Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. She played Saffy's daughter in 'Absolutely Fabulous' and Janey Harper in 'My Family', but what character did Daniela Denby-Ashe play in 'EastEnders'?

Answer: Sarah Hills

Daniela played Saffy's daughter in a brief sneak peak into the future in the 1995 episode of 'Absolutely Fabulous', 'The End'. Her four year appearance in 'EastEnders' included storylines involving Christianity and the fickleness of the teenage male.

Daniela is also credited as Daniella - either spelling is correct).
2. As half of the 'Mitchell Brothers' for nine years, Ross Kemp had a strong type-casting history to live down, but with roles in 'Spartacus' and 'Ultimate Force' he found the image helpful! He also appeared in a modern remake of 'A Christmas Carol' in 1999, but which character did he play in this?

Answer: Eddie Scrooge

I loved this adaptation! Not only did it include many famous names, such as Whoopi Goldberg, Michael York and Richard E Grant, it also gave a comic twist to the old tale without taking anything away from the story itself. Seeing Kemp's Scrooge trying to be nice after the second ghostly visitation is a visual treat which I would recommend to everyone!
3. Michael French arrived in Walford in 1993 and after playing a major role in Cindy's betrayal of her husband Ian, culminating in the departure of this errant wife with her two sons, he left in 1996. He played a starring role in 'Holby City' as consultant Nick Jordan, but before that he played a character called Jeff Slade in which police drama?

Answer: Crime Traveller

Michael's first role on leaving the Square was in the sci-fi police drama 'Crime Traveller' along with Chloe Annett (from 'Red Dwarf'). Chloe played a scientist who had built a time-machine in her flat, and Michael was a policeman who used it to solve crimes. Only one series was made, and aired in 1997.
4. This EastEnd actress appeared in Sun Hill Police Station in 2002, playing Inspector Gina Gold, a tough-as-nails copper who accepted no nonsense from anyone. But what was the name of the character she played in Albert Square for three years?

Answer: Irene Raymond

There were other moves between 'EastEnders' and 'The Bill', including Michael Higgs and Todd Carty. Roberta Taylor arrived in the Square in 1997, in response to a letter from her character's daughter when her ex-husband left the soap for the middle east. Forced to share a house with her son's lover and his father, she soon formed another relationship and agreed to marry Terry.

Their wedding turned into a farce when Terry's wife showed up, but later they were to marry quietly. A fling with a younger man almost destroyed their relationship, and in 2000 Terry allowed her to leave with a clear conscience.
5. When on EastEnders, he was a teenage heart throb pinup, but when he left he remained in acting, publicly stated that he 'will never record a single. My cat, Gizmo, is better at singing than me.' Was this Paul Nicholls or Joe Absolom?

Answer: Paul

Paul played Joe Wicks during his time in Walford, and did an excellent job of portraying a teenager in the merciless grip of schizophrenia. Since leaving the soap in 1995, he has been seen in many programmes and films, including 'The Biz', 'City Central', 'Canterbury Tales', 'If Only', 'Joy-Rider', 'Goodbye Charlie Bright', 'The Clandestine Marriage' and 'The Trench'.
6. Tamzin Outhwaite went on to star in the army drama 'Red Cap' after leaving 'EastEnders' in 2002, as a member of the Special Investigation Branch of the Royal Military Police. What was her character called?

Answer: Jo McDonaugh

Tamzin's character was in the Square for some time before we found out that she was Rev Alex Healey's sister, and shortly afterwards their father, Jeff, arrived. Mel proposed to Ian Beale during the 1999 eclipse in Cornwall, and the couple married on 31 December 1999 - Mel walked away from her new husband just as the New Year was being rung in.

She later married Steve Owen, and left the Square for Portugal soon after his death. We were to hear of her since that time, as she helped Lisa escape Phil Mitchell but she has not returned to the Square.
7. In 2002 he had a starring role in 'Stan the Man' and in 2003 in 'Servants'. His film/mini-series roles included parts in 'POW', 'Touching Evil' and 'A Long Time Dead'; his first role after leaving 'EastEnders' was in 'The Bill', but in which medical drama did he play Alex Dell?

Answer: Dangerfield

Joe Absolom played Matthew Rose in 'EastEnders', his character taking a roller-coaster ride of young teenager to jailbird as he got mixed up with the death of Saskia Duncan. His final appearance in the soap showed a much stronger character who was able to show Steve Owen that he was capable of looking after himself.
8. This young actor actually played a scene with Sir Lawrence Olivier when he was just five years old, and in the first ten years since leaving EastEnders he has released three albums and had starring roles in three other programmes, including 'Dangerfield' and 'Sunburn'. He was one of three teen pin-ups of the early 1990s coming from Walford, but did he play Joe Wicks, Matthew Rose or Aiden Brosnan?

Answer: A

Aiden was a promising footballer who stayed with the Fowler family while he played for Walford Town Football Club. A serious injury put paid to any hopes of a career in that direction, and his life was destroyed because he could think of no other possible future. Mixing with the local tearaway, Mandy, Aiden was soon taking drugs and very nearly killed himself before deciding to go home to his parents, leaving a distraught Mandy behind.
9. Nick Berry played Simon Wicks, the man responsible for Cindy Beale's first pregnancy (she went on to give birth to Steven, who eventually went to live with his father in New Zealand). Simon was the musical member of the cast, and was often seen playing the 'old joanna' (piano) in the Queen Vic, surrounded by singing locals. He went on to starring roles in 'In Deep', 'Heartbeat' and 'Harbour Lights', but what was the name of his character in the programme which was his first stop since leaving the Square, and for which he sang the theme tune?

Answer: Nick Rowan

Nick played all of these characters, and many more, in his post-'EastEnders' career. He has also had a mini musical career with albums and singles to his credit during and since his time in Albert Square. It is even possible that Wicksy may even return to Walford, as his son went to live with him in 2002 and either or both may come back.
10. Which actress went from being Mrs Beale in Albert Square to star in 'Two Thousand Acres of Sky' where she pretended to be married to her best friend in order to fit in with the locals in her new home on a small Scottish island?

Answer: Michelle Collins

Michelle has also starred in 'Single', 'Sunburn' and 'Daylight Robbery' since leaving Walford. Her character in 'EastEnders' was not a favourite of mine, but is a testament to Michelle's acting abilities that she was able to shed the odious Cindy Beale in order to play different characters such as Abbie in 'Two Thousand Acres of Sky'.
