Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Episode 1 introduces most of the main characters who work in and around Wernham Hogg. What television soap opera does David do an impersonation from when he first meets Ricky Howard?

Answer: EastEnders

Ricky (Oliver Chris) appears only in the first series of "The Office", and joins the team as a temporary worker. Upon being introduced to Ricky, David immediately goes into his impression of a scene from "EastEnders", which also has a character named Ricky. David Brent is also played by actor Ricky Gervais.
2. In the first episode we also meet David's boss, Jennifer Taylor Clarke,(although Brent is reluctant to call her that). When she arrives at the office, who does Jennifer ask Dawn to call?

Answer: Maintenance

Jennifer (Stirling Gallacher) comes for a meeting with David to discuss cutbacks and the merging of the Slough and Swindon branches of Wernham Hogg. When she walks into the office she mentions to receptionist Dawn (Lucy Davis) that she noticed a nasty smell in the lifts, and asks Dawn to call Maintenance to check it out.
3. Donna, the daughter of two of David's friends who is staying with him, arrives at the office in episode two. When David introduces Donna to the other staff, which of these men does David send out of the room for making a derogatory comment towards her?

Answer: Ben

David is very protective of Donna (Sally Bretton) because she is under his care. When he introduces her to everyone, Jamie (Jamie Deeks) and Keith (Ewen Mackintosh) make suggestive comments towards her which are greeted with laughter. When Ben (Ben Bradshaw) pipes up with a third comment, David tells Ben to "get out", and ends up making a fairly offensive remark himself as he lays down the rules of how Donna is to be treated.

It turns out, however, that Donna is more than capable of handling herself, and actually seems to be enjoying the attention.
4. In episode two, somebody creates an offensive picture of David and distributes it, via email, to the other workers. Brent assigns his right hand man, Gareth Keenan, to investigate and find the perpetrator. Who does Gareth recruit as his "deputy" during these investigations?

Answer: Sheila

Gareth (Mackenzie Crook) takes this task very seriously. Brent allows him to use the Meeting Room to "interrogate suspects", and Gareth places a sign the door that reads "Investigation and Meeting Room". Tim (Martin Freeman) and Dawn go through the different signs Gareth considered, including "Quiet Please Invetigation (sic) in Process" and "Gareth Keenan Investigates!" During this scene, Gareth emerges and tells Tim and Dawn to keep the noise down. Tim asks Gareth how the "invetigation" is going and whether he needs a deputy. Gareth responds that he already has one, and Sheila (Jane Lucas) appears from the room.
5. Episode 3 features the office's quiz night. David and Chris Finch are the reigning champions, although this year they face some tough competition from Ricky, who has been on TV's "Blockbusters". Which famous author do David and Ricky discuss throughout the episode?

Answer: Dostoyevsky

When David learns that Ricky has been on "Blockbusters", he attempts to undermine Ricky and prove that he is, in fact, the smarter one. David keeps approaching Ricky with facts about Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoyevsky (which he is probably looking up as he goes along) in order to test him. Ricky, however, always has the answer without even having to think about it much, which puts David out a great deal.
6. In the scene where Dawn and her fiancé Lee are talking about their plans for the future, what sort of job does Lee suggest that Dawn could get once they are married?

Answer: Cleaning

Lee (Joel Beckett) has their life together all mapped out. Their wedding will be a modest affair in a Registry Office; then they will move in with Lee's mother; Dawn can get "a few kiddies under her belt" and then she can get a "part-time cleaning job or something" while Lee's mother looks after the children. Dawn's mumbled response is "Gotta dream a dream".
7. In episode 4 we learn even more about Lee and Dawn's relationship. Which of these phrases did Lee use to propose to Dawn?

Answer: Lee love Dawn marriage?

Dawn says that she and Lee have been engaged for about three years. Lee proposed to Dawn on Valentine's Day via a message in the newspaper that read as above. Dawn points out that Lee probably had to pay for it by the word. The proposal was both "romantic and thrifty".
8. Despite being told to make cutbacks, David decides to hire a new secretary in episode 5. Before interviewing the female candidate, he takes a magazine out of his drawer to rub a cologne sample from one of the pages over himself. Which singer appears on the cover of that magazine?

Answer: Madonna

David makes it fairly obvious, as soon as he meets the two applicants, that he is going to hire Karen (Nicola Cotter) over the male Stuart Foot (Robert Ince). After getting Stuart "out of the way" first, David spruces himself up to interview Karen, slicking back his hair and dabbing on the cologne sample.

He behaves quite inappropriately throughout the interview with Karen, sitting very close to her and asking personal questions. When she begins to show discomfort he tells her she's got the job.
9. David, Tim, Gareth and Finch head out to "Chasers" night club during episode 5, and Finch immediately begins cracking onto a group of girls. Which is NOT one of the names of the girls that introduce themselves to the guys?

Answer: Sarah

Lorna is the shorter blonde; Lindsay is the heavyset blonde and Heather is the brunette. Finch fancies Lorna, and the pair end up going off together at the end of the night. David tries to chat up Lindsay, and is doing fairly well until he inadvertently reveals that the only reason he has been talking to her is because he wants her to go home with him.

When she tells him that she doesn't want to go home with him, he makes a rude comment about her having onion breath, which earns him a slap in the face.
10. In episode 6, the staff finally learn their fate, as Jennifer reveals that David has been recommended to take over her position, meaning the Slough branch will have to close. David, however, doesn't end up taking the promotion. What ailment causes David to fail the medical examination?

Answer: High blood pressure

David is initially chuffed about being promoted, and boasts about it to the rest of the staff after telling them that there will be redundancies after all and the rest will have to move to Swindon. At the End of Financial Year Party that the office has at the end of the episode, however, David announces that he has turned down the job so his staff can keep their jobs. David makes out as though this was entirely his decision to remain loyal to his staff, however a conversation with Malcolm (Robin Hooper) reveals otherwise. Malcolm points out that he has heard that David couldn't take the job because he failed the medical examination due to high blood pressure. David then pretends that he "faked" having high blood pressure just so he could stay. Malcolm finds this very difficult to believe.
