drowning Claire. Charlie jumped in as well, but Desmond was already close to the beach.
3. Charlie, determined to find out how Desmond knew about Claire, plies the man with alcohol.

Answer: True

He uses a brand called MacCutcheon, which is a made up brand name. Desmond initially protested to getting drunk again, but the brand name made him reconsider. We find out later that Penny's father used it to hurt him, stating that a tiny swig of the stuff cost more than Des could make in a month. He said Des was not worthy of sharing the drink or his daughter.
4. We finally find out what happened to Desmond after he turned the fail safe key. He's somehow transported back into his life with Penny, several years earlier. He wakes up in his flat, and finds himself covered in paint. What color paint was in the can marked "Futu"?

Answer: Red

Desmond wakes to find himself on the floor, apparently after falling down and hitting his head. He is covered in red paint, and when he looks over at the over turned can he sees it reads "Futu". The rest of the word is covered with paint, could it possibly read "future"?
5. During his time "back" in his old life, Desmond starts noticing things from the island that are appearing in this old life. One thing was the time on his clock. Which "number" was the time on the clock?

Answer: 1:08

The clock had blue digital numbers that read 1:08, the total amount of time on the reset counter in the hatch.
6. On his way to meet Mr. Widmore, Desmond encounters a delivery man with a package for "815".

Answer: True

The statement causes Des to recall the numbers 4, 8, and 15 being typed into the hatch computer.
7. Did Desmond admit to Mr. Widmore that he was an actor?

Answer: No

He told the man that he was a set designer for the Royal Shakespeare Company. He did not graduate from "university", as he cared for his three brothers after his father (Widmore cuts him off). We do not hear if his father died or left the family, a mystery to remain for later.
8. What is the name of Desmond's pal, who accompanies him to the local pub?

Answer: Donovan

Desmond tried to convince Donovan that he'd time traveled back into that year, from the island. While at the pub, Des had a whole scenario of facts to convince his friend, but he was one day off and Donovan saw nothing. Shishir Kurup played Donovan. He had a brief role, on a short series in 2005, NBC's "Surface".
9. While trying to purchase an engagement ring for Penny, we learn Desmond's middle name. What is it?

Answer: David

Ms. Hawking (maybe an homage to Stephen Hawking) was shocked by Des' change of scenario. She said that he doesn't ever buy the ring, he gets cold feet and leaves the shop without it. She calls him "Desmond David Hume", thus revealing his middle name. She explains he has no choice, only a path to follow. She also says that if he does not go to the island and type those numbers in, everyone dies.
Fionnula Flanagan played Ms. Hawking. Before "Lost", I'd last seen her on "Nip/Tuck".
10. Not known by the viewing audience until the end of this episode, whose life has Desmond been trying to save in season three?

Answer: Charlie's

Charlie demanded to know how Des knew about Claire almost drowning, long enough and in time to save her. What Desmond did not want to reveal was that after his time travel, Des could still see blips of stuff flashing before his eyes. He was clear, though, that no matter how many times he prevented it, Charlie would die.

He explained that the universe has a way of "course correcting" and Charlie's fate was sealed. "Fate" was also written on the tape Charlie wore on his fingers in season one. Desmond saved Charlie by installing a lightning rod outside Claire's shelter, and once again by saving Claire from drowning.

This 'death coming for you' feel is so very "Final Destination".
