Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Dark Shadows" originally started in 1966. One of the stars was on for the whole run, 1966-1971, and she was on the first and the last episodes. She was a major glamour girl in the 1940s from an acting family. Who was she?

Answer: Joan Bennett

Joan Bennett started in silent films in the 1920s as a young girl. She appeared in over seventy Hollywood films such as "Little Women" (1933) and "Father of the Bride" (1950). Her father Richard Bennett was a star, as was her sister, Constance. Joan played the matriarch (Judith Collins) of the Collins family.
2. The vampire, Barnabas Collins, was introduced in the first few episodes of the show.

Answer: false

The show was an ordinary Gothic drama until 1967 when Willy Loomis (John Karlen) found and released Barnabas Collins (Jonathan Frid) from his almost 200-year-old coffin. Then the fun really began!
3. Dramatic series always seem to have a place for characters to meet. In the case of "Dark Shadows", where was that place?

Answer: The Blue Whale

Collinsport was the fishing and cannery town setting for the series.
Thus, most businesses had a nautical theme. Much of "Dark Shadows'" background was shot in Newport, RI, and there are real places where exteriors were shot for the Blue Whale.
4. The ultra-handsome Quentin Collins was introduced to the show in a most unusual way. Which of these was involved?

Answer: A ghost speaking on a telephone

The children of the house (Collinwood) found an old-fashioned phone and began to play with it. Their conversations with the ghost led to trouble.
5. Barnabas was a pretty nice vampire and found a way to travel to 1795 to find out about himself. When he arrived it was in the time before he was a vampire. He had to go through it again. Who made him a vampire?

Answer: The Witch, Angelique

The jealous Angelique (Lara Parker) loved Barnabas, but he loved another; he was to marry Josette, but through magic Angelique ruined that. Barnabas still refused to marry Angelique, so in a fit of jealousy and rage, she sent a big bat to bite him.
He became the loathsome creature.
6. After Barnabas' return from the past, and cured of vampirism by his friend Dr. Julia Hoffman (Grayson Hall), he eventually had to travel to 1897 for the child, David (David Henesy), became very ill. He wanted to find out answers for both David and Quentin. What did he find out about the latter?

Answer: He was a werewolf

Quentin was cursed by a gypsy to be a werewolf! Through many episodes, a painter
was found, Charles Delaware Tate (Roger Davis) who painted a portrait of Quentin, and every time the full moon rose, the portrait would take on the characteristics of the werewolf, not Quentin. (Shades of Dorian Gray.)
7. When Barnabas returned to the present, Quentin's ghost was gone because this time he hadn't died in the past (because of the painting). Quentin was found wandering with no memory except for his love in 1897, Amanda Harris (Donna McKechnie). How did this love end?

Answer: Courtesy of Mr. Best

Mr Best was Death. He was to have her, but made a deal that if she and Quentin could cross a treacherous ground around a pit, she could remain with Quentin.
Of course it was dark, with rough ground and spiders, but if you ever have to do this, remember not to wear high heels! You can guess the rest.
8. One time, Barnabas traveled to 1840 to tend to business. Quentin had built a stairway upon which the characters could travel through time. Collinwood had been taken over by a minion of the evilest person who ever lived, Judah Zachery. What was it about Judah that was so horrible and scarey?

Answer: His disembodied head

A disembodied head! Alive! ugh.
This is the one I hated the most! He was kept and carried around in a glass box. His eyes would open and glare at you. I couldn't even look at him.
9. After Barnabas and Julia had traveled to 1840 on Quentin's staircase, they called upon Angelique (who had loved Barnabas through all timelines) to help rid Collinwood of Judah Zachery. She was a witch, so she was able to destroy him. Barnabas realized that he loved her, but she had cursed him long ago so that whomever he loved would die. Did Angelique die?

Answer: Yes

Because Barnabas loved her, she died when Lamar Trask shot her; Barnabas was too late to tell her he loved her.
(The Trask family had been enemies of Barnabas all through the different timelines, always played by Jerry Lacy).
10. The last episode of Joan Bennett as Elizabeth Collins ends with the lovely Elizabeth (Joan Bennett) putting on some black gloves to go with her glamourous outfit for a gathering in town. Would she have done this in the first episode?

Answer: no

When the series began, she hadn't been out of the house for 18 years as she was guarding a secret. But the series knew it was ending and all the loose ends were taken care of. To quote the end: "At last the ghosts and vampires at Collinwood have been laid to rest".
