Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Barnabas Collins became the starring vampire in "Dark Shadows". How did he become a vampire?

Answer: His former lover sent a vampire bat to bite him

This show is considered the forerunner of many gothic plots on daytime soap operas to follow. It was the brain-child of Dan Curtis, who became an important producer and director of many TV successes, including "Winds of War", and other excellent productions.
2. A soon-to-be "Charlie's Angel" got her start on this show. Kate Jackson played "lilac smelling" Daphne. When she first appeared on the show, who did she and her cohort, Gerard, want to die?

Answer: David and Hallie

Another "Angel", Jaclyn Smith, was married to "Dark Shadows" star Roger Davis. She was tested for the replacement of the original Victoria Winters, but although Dan Curtis thought she was very beautiful, he didn't like her screen test. She didn't get the role.
Later, Kate Jackson was cast in a different role. She played a mute ghost named Daphne who always left the scent of lilacs when she had made a visitation. Later episodes took place in the time she lived, 1840.
3. Another "Dark Shadows" star who continued on in show business after the show ended, was on the very first show. She played a sassy waitress, Maggie, in a hotel coffee-shop. Later, Maggie became a governess. Katherine Leigh Scott played other roles as time went on, including Lady Hampshire, and the tragic Josette. Which of her characters became an early kidnapping victim of Barnabas?

Answer: Maggie

Katherine Leigh Scott has helped keep "Dark Shadows" alive. She has written and published, by her publishing company Pomegranite Press, many books about "Dark Shadows", and other Dan Curtis productions.
4. A linch pin of "Dark Shadows", was a famous and beautiful movie star of the '30s and '40s. She played the matriarch of the Collins family through many time line stories. Elizabeth Collins Stoddard was played by Joan Bennett. In one of the first story lines, she had a terrible secret, which caused her never to leave her house. What was it?

Answer: She thought she had killed her husband and buried him in the basement

Joan Bennett was from a famous acting family, and in my opinion, was one of the most beautiful movie stars of the '40s. She was in such movies as "Woman in the Window", and an early version of "Little Women". At a DS Fest, I saw her daughter and a best friend, June Lockhart, extolling her wonderful life. Also, the author of a book, "The Bennetts", about the whole Bennett line of actors, was in attendance.
5. In one story line, there was the most horrible thing ever! A head, kept in a box with glass sides so you could see him. This head had no body, but was alive. What was this horrible head's name?

Answer: Judah Zachery

This is the character I most hated in "Dark Shadows"! The most evil! "Son of the Devil" he was called. No redeeming qualities, had he. The portrayer of the head was in a '40's movie series, but perhaps I'll save that for another quiz.
6. Louis Edmonds played Roger Collins. Roger was Elizabeth Collins' brother, and he too, had a terrible secret. What was the secret?

Answer: He had killed a man with his car

Louis Edmonds was from Baton Rouge, near New Orleans, a product of the Old South. His accent was not southern, however. He studied diction and created his own upper class accent. He served in World War II, then moved to New York City to land acting roles. He met with great success both on Broadway and on TV. He also played Langley on "All My Children" for many years.
7. An interesting character came to Collinwood, and was invited to stay there on the ploy that she was writing a family history. In reality, she was a doctor who was investigating unnatural happenings in the area. What was this character's name?

Answer: Dr. Julia Hoffman

Dr. Hoffman was one of the most important characters in "Dark Shadows", closely associated with Barnabas Collins. She was played by Grayson Hall, whose real-life husband was an imaginative writer on the series, Sam Hall.
8. In one story line, the misguided Reverend Trask met an unusual end. How did he die?

Answer: He was walled up alive, by Barnabas Collins

Reverend Trask was portrayed by Jerry Lacy, who had a remarkable resemblance to
Humphrey Bogart. He landed the role of Bogey in "Play It Again, Sam" a Woody Allen play. He repeated the role in the movie version, and played the character on several TV commercials.
9. The character of Ben Stokes was played by Thayer David. Ben was an illiterate servant of the Collins family. Who taught him to read and write?

Answer: Barnabas Collins

Thayer was on radio, then stage, and was influenced by Orson Welles. He joined "Dark Shadows" in its 38th episode and stayed until the very last. He played many roles, usually a "Stokes" but also Sandor Rakosi and others. He can also be seen in movies, such as "Journey to the Center of the Earth" with James Mason.
10. Quentin Collins was played by the handsome David Selby. Quentin loved to drink, and then throw his glass at the wall. What was his favorite drink?

Answer: Brandy

David Selby went on to great success on TV, movies, on stage and as an author - mostly books of poetry. Other of his TV shows include "Flamingo Road" and "Falcon Crest".
