In season 4, episode 1, "Thirty Days Without an Accident," Daryl seems to have gained the admiration of the community, both by bringing in refugees he's discovered on the road, and by bringing deer back to camp for food. When Carol tells him, "Just so you know, I liked you first," he replies, "Stop. You know, Rick brought in a lot of them, too." Carol counters, "Not recently. In season 5, episode 6, "Consumed," they encounter the painting. Daryl says he bets it cost some rich man a lot of money and that it looks like a dog sat in paint and wiped his butt all over it. Carol replies, "Really? I kinda like it," and Daryl says, "Stop." Carol tells him, "You don't know me," to which he replies, "Yeah, you keep tellin' yourself that," suggesting that he's sure he knows her well.

Daryl and Carol share this conversation while looking for Beth in season 5, episode 6. Carol says that who she was with Ed got "burned away. And I was happy about that.
