Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the first leg of the race in Peru, teams needed to choose between 'Rope a Llama' and which of these?

Answer: 'Rope a Basket'

In Leg 1, teams headed towards the high-altitude city of Cuzco, Peru and then onwards to Huambutio where their Detour task was found on the far side of a large gorge (which they needed to zipline across). The Detour was a choice between 'Rope a Llama' and 'Rope a Basket'.

In 'Rope a Llama', teams needed to lead two llamas to a pen near their herding site. Once teams dealt with their animals, stubborn or not, they would receive their next clue. In 'Rope a Basket', teams dressed up in a poncho and used a rope to hold a basket to their backs. Once the baskets were transported two-thirds of a mile to the town of Huambutio, they would receive their clue. Susan and Patrick, Meredith and Gretchen, Uchenna and Joyce, and Ryan and Chuck roped llamas while the rest of the teams roped baskets.

After the Detour, teams had to find the town's police station and take a delivery truck to the town of Pisac.
2. In Leg 2, teams made their way to Chile for a Detour. In the 'Schlep' Detour tasks, what did teams need to transport?

Answer: Books

In Leg 2, teams found the Detour clue at Cerro San Cristóbal in Santiago, Chile, the country's capital city. Their first choice was 'Shop', in which team members needed to use their own money to purchase items on a shopping list for a Chilean chef in a nearby restaurant. Once teams returned the items to the chef, they would receive their clue. Uchenna and Joyce, Meredith and Gretchen, Lynn and Alex, Susan and Patrick, and Megan and Heidi all finished this task.

In 'Schlep', teams needed to receive a cart and transport one hundred eighty books to the Library of Congress eight blocks away.

After doing this, teams received the clue leading them to the second Pit Stop, Neptune Fountain in Cerro Santa Lucía.
3. In Leg 4 (in Argentina) teams needed to choose between 'Shipwreck' and 'Island' for the Detour. How many teams chose 'Shipwreck'?

Answer: Two

In Tigre, Argentina (on the Atlantic Coast), teams found the Detour task for this leg of the race. In 'Shipwreck', Rob and Amber and Brian and Greg needed to use a thirty-year-old picture as reference to search a large expanse for a shipwrecked vessel. All of the remaining teams decided to partake in 'Island' instead and used a map to find their clue on an island four miles away in the San Antonio River.

After the Detour, teams headed to the fourth Pit Stop where Susan and Patrick were eliminated (having trailed the entire leg).
4. Which team suffered an injury in the 'Tunnels' Detour task of Leg 5 (in South Africa)?

Answer: Meredith and Gretchen

Arriving in Johannesburg, South Africa, teams were given their Detour task, a choice between 'Tribes' and 'Tunnels'. In 'Tribes', teams headed to Lesedi Cultural Village to deliver five different objects to five different local tribesmen. When players received the five different necklaces from each respective tribesman, they would receive their next clue. Ron and Amber and Lynn and Alex completed this task.

In 'Tunnels', teams needed to rappel 45ft. into a cave to search a labyrinth of narrow tunnels for their next clue. Brian and Greg, Ron and Kelly, Uchenna and Joyce, and Meredith and Gretchen completed this task though Gretchen was injured while crawling through.

She and Meredith arrived at the Pit Stop in last, but were spared from elimination.

After the Detour, teams traveled to the city of Soweto.
5. In Leg 6, teams needed to choose between 'Food' and 'Water' in Botswana. In 'Water', what did teams fill with water?

Answer: Ostrich eggs

Upon arriving at a cattle post in Xau Xarra, Botswana, teams chose between 'Food' and 'Water'. In 'Food', teams used an item to pound corn into small fragments. Once teams filled a basket with this corn mash to a specific line, they would receive their next clue. Ron and Kelly, Uchenna and Joyce, Lynn and Alex, Meredith and Gretchen, and Ray and Deana finished this Detour task.

In 'Water', teams needed to fill twelve ostrich eggs with water. The catch? They needed to use straws made of thin reeds to suck the water from an underground spring. Rob and Amber and Brian and Greg completed this task.

After the Detour, teams needed to drive themselves to the Pit Stop on the Makgadikgadi Pans.
6. In Leg 7, teams proceeded through Botswana. Did all teams choose to complete the 'Milk It' Detour task?

Answer: No

While five teams decided to complete 'Milk It', Uchenna and Joyce completed the 'Carry It' Detour task. Upon arriving in Sankuyo Village, teams found the Detour at the town's water tower. In 'Milk It', teams needed to milk goats to fill a cup to a specific line.

In 'Carry It', on the other hand, teams needed to use their heads to carry three different items approximately 75 yd. to receive their clue. After the Detour, teams continued driving through the Botswanan savannah to Khwai where they found their Road Block task.
7. Leg 8 was a two-part leg in India. In the first Detour, all participating teams finished which task?

Answer: Liquid

In the first half of Leg 8, teams made their way to the city of Lucknow, India to find their Detour clue, a choice between 'Liquid' and 'Solid'. Had teams chosen the latter, they would've needed to travel to a coal depot, crush the coal into manageable sizes, and transport 175lb. using bicycles with flatbeds to a merchant shop.

In 'Liquid', all five participating teams decided to take a tea cart to a local office building, search the structure for five people on their given list, and receive their business cards in exchange for a cup of tea.

After this, teams headed to what they thought was the Pit Stop. In the second half of the leg in Jodhpur, India, teams completed one of either 'Dunk' or 'Trunk'.
8. In Leg 9 in Turkey, teams needed to do what while performing the 'Kilos' task?

Answer: Weigh people on a scale

In Leg 9, teams traveled to Istanbul, Turkey. Finding Galata Kulesi, teams located the Detour clue, a choice between 'Columns' and 'Kilos'. In 'Columns', completed by Ron and Kelly, teams needed to travel to Binbirdirek Cistern. Using maps, coordinates, and numbers found on different columns, teams needed to open a padlocked case with a combination to receive their clue.

In 'Kilos', teams needed to go to Yeni Mosque and, using a scale, weigh people (marking their totals) until they reached a weight of 2,500 kilos. Once confirmed, Rob and Amber, Meredith and Gretchen, and Uchenna and Joyce would receive their next clue.
9. In Leg 11, teams completed Detour tasks in Jamaica. Did all remaining teams choose the 'Raft It' task instead of 'Build It'?

Answer: No

In Leg 11, the remaining three teams traveled to Jamaica to complete their tasks. Upon arriving at Grant's Level High in Port Antonio, teams needed to choose either 'Raft It' or 'Build It'. In 'Raft It', teams boarded rafts and used bamboo sticks to head along an eight mile course down the Rio Grande.

At the end they would collect their clue. In 'Build It', teams built bamboo rafts instead. Once approved, teams would cross the river to receive their clues by climbing up a steep hill. Rob and Amber, Ron and Kelly, and Uchenna and Joyce all completed 'Build It'.
10. In what country did teams complete their final Detour task of the race in Leg 12?

Answer: Jamaica

While teams did fly back to the United States in Leg 12, the final leg, they completed the last remaining Detour task of the race in Montego Bay, Jamaica. For this, teams needed to choose between 'Pony Up' and 'Tee Up'. In 'Pony Up', teams rode horses into the sea (in a sport literally referred to as 'horseback swimming') and, holding their tails, take a buoyed course back to shore.

In 'Tee Up', teams dressed up in golfing clothes and went to the driving range to shoot golf balls into a marked area 140yd. away. All three teams completed 'Tee It Up'.

After the Detour, teams drove to the airport and flew to Puerto Rico for more tasks.
