The judge agreed to let John Ross stay in Sue Ellen's care because she was the mother and was no longer drinking at that time. J.R. tried all kinds of schemes to get John Ross back to Southfork, including trying to get Miss Ellie to kidnap him.

John Ross had become withdrawn after he was caught in a fire at Southfork, so his parents sent him to camp for therapy. Peter helped John Ross out of his shell, but also became smitten with Sue Ellen. John Ross became upset once again after J.R. framed Peter on drug charges and sent him away to New York.

He had told Christopher previously that he wanted to move to London and be with his mother because he could not handle being ignored by J.R. Bobby had promised Miss Ellie that he would never drill on Southfork, even if there was oil. John Ross and Elena managed to discover oil on the property, but Bobby was adamant about not drilling. To make tensions worse, J.R. sided with his son against Bobby.

Bobby had contemplated selling Southfork for some time. J.R. was upset that Miss Ellie did not leave him any part of the ranch and he and John Ross enlisted the help of Marta del Sol to buy the ranch from Bobby. However, the woman was not the real Marta del Sol but rather a Veronica Martinez.

Later on, Marta stole Elena Ramos' phone and told John Ross she had kidnapped Elena. When John Ross visited Marta, she revealed to him that she wanted to leave Dallas. The two fought and John Ross left, only to find Marta had been tossed from the balcony and landed on John Ross' car. He was arrested but was released when Sue Ellen convinced the coroner to say Marta willingly committed suicide.

John Ross and Christopher had started their company with the help of Elena, who was given some shares. Pamela had also received shares from her divorce settlement from Christopher. John Ross tried to start a relationship with Pamela in order to get her shares, but she would not give them up. However, Elena had been loaned money from Sue Ellen who called in the loan early after Elena's brother was arrested (after John Ross framed him for drug smuggling), violating a clause their agreement. Since Elena could not pay, Sue Ellen took her shares and promised to vote with John Ross.

J.R. told John Ross that he was proud of what he had done to get the company in his hands and that J.R. had a masterpiece, but was vague about it.

J.R. owned half of the mineral rights to Southfork, of which half was left to John Ross and the other half to Sue Ellen. J.R.'s will also contained a note from Miss Ellie. Miss Ellie had left Bobby Southfork when she died because she did not believe J.R. was responsible enough. (This is actually a continuity error between the original show and the revival as Miss Ellie had deeded Southfork to Bobby while she was still alive.) In the note, Miss Ellie explained that while she denied J.R. Southfork, she still intended John Ross to have half of it, with the other half still belonging to Bobby.

As the revival series began, Christopher was engaged to Pamela, who was using the alias Rebecca Sutter. She was actually the daughter of Cliff Barnes and Afton Cooper, and was using Christopher to get to the Ewings. He discovered her ruse and tried to get an annulment but had to settle for a divorce instead.

Later in the next season, John Ross married Pamela so he could gain control of her third of Barnes Global (Pamela was fully aware of this) and with the third Christopher received from his mother, gain control of Barnes Global. Just like his father did, John Ross cheated on her with Emma Ryland.
