Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Near the beginning of "Castrovalva", what does the newly-regenerated Doctor do with his scarf?

Answer: He unravels it.

As he walks through the TARDIS corridors, he unravels his scarf to keep track of where he's been. It's not the original scarf worn by Tom Baker in his early seasons, but a burgundy-patterned one introduced in the previous season. In Baker's last story, he uses his scarf to trip the Master.

The Doctor is quite absent-minded in his post-regeneration state--he lapses into his previous selves, rides an electric wheelchair in circles, and has difficulty counting to three.
2. Which character in "Castrovalva" turns out to be the Master?

Answer: The Portreeve

The Portreeve, like the Master, is played by Anthony Ainley. To hide this plot twist, the Portreeve is credited as "Neil Toynay", an anagram of "Tony Ainley", in the credits for part three.
3. In "Four to Doomsday", what do the clones do constantly?

Answer: Dance

The humans they were cloned from were taken from various time periods on Earth. They spend a lot of time dancing, so much so that the Doctor eventually uses the distractions in his plan against Monarch.

According to the DVD commentary, the scene where the Doctor spacewalks was filmed with Davison balancing on his stomach on an office chair being pulled across the studio on a string.
4. Among the Kinda, what is a sign of wisdom?

Answer: Speech

The Kinda mostly communicate telepathically; only Panna and her apprentice Karuna can speak aloud. Karuna mentions in part three that sickness can also cause one to speak.
5. What happens when Hindle opens the Box of Jhana?

Answer: His mind is brought back into balance.

The Doctor guesses that the box contains sound waves which heal the mind but are of a frequency that humans can't hear. When he opens the Box in part three, he and Todd have visions of the Kinda. At the end of the serial, he says that Hindle was "driven out of his mind--just what he needed", and so Hindle regains his sanity.
6. We meet the highwayman Richard Mace in "The Visitation". Plague has forced him out of his previous occupation as a what?

Answer: Thespian

Mace has some over-the-top mannerisms, which suit his vocation as an actor. Plague has closed the theatres, so he has to make a living via robbery. He also doesn't seem to have a problem with drinking the wine in a house that the Doctor breaks into.
7. In "The Visitation", we find out that the Doctor is responsible for what?

Answer: Starting the Great Fire of London.

The TARDIS crew confront the Terileptils in the bakery on Pudding Lane. During the fight, the Doctor drops the flaming torch he was carrying. He then uses the ensuing fire to kill the rats which had been infected with a super plague; the Terileptils had hoped to kill humanity with this disease.
8. Complete the Doctor's line from "Black Orchid": "Why do I always let my _____ get the better of me?"

Answer: Curiosity

Then again, if he didn't, we wouldn't have much of a show, as his curiosity leads him into many adventures. He says this line after getting stuck in a secret passageway.

The dance costumes that Nyssa and Tegan wear in this story can be seen in many subsequent serials, such as "Arc of Infinity", "Snakedance", and "Enlightenment".
9. In "Earthshock", Tegan wonders what stage her ancestors were at when the dinosaurs went extinct. What does the Doctor say they were?

Answer: Primitive

"Primitive, Tegan. Very primitive." He says it with a smile and an insulting tone. The Fifth Doctor sure can be snarky sometimes.

At one point in part three, a crew member with a clipboard can be seen in the background shadows. This error wasn't caught until the episode was broadcast. Oops.
10. What happens to Adric's star in "Earthshock"?

Answer: The Doctor destroys it to defeat a Cyberman.

It's made of gold, which is anathema to Cybermen. After incapacitating a Cyberman by rubbing the gold against its chest plate, the Doctor shoots it. In the next serial, Nyssa and Tegan seem to meet Adric again, but know that he must be an illusion because he's wearing his star, which they saw the Doctor destroy.
11. What does the Doctor say about the Concorde in "Time-Flight"?

Answer: "This thing is smaller on the inside than it is on the outside."

An inversion of the bigger-on-the-inside TARDIS. The TARDIS has been loaded on its side into the Concorde to make the plane time travel. At one point, the Doctor needs to get into it. He opens the door, edges down the floor, and fiddles with something on the console, which instantly reorients the TARDIS's gravity so that the inside is right-side up. Nyssa remarks that it would have been useful to have known about this feature when they landed the TARDIS at an angle in "Castrovalva" and the interior was consequently slanted.
12. In which serial does the Doctor defeat an enemy by using mirrors?

Answer: Kinda

The Mara, a demon that comes from dreams, is an evil force that can't bear to look at itself. The Doctor and Karuna trick Aris, who is possessed by the Mara, into entering a circle of mirrors. The Mara leaves Aris and manifests as a giant snake before bursting into pink light. This is one of many examples of the Doctor using pure intelligence and trickery to defeat a foe.
13. When is the sonic screwdriver finally destroyed?

Answer: The Visitation

The producer, John Nathan-Turner, thought that the screwdriver was becoming too much of a magic wand or fix-all and got rid of it. A Terileptil shoots it so that the Doctor can't use it to escape. The next time we see the Doctor use one is in the 1996 TV movie.
14. The Fifth Doctor dresses for cricket, or rather, as an alien might imagine an Edwardian cricketer would dress. In which story does he get to play cricket?

Answer: Black Orchid

The Cranleighs think that the Doctor is there to play cricket, and since the real man never shows up, the Doctor takes his place on the team. He bowls someone out right in shot and helps his team win. His love of cricket also comes up in "Four to Doomsday" and "Time-Flight".
15. When does the Doctor start wearing his signature celery?

Answer: At the end of "Castrovalva".

He gets into his cricketing gear in part one, munches on some celery in part three, and sticks the stalk on at the end of part four. Oddly, he doesn't need to attach it with anything--he just sticks it to his lapel. The city and population of Castrovalva, as well as everything in it, are mental constructs created by the Master and Adric, meaning that the celery isn't real, but a mental facsimile.

This could explain why it isn't held on with anything and never falls off--maybe the Doctor can just will it to stay on.
