Most the flashback scenes in this episode centered on Richard and one of them showed him back in 1867 where he was known as "Ricardo". In this flashback, Richard lived in the Canary Islands with his wife, Isabella, who was not feeling well. When Richard went to go get her some medication to help, the doctor refused to aid him, citing the fact he had little money to pay him.

Richard got into a fight with the doctor regarding the medicine and he killed him. He picked up the medicine to go home to help his wife but, sadly, she died. The police deemed him the number one suspect in her death and hence arrested him in this episode.

While Richard was in prison, a minister by the name of Father Suarez visited him and Richard told him he wanted to learn English so he could live in the New World (archaic term for the Americas). Father Suarez stated that nobody would be able to forgive him for murdering his wife and hence the plan was for him to be executed.

However, Father Suarez told him he made a deal to have Richard brought to the New World as a slave to escape death.

While Richard was aboard the slave ship named the "Black Rock", there was a major storm. The result of the storm was that the ship crashed into an island and broke apart a statue. The very next day, the Smoke Monster killed everyone on the ship, save for Richard.

In a flashback scene, Richard was shocked that the Smoke Monster, who transformed into the Man in Black, did not kill him so he worked vigilantly to free himself from the chains which bound him. The Man in Black told Richard that there was one way in which he could bring his wife back to him.

He told Richard that he had to kill Jacob in order for this to happen. Richard agreed to do it but was unsuccessful in killing Jacob.
