Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who plays the part of David Brent?

Answer: Ricky Gervais

Ricky Gervais is an actor, comedian, writer and director from Reading in England. He co-wrote 'The Office' with Stephen Merchant who he met working for radio station XFM. Martin Freeman plays Tim on the show and Robin Ince appears in one episode as Stuart Foot. Steve Carell appears in the American version of the show in which Gervais has also appeared as Brent.
2. Which football team does Brent support?

Answer: Reading F.C

We learn Brent supports Reading F.C during a conversation with Neil and Brent's 'best friend' Chris Finch. We are given the impression that they aren't friends at all and witness bullying from Finch towards Brent. Brent however thinks Finch is the funniest and most intelligent man he knows.

In the final episode when Finch makes a nasty comment about Brent's blind date, Brent finally grows up but I can't tell you exactly what he says here!
3. Brent was once in a rock band. What was the name of the band?

Answer: Foregone Conclusion

Brent claims his band Foregone Conclusion was once supported by Texas. Texas is a real life successful Scottish pop band. Seona Dancing was the name of Ricky Gervais' band that split in 1984. Much of the series is based around Brent's boasting and playing up to the cameras and claiming to be a 'chilled out entertainer'.

He does indeed play the guitar and we hear him sing a couple of his own songs.
4. What is the name of the paper merchants that Brent works for?

Answer: Wernham-Hogg

Wernham-Hogg is a fictional paper company based in Slough. Slough itself was made famous due to John Betjeman who wrote a poem called "Slough" which includes the line 'Come, friendly bombs and fall on Slough/It isn't fit for humans now'.
5. In the Christmas special episodes we learn that Brent has a pet dog. What is the name of the dog?

Answer: Nelson

At the start of the second series Brent is told off by his boss for telling a racist joke to his staff. Ever since then he has tried to make amends and is always telling a mixed-race man who works there all about his favorite black actors and singers.

When he brings his dog to the office in the Christmas special he tells staff his dog is named after ex-South African President, Nelson Mandela.
6. In the Christmas special, Brent dresses up as a character from a movie whilst taking part in a celebrity blind date in a night club. Who is he dressed as?

Answer: Austin Powers

'The Office' is filmed as a documentary and by the time we get to the final episodes, Brent has become something of a celebrity. However he thinks he is more recognisable than he actually is, leading to a few awkward moments. He dresses as Austin Powers whilst taking part in a celebrity blind date and even tries an impression which doesn't go down as well as he hoped. Austin Powers was played by Mike Myers in the film.
7. In the episode where people in the office are raising money for Comic Relief, Brent performs an impromptu dance and claims he has fused which two things together?

Answer: 'Flashdance' and MC Hammer

This dance is one of the most memorable and famous moments of the whole series. He is trying once again to gain the respect and admiration of his staff but they just end up being embarrassed for him. Gervais performed the dance at a memorial concert for Princess Diana. MC Hammer is an American rapper and 'Flashdance' is a film about an exotic dancer.
8. In series two, Brent is asked to be a motivational speaker. After his speech he tries to rouse his audience by clapping and playing which song?

Answer: (Simply) The Best

Another very awkward moment when nobody at all claps along with the song and Brent is clapping high and loud! The fact that Brent is even asked to be a motivational speaker shows that despite everything he is or at least used to be respected. However when we hear the speech we wonder how this could be the case! 'Simply The Best' was originally recorded by Bonnie Tyler in 1988 but it was a hit for Tina Turner in 1989.
9. Brent has brought his guitar to the office. In order to cheer up his receptionist, Dawn, who is having relationship problems he sings her a song which we soon discover was originally written for whom?

Answer: Princess Diana

Dawn has just had an argument with her boyfriend, Lee. Brent has already been playing the guitar but calls Dawn to his office and sings the song to her. The song is clearly about Diana and even includes details of the car crash which killed her. Dawn guesses the song isn't intended to comfort her and is only Brent showing off his questionable song writing skills. Princess Diana was the first wife of Prince Charles who was known for her fund raising.

She died in 1997 in Paris.
10. In the final episode, Brent manages to find a woman who actually enjoys his company and he also makes his former staff members laugh, something he has always wanted to do. Whilst posing for a photograph he impersonates which famous T.V character?

Answer: Frank Spencer

This may be the perfect ending for Brent. He no longer works for Wernham-Hogg and his future is uncertain. But he makes his staff laugh. This is such a big deal for Brent. It is a genuine laugh, not the embarrassed giggles we are used to hearing. He is just a decent man who wants people to like him but maybe he went about it the wrong way in the past. Frank Spencer is a character played by Michael Crawford in the British sitcom 'Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em'.

The series ran between 1973 and 1978.
