quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Episode 14, "Paper or Plastic?", features the return of Officer Fromansky (David Andrews), a character introduced earlier in the season. In which episode did Fromansky first appear?

Answer: All For Our Country

Officer Fromansky, the uniformed LVPD cop who threatened Gil Grissom (William Petersen) in a parking lot in "All For Our Country", shows up again, this time as a cop suspected of a "bad shoot" in a supermarket. He clearly thinks that Grissom is out to get him...but is he?
2. "Paper or Plastic" focuses on an armed robbery that takes place in a supermarket. The CSI team winds up interviewing numerous people who were witnesses to the crime. One of these people was actually an accomplice to the robbery. Which one?

Answer: the cashier

Celeste Turner, one of the cashiers at the supermarket, enlisted the help of her ex-con co-worker to gather up some armed robbers to take down the store where she worked. Unfortunately for her, five people -- including one cop -- wound up dead during the robbery. Buh-bye, Celeste!
3. Sara Sidle (Jorja Fox) shows up to a crime scene in episode 15, "Early Rollout", sucking down numerous cough drops in order to hide the beer on her breath. Only one of her co-workers seems to notice this fact, and tries to talk to her about the dangers of alcohol indulgence later in the episode. Who tries to talk to Sara about her possible drinking problem?

Answer: Jim Brass (Paul Guilfoyle)

Brass, once he has Sara alone, admits to having sought comfort in a bottle himself in his relative youth. Sara denies that she has anything resembling a problem, but later episodes seem to contradict her claim.
4. In a more personal moment in "Early Rollout", Catherine admits to Gil Grissom that she has not had sex in some time. How long, according to her own dialogue, has it been?

Answer: 7 months

This information comes out while Catherine is complaining about the fact that her job has been putting a serious damper on her personal life. It's during this conversation that Catherine also tells Gil that her father, a suspected murderer, wrote her a very large check -- and she cashed it!
5. Perhaps as a result of her noting how long it's been since her last romantic encounter, Catherine sets her sights on a new potential paramour in "Early Rollout". What does Chris Bezich, her new beau, do for a living?

Answer: He owns a nightclub.

Catherine meets Chris during a case, and the chemistry is obvious almost immediately. By the end of this episode, she is dressed to the nines and off to meet Chris for what she calls "unfinished business."
6. Sara and Catherine discover a dead male with traces of make-up on his face in episode 16, "Getting Off." What winds up being the explanation for the make-up on his face?

Answer: He was a clown.

Donny Zanko, AKA Doodles the Clown, was killed by the jealous husband of a woman who, shall we say, enjoyed the company of clowns.
7. Elsewhere in "Getting Off", Grissom and Brass discover a second dead male. They eventually learn that this man, Ed Burnell, spent most of his time trying to help a certain group of people before he was murdered. Whom did Ed try to help?

Answer: drug addicts

Burnell worked at a halfway house that specialized in helping drug addicts get clean and find drug-free lives. Unfortunately, the landlord/pimp/drug dealer of a woman Burnell was helping didn't want the woman to escape his clutches, so he killed Burnell.
8. Episode 17, "XX", opens with the discovery of a woman's body that has been crushed and dismembered by the wheels of a prison bus. Which of the following statements is NOT true concerning this woman, an inmate of the prison called Antoinette "Baby Girl" Stella?

Answer: She was African-American.

"Baby Girl", convicted on a theft charge, would have been due for release in a month. She had also been carrying on romantic relationships with both her female cellmate and a male prison guard...and, at the time of her death, she was pregnant as a result of the latter relationship.

"Baby Girl" was a blonde-haired caucasian.
9. With what unusual weapon was "Baby Girl" killed in "XX"?

Answer: a combination lock

Juanita Roya, "Baby Girl"'s cellmate, killed her one true love when she thought that she was being thrown over for a male prison guard. Juanita dropped a combination lock into a sock and whacked "Baby Girl" in the head, causing a fatal wound.
10. In the "B" story of "XX", we learn the tragic story of Adanto Adams, a young man who gambled away his life's savings, then killed himself in the hopes that his death would be ruled a murder so that his brother could cash in on a large insurance policy. At what game did Adanto lose over $100,000 in short order?

Answer: blackjack

Adanto had what he thought was a sure-fire system: the "double-up" strategy. As one of the casino managers says in this very episode: "The one thing about systems in this town -- if you got one, we want you here."
11. In episode 18, "Bad to the Bone", a remarkably (almost inhumanly!) dangerous suspect in a homicide investigation does some physical damage to a member of the CSI team with his bare hands. Who gets hurt?

Answer: Gil Grissom

Murder suspect Walter Darian goes completely berserk when Grissom tries to scrape evidence from his nails. Even though he's in an interrogation room at CSI headquarters, he goes right for Grissom's throat, and it takes several well-trained officers to subdue Darian and save Grissom's life. Grissom spends the rest of the episode sporting both marks on his neck and an uncharacteristically skittish demeanor.
12. What is NOT true about Walter Darian, the murder suspect in "Bad to the Bone"?

Answer: He had no family.

Walter Darian was something of a mystery to Grissom and his crew. He had no prior criminal record, yet he killed a man by way of what Doc Robbins (Robert David Hall) called "the most brutal beating [he had] ever seen". During his attempt to kill Grissom, Darian died suddenly while being subdued by the LVPD right there in the interrogation room at CSI headquarters.

Darian did have family, though: Beth, Walter's sister, is located and informed almost immediately of her brother's death.
13. In episode 19, "Bad Words", Grissom and Sara investigate a death that occurred in the midst of a gaming tournament. The fictional game in question is called "Logos". This game is described by at least one character in the episode as being a combination of Scrabble and another game. Which one?

Answer: chess

"Logos" looks a lot like Scrabble, but the "move clock" familiar to chess players is also a component of the game. Players are apparently judged as much by the time it takes them to make their moves as they are by the quality of the moves themselves.
14. Elsewhere in "Bad Words", Catherine, Warrick, and Nick investigate an accidental death case that turns out to be intentional arson. They eventually discover that the arsonist used chafing dish oil to set the fire in the kitchen. A "bad word" -- one not allowed to be stated outright on this site, in fact -- is "written" on the kitchen floor in this oil. With what letter does it start?

Answer: B

The "bad word" is usually directed at women, starts with a "B", and rhymes with "witch." I'm betting you can take it from there.
15. The only casualty of the house fire in "Bad Words" is Sabrina Abernathy, a high school student. Who set the fire that killed her?

Answer: her brother

In a very creepy twist (and after a few red herrings), pre-teen Sam Abernathy is revealed as the arsonist responsible for the death of his sister. And why? Well, according to his own dialogue, "Fire is cool." Brrrr!

Stay tuned for my fourth and final quiz wrapping up season four of "CSI"!
