Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What "instrument" does the Seventh Doctor like to play?

Answer: Spoons

The Second Doctor has his recorder, and the Seventh plays his spoons. McCoy has a history of clowning and worked it into his character. Evidently he's played them too much, as Ace becomes annoyed by them in "The Greatest Show in the Galaxy".
2. Who are the main enemies in the serial "Silver Nemesis"?

Answer: Cybermen

This serial was meant to be the 25th anniversary celebration, as silver is considered a proper 25th anniversary gift. Other villains are Lady Peinforte and Neo-Nazis. The Doctor plays them all against each other to disrupt their various plots.

"Silver Nemesis" was originally intended to be broadcast after "The Greatest Show in the Galaxy". Evidence of this can be seen on Ace's jacket: she wears Flowerchild's spiral earring, which she shouldn't have until the next serial.
3. What two things does the Doctor use to fight the Gods of Ragnarok?

Answer: Sword and necklace

The Doctor distracts the Gods, who demand constant entertainment, with a magic show while waiting for Ace to pass him the medallion. When he has it, he uses it and the sword to deflect the Gods' blows, which cause the dimension they're in to crumble, explode, and vanish. Once again, McCoy brought his history of magic and clowning to the show.
4. Who do Morgaine and Mordred say the Doctor is?

Answer: Merlin

They come from another dimension, where the Doctor has already been. Or rather, he will be in the future. That's the nature of time travel: the event has happened for them, but not for him yet. They don't recognize him by his appearance but by his manner.
5. Morgaine finds out that Mordred didn't pay his bill at the bar. How does she repay the debt?

Answer: She restores the owner's sight.

Morgaine thinks Mordred's actions were dishonorable, so she makes things right by curing the woman's blindness. Morgaine shows her high sense of honor in another scene where she honors the war dead at a cemetery along with the Brigadier, after which she tells him that when they meet again, she will have to kill him.

Jean Marsh plays Morgaine. She also appears in the much earlier story "The Daleks' Master Plan" as one-time companion Sara Kingdom. Twenty-three seasons separate these performances.
6. Complete the quotation from "Ghost Light": Ace: "How does Light move so fast?" The Doctor: "He travels at the speed of _____."

Answer: Thought

Light came to Earth to catalog life, but runs into trouble because life keeps evolving faster than he can record it. He dissipates at the end of the serial. Ace had felt this presence earlier in her life, which is why she burned down the house the story takes place in. Once again, we see the weirdness of time travel: Ace already burned down the house, but she's traveled to a time when it still stands and finds out why she did it.

"The Speed of Dark" is a science fiction novel by Elizabeth Moon.
7. What relative does Ace meet as a baby in "The Curse of Fenric"?

Answer: Her mother

Ace always hated her mother, and now has to save her life. She forms a bond with her grandmother Kathleen and saves her and her mother Audrey from Haemovores.
8. In "Survival", the first sign that a person is about to become one of the Cheetah People is yellow eyes. Do the Doctor's eyes ever turn yellow?

Answer: Yes

When he fights with the Master, his eyes go yellow when he's about to bash the Master's head in with a rock. He then realizes that if he kills, he'll become a Cheetah Person, and stops himself. Interestingly, the Doctor also considers killing someone with a rock in his first serial, "An Unearthly Child", so the first and last stories of the Classic run of seasons (1963-1989) have this common bond.

The decision to have the Doctor's eyes turn yellow briefly was made very late, so McCoy did not have his own contacts and had to borrow someone else's. Unfortunately, they had sand in them.
9. The Master makes his first appearance in a Seventh Doctor story in which serial?

Answer: Survival

Anthony Ainley, who plays the Doctor from "The Keeper of Traken" in season 18 (in the Fourth Doctor's era) to "Survival" in the season 26, shows up one last time here. For the first time, Ainley was allowed to play the Master as low-key and subtle rather than over-the-top and maniacal. We next see the Master in the very next televised story, the 1996 TV movie "Doctor Who", where he's played by Eric Roberts.
10. The Seventh Doctor meets his end in the TV movie "Doctor Who". How does it happen?

Answer: Botched heart surgery

He's shot by gangsters, but the bullets don't kill him. Instead, surgeon Grace Holloway gets flustered when she encounters his two hearts, and the Doctor dies as a result and must regenerate. The other options are ways other Doctors have died. Three and Ten succumb to radiation poisoning in "Planet of the Spiders" and "The End of Time: Part 2". Eight dies in a ship crash in the short episode "The Night of the Doctor" but is revived long enough to drink a potion to regenerate.

In "Logopolis", Four meets his end by falling off a radio tower.
