When Lori imagines Rick is dead, she begins an affair with his best friend and co-deputy, Shane. However, when Rick finds his family, Lori returns to him and keeps the affair a secret. In "The Next World," Denise asks Daryl to find orange soda on a supply run, because she wants to surprise Tara with it. "In Twice as Far," Dwight accidentally kills Denise when attempting to shoot Daryl.

Sherry becomes Negan's wife to protect Dwight. She helps Daryl to escape from the Sanctuary and later escapes herself. She leaves Dwight a farewell note, along with their wedding rings, in a house they've visited before.

In "30 Days without and Accident," Zach kisses Beth goodbye before going on a supply run with Daryl. He's bitten by a crawling walker and eaten alive, and Daryl must deliver the news to Beth. She shows very little reaction, saying that she doesn't cry anymore, and numbly turns the "Days Without an Accident" calendar from 30 back to 0.

Carl meets Enid in Alexandria. She is initially Ron Anderson's girlfriend, and somewhat distrustful of Carl. But over time, Carl and Enid form a friendship, hang out in the woods together, roller skate together, and eventually kiss. After Carl's death, Enid goes on to have a relationship with the ex-Savior Alden.

Abraham has a harsh way of breaking it off with Rosita. He tells her, "I thought you were the last woman on Earth. I was wrong." Rosita is deeply hurt, and perhaps to ease the pain, she soon takes up with Spencer Monroe, the son of the leader of Alexandria. Spencer, however, wants more of a relationship. He asks Rosita to dinner, and she reluctantly agrees.

Anne and Father Gabriel make-out in "The Bridge," but the romance ends badly. Father Gabriel spies on her and discovers she's trading people for supplies. She asks him to leave with her for another community, but when he says he has to tell Rick about her dealings, she knocks him out and ties him up. In the end, she vanishes, leaving him with a farewell note that reads, "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. I want to go fast."

While Siddiq is the father of Rosita's child, Father Gabriel is ultimately her choice of romantic partner. Eugene, who has been sweet on Rosita for a long time, rounds out the three men and a baby theme by becoming a kind of compulsive nanny to the baby.

Siddiq and Rosita apparently get together sometime during the time jump in the series. The audience is made aware that he is the father of Rosita's child, but the couple is never portrayed together. Instead, we see Rosita form a romantic relationship with Father Gabriel.
