Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Despite there only being twelve episodes made of this classic comedy, it is one of Britain's best loved sitcoms. Here are some of the characters; Basil, Sybil, Polly and Manuel.

Answer: Fawlty Towers

John Cleese took the inspiration for 'Fawlty Towers' while staying in a hotel in Torquay with the rest of the 'Monty Python' team in 1970. Without that rude hotel owner it's unlikely we would have ever encountered the wonderful comic creation Basil Fawlty.
2. The main character, Frank, lurched from one disaster to another in this slapstick sitcom?

Answer: Some Mothers do 'Ave 'Em

Michael Crawford played the well-meaning but accident-prone Frank Spencer and Michele Dotrice was his long-suffering wife Betty. 'Some Mother's do 'Ave 'Em' is remembered for the stunts (such as Frank holding onto the back of a moving bus, whilst wearing roller skates) were performed by Michael Crawford himself and not a stuntman.
3. This much loved gentle comedy featured two couples; Tom and Barbara, and Margo and Jerry.

Answer: The Good Life

'The Good Life' ran from 1975-78 and was written by John Esmonde and Bob Larbey. Tom Good gave up his job with the aim of becoming self-sufficient. He and his wife Barbara grew their own fruit and vegetables, and had a garden full of pigs and chickens, much to the chagrin of their conventional neighbours, Margot and Jerry Leadbetter.

In American, the show aired under the title "Good Neighbors".
4. In which comedy would you find these characters; Gunner 'Gloria' Beaumont, Rangi Ram, and Sergeant Major 'Shut Up' Williams?

Answer: It Ain't Half Hot Mum

'It Ain't Half Hot Mum' was set in British India towards the end of the second World War. It was written by David Croft and Jimmy Perry who later went on to create the equally successful 'Dad's Army'.
5. Victor, the recently retired grumpy man in this sitcom was fond of saying 'I don't believe it'. Do you know which sitcom he appeared in?

Answer: One Foot in the Grave

The theme song for 'One Foot in the Grave' was written and sung by 'Monty Python' Eric Idle. Richard Wilson played the frustrated Victor Meldrew to great affect. Wilson appeared in an episode of 'Father Ted' as himself, where he encountered Ted and Dougal, who of course bombarded him with his catchphrase 'I don't believe it'!
6. Betty Slocombe, Captain Peacock, and Miss Shirly Brahms appeared in this sitcom that was full of double entendres.

Answer: Are You Being Served?

'Are You Being Served?' was set in the fictional department store Grace Brothers. It ran from 1972-1985 and relied heavily on sexual innuendos and misunderstandings. A sequel 'Grace and Favour' appeared in 1992; those of you in the US will know it as 'Are You Being Served? Again!'.
7. There are several series of this classic comedy. In which one would you find Edmund, Baldrick, Nursie, Queenie, and Lord Melchett?

Answer: Blackadder ll

This series of 'Blackadder' was set in England during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, played excellently by Miranda Richardson. Edmund Blackadder is played by Rowan Atkinson, who is also well known for portraying the bumbling 'Mr.Bean'.
8. In which cult comedy would you find Lister, Rimmer and Cat?

Answer: Red Dwarf

This science fiction sitcom first ran in 1988. Craig Charles is Dave Lister the last human being in the universe. Charles has more recently appeared in 'Coronation Street' as taxi-driver Lloyd Mullaney.
9. This comedy based itself on the antics of father and son, Albert and Harold. Can you remember this classic comedy?

Answer: Steptoe and Son

Albert and Harold were rag and bone men who lived in Oil Drum Lane, they had a love/hate relationship. Harold was often heard berating Albert with 'You dirty old man'!
10. This sitcom family of Jim, Barbara, Antony, Nana, Denise and Dave barely left the sofa. Can you name the show?

Answer: The Royle Family

'The Royle Family' watched tv, ate, smoked and bickered. It was written by Caroline Aherne (Denise) and Craig Cash (Dave). In a one-off special shown in 2006, Denise gives birth to her second child who they name 'Norma' in honour of Nana, shortly before Nana dies. Nana was played excellently by Liz Smith.
