Joyce, Buffy's mum, actually helps Buffy by hitting Spike over the head with an axe. This is the first episode that we meet Spike and Drusilla and we find out that Angelus is responsible for Spike becoming a vampire. Although, Spike calls Angel his sire, it was actually Drusilla who sired Spike but Angelus sired Drusilla so he is in someway responsible.

In this episode Ethan Rayne, an old friend of Giles who worships chaos, comes to Sunnydale and opens a costume shop. It's actually E flat diminished ninth. In this episode Kendra agrees to help Buffy and the gang save Angel from Spike and Drusilla. Spike was supposed to be killed off in this episode but the character proved to be popular so Joss brought him back a few times before making him a regular character in season four.

As usual she is right and it turns out that Ted is a robot built by the human Ted Buchanan, who was dying, so that he could re-live his perfect life with his wife over and over.

In this episode the high school is being haunted by the ghosts of Grace Newman and James Stanley, a teacher and a pupil for the 1950's who were having a relationship. In this episode we see flashbacks to when Angel was sired and when he was given his soul back. We also see that a tomb has been found and that it contains a demon Acathla who, when released, can suck the world into Hell. Angelus and Drusilla steal the tomb as Angelus wants to release Acathla. Willow also makes her first attempt at restoring Angel's soul in this episode.

In this episode Buffy goes to face Angel and Spike helps by taking Drusilla away. Willow does the spell to restore Angel's soul but it is too late and Acathla has already been awoke. Buffy tells Angel she loves him, kisses him and tells him to close his eyes. She then kills him to stop Acathla.
