Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The opening credits for a TV series from the seventies show a sheriff on horseback in New York. What is the title of this TV series?

Answer: McCloud

"McCloud" is not only the title of the TV series we're looking for, but also the name of the sheriff portrayed by Dennis Weaver. The series can be found on DVD.
Sam McCloud, as is his full name, wants a change of environment and so he leaves his country estate to apply for a job within the New York Police Department. His style of solving cases quite contrasts with the methods the metropolitan police is used to.
The series "McCloud" ran from 1970 until 1977. The principal roles were for Dennis Weaver (Sam McCloud), J.D. Cannon (chief Peter Clifford) and Terry Carter (Sergeant Joe Bradhurst).
"Columbo" was named after the apparently disorganised lieutenant in the Los Angeles Police Department (a role performed by Peter Falk). This series ran from 1971 until 1978. Later seasons were 1989 - 1993 and 2003.
"True Justice" stars Steven Seagal as the undercover agent Elijah Kane, working in and around Seattle (Washington). The series started in 2010.
"Gunsmoke" was set in Dodge City (Kansas) and debuted in 1955. James Arness played Marshall Matt Dillon for twenty seasons.
2. Soon after the death of Inspector Morse in the eponymous TV series, his detective sergeant was promoted to an Oxford police inspector in a spin-off series. What was his name?

Answer: Robert Lewis

"Inspector Lewis" is the spin-off series of "Inspector Morse". In the original series, Inspector Endeavour Morse (played by John Thaw) was the academic scholar who cracked cases thanks to his knowledge of mythology, ancient literature and opera, and whose detective sergeant Robert Lewis (a role of Kevin Whately) was portrayed as an ignoramus.
In the spin-off, Lewis is promoted to police inspector, and tries to learn all those academic references from his new Detective Sergeant James Hathaway. The series "Inspector Lewis" debuted in 2007 and continues in a similar line: to apprehend smart murderers, the police department has to solve riddles with mythic or literary sources . DVDs are available.
Ben Jones (a role by Jason Hughes) is the Detective Sergeant aiding Tom Barnaby (played by John Nettles) in "Midsomer Murders".
George Toolan (portrayed by John Lyons) is the Detective Sergeant to Inspector Jack Frost (played by David Jason) in the series "A Touch of Frost".
Thomas Lynley (a role by Nathaniel Parker) is the protagonist in "The Inspector Lynley Mysteries". His detective sergeant is Barbara Havers (played by Sharon Small).
3. The German TV series "Derrick" was named after a Chief Inspector within the Munich police department. Who played the role of Oberinspektor Stephan Derrick?

Answer: Horst Tappert

"Derrick" started in 1974 and ran until 1998. In all 281 episodes, Horst Tappert (1923-2008) played the title role, and Fritz Wepper (born 1941) played his assistant Harry Klein. Almost the entire series can be found on DVD.
Derrick relied on psychological methods to solve murder cases. Some episodes were directed as traditional "whodunits", while others revealed the identity of the murderer from the first scene. One would then only witness the various interviews leading up to the final arrest.
Horst Tappert started his career in a number of TV movies in the late fifties. He starred as hotel detective in the 1961 TV series "Zu Viele Köche" and as a post office robber in "Die Gentlemen bitten zur Kasse" in 1966. For those of you who don't speak German, I'll translate these titles: "Too Many Cooks" in 1961 and "Gentlemen Ask for the Cash" in 1966.
Michael Ande (born 1944) was one of the leading actors in the German police series "Der Alte". There is no official English translation for this title, but one could say "The Old One".
Klaus Behrendt (born 1960) starred as Hauptkommissar Max Ballauf in the TV series "Tatort". Once again, there is no official translation for this title. You might understand this title as "Crime Scene".
4. The Belgian detective series set in Bruges starring Herbert Flack as commissioner Pieter Van In and Francesca Van Thielen as Judge Hannelore Martens, was named after the author of the books on which the TV series is based. So what is its title?

Answer: Aspe

"Aspe" debuted in 2004, when Pieter Aspe had published about a dozen novels. The first season were screen adaptations of the novels. Starting from the second season, the screenplays were no longer linked to the novels. Several seasons are available on DVD.
Pieter Aspe (born Aspeslagh) started writing detective novels in 1995. The main characters are Detective Commissioner Pieter Van In, a bon vivant who consumes too much Duvel (a strong Belgian ale), and his wife Judge Hannelore Martens. Together they solve the most peculiar crimes in and around Bruges.
Luc Deflo debuted in 1999 as a detective author. His main characters in the first seven novels are detectives Bosmans and Deleu, and their territory is the small town of Mechlin.
Stan Lauryssens started writing about Antwerp policemen in 2002.
Jef Geeraerts debuted in 1962 with memoirs of a life in Congo. In most of his crime novels the officers Vincke and Verstuyft solve murder mysteries in and around Antwerp.
5. 1991 saw the start of a French TV series based upon the works of the Belgian author Georges Simenon. What was the family name of the title character?

Answer: Maigret

Simenon (1903-1989) became famous throughout the whole French speaking world with his books on commissioner Jules Maigret, a pipe smoking gentleman working for the Parisian police. The eponymous TV series ran from 1991 until 2005, and is available on DVD.
The title character is portrayed by Bruno Cremer (1929-2010), who starred in all 54 episodes. The other actors played in nine episodes at the most.
Lescaut refers to the TV series "Julie Lescaut", in which Veronique Genest portrays a police inspector after whom the series was named. The series started in 1992 and runs for over twenty seasons, although at a rate of maximum five episodes a year.
Police captain Laure Berthaud is the main character in the TV series "Engrenages". A first season ran in 2005, a second season in 2008 and a third in 2010. A fourth season was made in 2012.
"Les Cordier, juge et flic" is another French TV series about a police commissioner who solves serious crimes with the aid of his son (a judge) and his daughter (a journalist). It ran from 1992 until 2005.
6. Let's try and find the title of a Dutch TV series having debuted in 1995. Piet Römer stars as inspector Jurriaan De Cock ("with C-O-C-K", he spells out to everyone he meets) and Victor Reinier plays his sidekick, detective Dick Vledder. What is the title of the series, named after the author of the books upon which the series is based?

Answer: Baantjer

Albert Cornelis (Appie) Baantjer (1923-2010) was a police officer in Amsterdam, and he started writing detective novels in 1959. He invented the character Jurriaan De Cock in 1963 and wrote over seventy novels starring this inspector.
De Cock is a shabby looking inspector who has good contacts with some informers in the Amsterdam crime scene. He and his team solve a murder per episode.
The TV series "Baantjer" ran from 1995 until 2006 and is available on DVD.
"Grijpstra & De Gier" is the full title of another Dutch TV police series, named after the two energetic protagonists. It ran from 2004 until 2007.
Floris Wolfs is the name of one of the protagonists in "Flikken Maastricht". This character (another role by Victor Reinier) is an inspector from the Amsterdam police department, who'll have to fit in with a team in a provincial city. The series debuted in 2007.
7. Italian police TV series would probably have to deal with the Mafia. Which of the following TV series shows us the never ending struggle between the Italian police and the Mafia?

Answer: La Piovra

"La Piovra" started in 1984 and ran until 1999, in ten seasons. Main characters are inspector Corrado Cattani (role by Michele Placido) and his successors Davide Licata (played by Vittorio Mezzogiorni) and Silvia Conti (portrayed by Patricia Millardet). These people try to maintain law and order in Sicily, where the Mafia groups legal and illegal activities. Cattani is murdered by the Mafia in the fourth season.
"Il Commissario Montalbani" is also set in Sicily, but focuses on classical crime scenes (not the struggle with the Mafia).
"Donna Leon" is a series based upon the books written by Donna Leon. It deals with commissario Guido Brunetti solving crimes in Venice.
"Il Commissario Rex" is a TV series made by German, Austrian and Italian producers. The title character is quite a different police commissioner: he is a German shepherd.
8. Which of the following TV series is based upon books by Henning Mankell?

Answer: Wallander

Henning Mankell has published a series of detective novels starring inspector Kurt Wallander and later his daughter Linda, who also joins the police in Ystad (near Malmö).
The TV series started in 2005 starring Krister Henriksson. A spin-off was made in 2008 for the English speaking markets, with Kenneth Branagh in the title role. Both TV series are available on DVD.
Inspector Martin Beck is the protagonist in the books by Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö, and gave his name to another Swedish TV series.
"Forbrydelsen" is another Scandinavian TV detective series: a collaboration between Danish and Swedish television companies. Main character is inspector Sarah Lund, a Danish police inspector who is offered a job with the Swedish police.
"Broen" is once again a co-production by Danish and Swedish television companies. The series starts when someone discovers a corpse in the middle of the Oresund Bridge, just at the frontier between the two countries.
