Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which elderly character could clear a room just by uttering the phrase "During the war"?

Answer: Uncle Albert, "Only Fools and Horses"

The character of Uncle Albert was played by Buster Merryfield. Although Uncle Albert served in the Merchant Navy, Buster Merryfield served as a physical training and jungle warfare instructor in World War II. He worked in banking for many years before becoming a professional actor in his late fifties.
2. "I have a cunning plan" is a phrase associated with which downtrodden character?

Answer: Baldrick

Tony Robinson played the part of Baldrick in all four of the "Blackadder" series, as well as in several one-off specials. Tony Robinson's first professional appearance was at the age of twelve when he appeared as one of Fagin's gang in the original musical production of "Oliver!".
3. Which of the eccentric characters in "The Vicar of Dibley" frequently answers questions with the phrase "No. No. No - yes."?

Answer: Jim

Jim is played by Trevor Peacock, who has had a long career as a character actor. Trevor also co-wrote the song "Mrs Brown, You've Got a Lovely Daughter" which was a hit for Herman's Hermits in the 1960s.
4. Which character frequently said "I didn't get where I am today."?

Answer: CJ, "The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin"

"The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin" charted the course of one man's mid-life crisis and mental breakdown. Although very funny, it made for uncomfortable viewing at times. CJ was Reggie's pompous boss. Other catchphrases from this series included "Great" and "Super" from Reggie's sycophantic co-workers David and Tony, and "Been a cock-up on the catering front" from Reggie's scrounging brother-in-law Jimmy as he dropped in for dinner nearly every night.
5. Who was frequently called a "Stupid Boy"?

Answer: Private Pike, "Dad's Army"

Nine series of "Dad's Army" were made between 1968 and 1977. The late Arthur Lowe played Captain Mainwaring, who was the one that delivered the disparaging remark to Pike. "Dad's Army" created a number of catchprases, among them being "They don't like it up 'em", "Don't panic!" and "Permission to speak" - all voiced by the character Corporal Jones.
6. What was Mr Humphries' catchphrase in "Are You Being Served?"?

Answer: "I'm free!"

Sixty-nine episodes of "Are You Being Served?" were made between 1972-1985. The gloriously camp Mr Humphries was played by John Inman. The pilot show was aired during the time of the Munich Olympics, when the BBC found themselves with a lot of empty airtime.

In 1992 some of the characters were reunited for "Grace and Favour", where they ran a hotel. Mr Humphries still minced around shouting "I'm free!" and Mrs Slocombe still fretted about her pet cat.
7. Poor Margaret often heard her husband utter the phrase "I don't believe it!". To whom was she married?

Answer: Victor Meldrew, "One Foot in the Grave"

"One Foot in the Grave" was shown between 1990 and 2000. Victor Meldrew was a grumpy, disillusioned man who was forced to take early retirement. He spent most of his time grumbling about the petty annoyances of life. The last episode ended with Victor's death in a road accident, and was aired on the same night that "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" aired Judith Keppel's £1,000,000 win, causing something of a ratings war!
8. Who was frequently accused of being a "dirty old man"?

Answer: Albert Steptoe, "Steptoe and Son"

"Steptoe and Son" ran from 1962 to 1972. It centred around a father and son rag and bone man business. Wilfred Bramble played Albert Steptoe, the father and "dirty old man". Harry H Corbet played his son, who used the phrase. Albert was indeed a very grubby individual.

He had some fairly unpleasant habits and once decorated the edge of a pie by using his false teeth. The show was remade for the US as "Sanford and Son" and ran from 1972 to 1977.
9. Who urged people to "Go on, go on, go on, go on, go on!"?

Answer: Mrs Doyle, "Father Ted"

Mrs Doyle was played by Pauline McLynn. She was forever plying Father Ted and his visitors with tea and sandwiches. She took refusal as a personal insult and used the above phrase to wear people down!
10. Who regularly accused his wife of being a "Silly Moo"?

Answer: Alf Garnett, "Til Death Do Us Part"

"Til Death Do Us Part" ran from 1966 to 1975. Its creator, Johnny Speight, had written the part of Alf Garnett to poke fun at racist bigots and was somewhat dismayed when people actually liked Alf. The series was remade for the US as "All In The Family" and ran from 1971 to 1979.
