Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Walter White is diagnosed with cancer and decides to make methamphetamine for money, he approaches former student Jesse Pinkman to help him distribute the product. What does he threaten to do if Jesse refuses to go into business?

Answer: Turn Jesse in to the police

Walter initially encounters Jesse as he flees from a drug bust while Walter is on a ride along with his DEA agent brother-in-law. Walter finds Jesse at home and proposes they go into business together. When Jesse refuses, wanting nothing to do with someone who obviously knows nothing about drug dealing, Walter threatens to turn Jesse in to the DEA if he continue to refuse. Jesse relents, and they partner up to make meth.
2. As drug dealers are wont to do, Walt and Jesse kill two rivals. Walt decides to dispose of one of the bodies in acid, but Jesse's error causes it to go horribly wrong. What did Jesse do wrong (besides murder and drug dealing)?

Answer: Put the body in a bathtub instead of a plastic bin

Walt decides to dissolve rival drug dealer Emilio's body in a vat of hydroflouric acid, which requires a specific kind of plastic container. Unable to find the required container, Jesse decides to just put the body in his bathtub and do the dissolving there. The acid eats its way through the tub and floor, causing the tub, floor, and bloody remains to come crashing through the ceiling.
3. After taking care of Emilio, Walter kills Krazy-8 after much hesitation. What finally made up Walter's mind to kill Krazy-8?

Answer: Walter discovered Krazy-8 was plotting to kill him

Walter kept Krazy-8 chained to a post with a bike lock around his neck for several days. When Walter broke a plate serving a meal to Krazy-8, Krazy-8 hid one of the plate shards. Walter noticed the missing shard and strangled Krazy-8.
4. Hank gets his first, unwitting, clue that Walter is the meth cooker when he discovers a piece of lab equipment in the desert and has it analyzed. What does Hank discover that leads back to Walter?

Answer: A ventilator from Walter's chemistry classroom

While investigating a murder, Hank discovers a ventilator and sends it to the FBI lab for analysis. It comes back with a latent label identifying it as coming from Walter's high school chemistry classroom. Walter threw the mask off in the first episode after gassing Emilio and Krazy-8, and forgot it in the desert when he and Jesse fled. Hank asks Walter about the mask, but warns Walter that one of his students probably stole the mask to make meth.
5. After Walter Jr. is arrested for trying to buy beer underage, what does Hank tell him is "not cool"?

Answer: Calling him instead of his Dad, Walter

A major storyline in "Breaking Bad" is the tension between Walter and his son Walter, Jr. For instance, Walter Jr. starts going by "Flynn" at one point in the season, which grates on Walter. When he was arrested for trying to buy beer, Walter Jr. called Hank to come get him, claiming Hank was his Dad. Hank gets Walter Jr. out of trouble, but tells him it is "not cool" to call Hank instead of Walter.
6. Walt's former colleague, Elliot Schwartz, offers him a job. Why does Walter turn Elliot down?

Answer: Walter thinks it is a cover for charity he is too proud to accept

When Skyler tells Elliot, who has become rich from the company he and Walter founded, that Walter has lung cancer, Elliot offers Walt a job. Walter correctly deduces the job offer is merely a ploy to allow Elliot to pay for Walt's cancer treatment, and Walt refuses the offer because he is too proud to accept Elliot's generosity.

The show hints that Walter had a failed relationship with Elliot's wife, Gretchen, and that was a reason Walter left the company in the first place. Walter is mad at Skyler for tell Elliot about his cancer, and Skyler is furious at Walter for refusing the offer of help.
7. As the cost of Walter's cancer treatment mounts, Skyler is forced to go back to work, and gets her old job back. Why does her sister think this is shocking?

Answer: The owner of the company once made a pass at her

When Skyler worked for Beneke Fabricators, the owner's son made a pass at her. The son now owns the company, so Marie thinks it is surprising Skyler would go back to work for the company.

Though it is true Skyler is pregnant and Marie expresses doubts that someone would hire a visibly pregnant woman, she is more surprised that Skyler would go to work for this particular company.
8. When Jesse goes home, his parents are doubtful he is clean and are very supicious of his influence on his younger brother. Why do they wind up kicking him out of the house?

Answer: They find hidden marijuana

When the cleaning lady fins a marijuana cigarette hidden in a lamp, Jesse's parents suspect it was his, confront him, and kick him out of the house. As he is leaving, Jesse's younger brother come out to say goodbye, and it turns out the marijuana was his. He thanks Jesse for covering for him, and asks for his marijuana back. Jesse crushes it on the ground and tells him "it was skunk weed anyway."

Conflict between Jesse and his parents is a frequent theme of the first season.
9. Walter and Jesse start out cooking methamphetamine using pseudoephedrine, a cold medicine, as their main precursor chemical. However, it gets increasingly difficult to obtain "pseudo" in sufficient quantity. What do Walter and Jesse do?

Answer: Steal a barrel of an alternate precursor chemical

When they run short on pseudoephedrine, Walter decides they will switch to a different recipe and use methylamine as the main precursor chemical. This necessitates the theft of a barrel of the tightly-controlled chemical, which gives them a much larger production capacity. In addition, the new recipe yields a product that is both more pure, and possesses a distinctly blue color.

Some commentators have pointed out that a brilliant chemist like Walter would have been capable of synthesizing methylamine on his own (all it takes is bubbling ammonia through methanol), but that would be much less dramatic, wouldn't it?
10. Having killed their first distributors, Walt and Jesse have to partner with a new dealer, Tuco. Unfortunately, Tuco is a vicious sociopath who beats and robs Jesse of the sample meth he brought. What does Walt do in response?

Answer: Detonates a homeade bomb in Tuco's hideout

Being the chemistry wizard he is, Walter makes a mercury fulminate bomb and brings it to Tuco's hideout. When Tuco threatens Walt as he did Jesse, Walter throws the bomb and blows up the hideout. Tuco decides Walt is not to be trifled with, pays Jesse his damages, and goes into business with them.
